The following morning, James awoke first.  He lifted his head and smiled at the sleeping form of his lovely boyfriend.  Sirius looked simply beautiful despite the bruises covering his face.  His long locks were spread-out over the plush, white pillow.

James quietly propped himself up on one elbow and started to gently run his fingers through his lover's smooth hair.  Sirius turned slightly in his sleep, but didn't awake.  James leaned forward and pressed a tender kiss on Sirius' forehead.  He then returned to his former position and continued combing Sirius' long locks with his fingers.

While Sirius slept, James' mind wandered back to the moment that he and Sirius admitted their love for each other…

"How is Sirius doing?" James asked as soon as he walked into the infirmary.

"Mr. Potter, aren't you supposed to be in class right now?" Madam Pomfrey asked.

James shook his head.  "I finished my transfiguration assignment, and Professor McGonagall said I could visit Sirius.  How is he?  Is he awake right now?"

"He was awake earlier," the nurse replied.  "He ate a very small lunch and then went back to sleep.  I must say, he complained the entire time."

James grinned.  "I'm glad he ate at least.  Is he getting better then?  How much longer will he have to stay in here?"

"I'm not sure," Madam Pomfrey said as she walked toward her office.  "The muggle flu can last a week or longer sometimes.  We really have no way of curing it or making it disappear."

"I know," James mumbled.  "Can I see him?"

"He's asleep, Mr. Potter."

"May I at least sit by his bed?" James begged.

Madam Pomfrey sighed, "All right.  But don't disturb him!  I'll be in my office if you need anything."

James smiled and grabbed a chair.  He then pushed back the curtains surrounding his best friend's bed and quickly sat down.  After several minutes of staring at Sirius, James carefully grabbed one of Sirius' hands and gently started stroking it.  He figured his friend was in a deep sleep and wouldn't wake up for a while.

"Siri, I hope you get better soon.  I have no idea how you managed to get this stupid muggle illness, but that doesn't matter right now.  What's important is helping you feel better and getting you out of here.  You have no idea how boring my life is without you in it.  I love Remus and Peter, but they just aren't you.  Nobody can take your place, Siri."

James sighed and continued running his fingers along Sirius' hand.  He didn't really know why he was saying all of this-it wasn't like Sirius was listening.  However, James still felt the need to talk to his best friend.

"Do you realize you're almost always sleeping when I visit you?  I think Madam Pomfrey must be drugging you up right before I come in or something so that we can't talk.  She always looks unhappy when I walk into the room.  I asked if I could stay with you all day, but McGonagall went off for fifteen minutes about the importance of attending classes.  It's not like I even pay attention once I'm there, anyway.  She did say I can help you get caught up once you're all better."

James stopped talking for a moment and ran his free hand through his unruly hair.  This was getting ridiculous.  Sirius was sleeping peacefully-he could not hear James al! &l!  And yet, James wouldn't shut up.  What if Remus or Peter walked into the room?  They would probably ship James off to the mental institution.

"You know, Siri, if you ever find out that I've been coming here and talking to you every afternoon while you're asleep, you'd probably knock me on the head and say I've completely lost my mind.  It's just that I miss talking with you and spending time with you.  You're my best friend, and we're always together.  Like I said before, my life is totally boring without you.  You're really all I think about most of the time.  Well, you and quidditch, of course.  But, you're more important."

James bit his lip.  "You know, I've already said way too much, but since you are sleeping, and you can't hear me, I'm going to tell you something that I know I never can really say to you.  If that makes any sense at all, Siri.  It's just that I know I can't say this to you when you're awake.  You'd probably hate me or something.  So, maybe if I tell you now, it will help me feel better some.  Not really, but…gods, I'm rambling.  If you were awake, I know you'd be laughing at me.  But then again, I love your laugh, Siri."

James stopped talking for a moment trying to piece his thoughts together.  He really was quite insane for telling Sirius any of this…

"Look, Siri, what I'm trying to say is, I want to be more than just best friends.  For the longest time, I've loved you as a best friend, but I know I want something more.  Much more.  I'm completely and hopelessly in love with you, Sirius Black.  And I know I sound like a greeting card, but at least you're sleeping and can't hear me.  Anyway, if you could hear me, you'd be disgusted by now.  I just can't help it-I love you so much.  I love every single little thing about you.  I know we're young, but I also know I want to spend the rest of my life with you."

James paused and looked down at Sirius' hand.

"Thank Merlin you are sleeping, Siri.  I know I could never say any of that to you in reality.  I think it did help to say it now, though.  For some strange reason…"

James tenderly let go of his friend's hand and stood up.  "I guess I should let you sleep.  I'll come back here after dinner to visit you."

James started to walk away, but stopped when he heard a voice.

"Stay."

James turned around and found himself staring into the most gorgeous pale blue eyes in the world.

"Siri!  You're awake!" James exclaimed, returning to his seat.  "How do you feel?  Do you need anything?"

"I'm fine," Sirius replied weakly.  "I promise."

James raised an eyebrow.  "You don't sound fine."

"Hey, I'm awake, aren't I?"

"That doesn't prove anything," James said, laughing slightly.  "I am glad you're awake, though.  Madam Pomfrey said you ate lunch today."

Sirius grimaced.  "She made me.  Merlin, the woman gets on my nerves."

James nodded in agreement.

"So your life is boring without me, huh?" Sirius asked, grinning.

James started to reply, and then his eyes widened.  "You were awake?"

"I sure was," Sirius said, winking.

James paled and started to get up.

"Don't you dare go anywhere, James Potter," Sirius demanded.  "At least let me speak first."

James groaned and placed his head in his hands.

"Look at me," Sirius said as he put his hand on James' arm.  "Don't do that."

James mumbled something, but didn't move.

"All right, fine.  Stay that way then," Sirius said.  "Look James, I know you thought I was sleeping, and I'm sorry I didtelltell you I was awake.  Once you started talking, I wanted to listen to what you had to say.  You usually don't go on like that."

James moaned quietly and kept his face hidden in his hands.

"James, will you please lift your head?"

"Mr. Black, you should not be up and talking!  Did Mr. Potter wake you up?" Madam Pomfrey said as she rushed oto Sto Sirius' bedside.

James lifted his head and got up from his seat.

"Don't leave!" Sirius ordered.

"Mr. Black, you need to calm down," the nurse said in an agitated voice.  "This is no way to behave when you have been ill.  You're still extremely weak and-"

"James, I will never speak to you again if you leave this room!" Sirius exclaimed.

"Yelling is not going to benefit your health, Mr. Black.  If you continue in this manne wil will inform your head of house that you are not well enough to play quidditch for the rof tof the year."

"It's not like you were going to speak to me, anyway," James said sadly.  "After what you just heard!  Come on, Sirius.  We both know you don't want anything to do with me now."

"Mr. Potter, I insist that you leave right now.  I don't know what you did, but my patient was calmly sleeping until you cin."in."

"I'm leaving, Madam Pomfrey, and I assure you, I won't be bothering him again."

"James Potter, you fucking ignorant bastard!  If I didn't love you so damn much, I would probably kick you in the arse right now for your own stupidity!"

"Mr. Black, watch your language!  I can take house points away, you know!"

"Poppy, keep your voice down, I'm trying to recover, remember?" Sirius asked, raising an eyebrow.  "If you continue yelling, I'm never going to heal."

"Mr. Black, you will address me in the correct manner!  Is that clear?"

"Whatever you say, Poppy."

"What did you just say?" James asked, looking at Sirius.

"Fifty points from Gryffindor, Mr. Black.  I will be reporting you to Professor McGonagall, as well."

"In an extremely round-about way, I told you that I loved you, James.  I am in love with you."

"Mr. Black, did you hear what I just said?"

"My dear, I don't give a damn," Sirius said, grinning. *

"Are you just sa tha that?" James asked.

"No, I'm quoting it, actually.  From a muggle book called-"

"Sirius, you know what I'm asking."

"I'm not just saying it, James.  I've felt this way for ages.  Just ask Remus and Peter-they know all about it."

"They do?  Even Peter?"

Sirius nodded his head.  "I had to tell someone, and I figured I could never tell you.  Look, James I am in love with you more than you can possibly imagine.  You mean everything to me.  I just have never had the courage to tell you how I feel.  I figured you'd turn me away."

"As touching as all of this is, Mr. Black, you need to be-"

"Fuck it, Poppy!  I'm trying to have a conversation here, all right?  Take away as many house points as you want to.  Kick me off the quidditch team.  Just leave me the fuck alone right now, and don't you dare even think about taking James away from me.  I will never get be if if he walks out that door right now."

The nurse glared at Sirius and scurried out of the infirmary and towards Professor McGonagall's classroom.

James moved over to Sirius' bed again and just stared at his best friend.  "You really mean all of that?"

"Of course, I do," Sirius whispered.  "You are my world, James.  I love you so much.  I just never thought you would feel the same way about me."

James sat down on the edge of Sirius' bed and smiled.  "I can't believe this is happening, Siri."

"Neither can I," Sirius replied.  "Too bad I'm sick.  This is the perfect moment to share our first passionate kiss, isn't it?"

James rolled his eyes lovingly and placed his hands on Sirius' pale face.

"The fact that you're sick isn't going to stop me from kissing you."

"You could get sick," Sirius said quietly as he moved closer to James.

"I don't care.  Then we'd be here together."

"With Poppy?"  Sirius smirked.  "We could have a threesome with her.  What a terrifying thought that is!"

"You are completely insane, but I'm still madly in love with you," James murmured as he leaned forward and kissed Sirius passionately.

James finally drifted back to reality and grinned at his lover.  Their first kiss was amazing, but each one since then was just as passionate and perfect.  James knew he wanted to spend the rest of his life with Sirius, and he had an idea forming in his head regarding that particular thought.  As soon as Sirius awoke, James was going to put his plan into action.

"How long have you been staring at me?" Sirius asked sleepily.  He reached one hand up to rub his eyes and flinched when he hit a bruise.

James tenderly kissed Sirius' face several times and smiled.  "I don't know how long.  I love watching you.  You're beautiful, Siri."

Sirius snorted.  "I'm sure I look just fabulous right now, James."

"You always do," James whispered.  "Look, I need to go talk to my mum t sot something.  I'll be right back."

Sirius raised an eyebrow and watched his boyfriend climb out of the bed and hurry away…
