Chapter 2
*Hogwarts, 10th of June 1997*
//Dear Mr. Snape,
It is our unfortunate duty to inform you about the death of your grandparents, Damien and Elfrida Snape. They were among those who died in the explosion in front of Gringotts yesterday morning, 9.6.1997. Our deepest condolences.
The bodies of Mr. and Mrs. Snape can be fetched…//
The rest of the letter faded in front of Severus’ eyes. He couldn’t believe it. Grandmother and grandfather couldn’t be dead. He read the letter again. The contents remained the same. There had to be a misunderstanding…
But self-deception had never been part of Severus’ nature. He had to accept the truth. Aequus Rus would be empty when he went there next week. No one to hug him welcome. No one to ask about his potions projects. No one to tell him to marry…
As the last thought crossed his head he felt a slight twinge of guilt, but even stronger wave of relief. He had tried to keep his eyes open for possible brides, but there were no good ones for a 101% gay. Now he was free of that, at least. But the prize was very high, indeed.
Severus shook himself and ushered his emotions away. He would have time for them when the term would be over after w daw days. Now he would have to go to find the Headmaster to tell him he would be cancelling his classes today. And then he had to go to the ministry…
*Aequus Rus, 29th of June 1997*
The funeral had been a quiet occasion. The Snapes had not had very many friends, preferring to keep to themselves, but those few they had were good ones. Now it was over and only the lawyer remained. Severus sighed.
“This must be hard for you, Mr. Snape. I am truly sorry for you, I know you were close to your grandparents.“
Severus waved his hand.
“Yes, quite, but it has to be done anyway… We should probably get this last bit done, too.“
“Right. Let’s start. They had a common testament in case they died at the same time.
“This is the testament of Damien and Elfrida Snape, written under on 3rd of September 1990. All signatures are valid. I’ll read this.
//This is the last will of Da Sna Snape and his wife Elfrida Snape.
We leave all of our property, house, lands and movables as well as the money at our Gringotts vault to our grandson Severus Ethan Snape on two conditions:
1. He must marry.
2. He must produce an heir.
If he fails to fulfil these conditions within three years of our death he shall receive nothing and everything will be transferred to the state. No exceptions.//
*Aequus Rus, July 1997*
Two weeks had gone by after the funeral, and Severus was still in a deep shock. He couldn’t believe his grandparents had actually done that. He had known they were stubborn and insistent over the subject; it had caused strain on their relationship. Obviously they had thought it better to leave everything to the state sooner than later.
Severus felt hopeless. The lawyer had said the testament was valid. A bit strange but valid none the less. He had to fill the conditions or his beloved home would be gone. Aequus Rus had belonged to the Snapes for 700 years. The house itself had been rebuilt several times, the current one was from the middle of the 19th century, but the lands around the house had stayed in the family the whole time. It had remained their “Calm Area“ through the centuries, survived several wars and reformations. And now it looked like it would be gone after three years.
Severus had enough own money to be able to by his own little house if need be, but he had lived his whole life at Aequus Rus, it had always been his home, as well as the previous generations’ home, no matter where he was. His money wouldn’t be enough to buy the house and lands back from the state. He was depressed.
*Aequus Rus, August 1997*
After a month of moping around in apathy, Severus ran into some notes he had taken about a decade earlier. He almost put them aside again when it hit him: they were about male pregnancies. He had made them in 1988, if his ry dry didn’t fail him, after an exceptionally heated argument about getting an heir. He had waded through the Restricted Section at Hogwarts for any and all information on the subject. There hadn’t been much, and none of it encouraging, so he had dropped the subject then. Now he decided to go through them again.
Severus took the papers to his favorite chair in the summer sitting room and started to read. The information wasn’t any better this time around, but it made him think. What if… He knew he would never have sex with a woman, that was for sure, but what if he could have a child with an other male…? What if he could make it work, make male pregnancy possible? The solution wouldn’t be optimal - no solution would – but it would surpass the alternative by light years. Indeed, what if…?
He stood up abruptly and went to fetch the testament. No, there was no mention of the gender of his supposed partner. His grandparents had never had a problem with the fact that he was gay, just the fact that it meant he wouldn’t have children. And as there had never been a successmalemale pregnancy, any mention of gender would be unnecessary, anyway. Severus sank in deep thoughts.
Marriage wouldn’t be a problem as same sex marriages had been accepted in the wizarding world for over a thousand years, even though they were usually frowned upon, seen as a sort of slavery due to historical facts. Severus thought he could live with that. Producing the child would be the real challenge. There had been a few successful impregnations recorded through the centuriest not none of them had produced a child, each and every ending in a miscarriage in fourth month at the latest. It was also a great risk for the pregnant male, which most likely was the reason there were so few who actually tried it: all but one of them had died in the miscarriage. The one who had survived had miscarried on third week, earlier than the others, and become paralyzed from waist down.
After two days Severus had reached his decision. He would take one year to try and find a way for a successful male pregnancy. If, by the end of the year, he hadn’t found anything useful, he would re-evaluate the situation.
There was a new determination in Severus as he set to work on his research.
