Ch3 Versteckspiel (Hide and Seek)

The whispering at the Ravenclaw table centered around a small dark-haired first year. She seemed flushed and uncomfortable and kept looking nervously over to where Neville Longbottom was sitting. He seemed to be just as flushed and disquieted, lips pressed together as if afraid to blurt out some awful secret. And just as afraid to make eye contact with his housemates.

“Hey, Neville, looks like you’ve got yourself a little admirer,” snickered Seamus. “But you’d better watch out; I don’t think Professor Flitwick would be too happy if he has to fetch her from the astronomy tower.”

“Are first years even allowed to date?” asked Parvati, abruptly putting down her glass. “Somehow that just doesn’t seem right”.

“Oh please! Neville isn’t interested in a first year. Just because she might have a school girl crush on him doesn’t suddenly turn him into a pervert,” snapped Hermione. She let her eyes wander over to the attractive girl in question, who suddenly seemed to be taking a great interest in buttering her toast.

“Remember when Colin was a first year how smitten he was with Harry? Poor Harry couldn’t hardly breathe without him trying to suck in the same air.” Seamus laughed.

“Yeah, but he got over it. Well, eventually.” Ron reached for another helping of sausage. “So will she. I mean, she’s eleven. How long can a crush last at that age?”

“Do you know who she is, Neville? Maybe if you just talked to her……”

Neville stood up abruptly. “Stop it! Just shut up all of you!” he hissed so quietly and malevolently that it shocked them all into silence. He flushed a brilliant red under their collective stare and practically ran out of the hall.

“What was that all about?” asked Harry. He had been so preoccupied with his own thoughts during breakfast that he hadn’t taken in a word of the conversation. “I’ve never heard Neville so angry. What did you say?”

“You want to tell me now that you haven’t noticed Neville acting strangely? He just about bit our heads off over nothing. We weren’t even really teasing him or anything.” Ron looked guiltily over at Hermione. “Were we?”

“No” sighed Hermione “Whatever made him so angry has little or nothing to do with us or what we said to him, and everything to do with that girl. I think it’s about time we found out who she is:”

“Morgana Esty,” said Ginny as she plopped down in Neville’s now empty seat. “The only child of a very old Wizarding family. Their families go back ages.”

They all stopped talking and looked at Ginny.

“What?”

“How did you find that out?” Ron looked suspiciously at his sister.

“I have my sources. Better to ask around than provoke poor Neville.”

“Did you find out anything else?”

“No, but you should probably leave Neville alone about it. I mean if their families go back that far, maybe it ines hes his parents or something and you know how sensitive he is. He never talks about them.”

Ron, Harry and Hermione quickly looked at Ginny. In that moment they shared the others’ thoughts. They were the only ones who knew…..had seen.

“We need to get a move on if we’re gonna make it to Charms on time,” Ron said.

They quickly began gathering their books for class. Once free of the great hall and any audience, Hermione turned to her best friends. “Do you think it has to do with his parents? I mean, since we were at St. Mungo’s and saw them, maybe Neville would at least talk to us about it in private.”

“Maybe, but we really shouldn’t push it. I mean,” Harry continued when he saw Ron wanted to argue, “he knows we know. He could come to any one of us if he needed to talk. And anyway, it might have nothing to do with them.”

“Harry’s right, Ron. We just need to let Neville know we’re there for him when he needs us. Maybe he has to work it out for himself first.” She threw Harry an odd look. “And if he doesn’t, and the situation doesn’t improve, then we can corner him”.

Harry didn’t much care for that look.
