Chapter Two: Friends

It was September the 1st and the Hogwarts staff was all running around trying to get everything ready. Remus, Hermione, and Flitwick were in charge of the Great Hall decorations. Dumbledore managed to find a temporary Potions Mistress to fill in until he could get someone to take to position officially. He had told them that he had someone in mind, but he refused to tell anyone who it was. The staff all sat in their seats at the staff table in the Great Hall while Hagrid went to Hogsmead Station to pick up the first years. Dumbledore sat (of course) in the middle, Remus on his right and Minerva on his left. Hermione sat next to Remus, and the seat next to her remained empty.

Soon the other students began to enter the Great Hall and take their seats. Some of the older students who recognized Hermione as their Head Girl three years previous waved to her and she smiled sweetly back. When the doors closed and Hermione thought that all the students were there except the first years, they opened again. A cheerful young woman stood in the doorway. She had short red hair that you couldn’t miss a mile away. The young redhead walked up to the staff table, nodded at Albus, then went around and took the seat next to Hermione.

“Ginny! What are you doing here?” Hermione exclaimed, giving Ginny a big hug.

“Albus – gosh it feels weird calling him that! – asked me to fill in the position as Potions Mistress, but as I have no experience with teaching I asked him if I could be an assistant for this year, then maybe next year I can take on the position fully. What are you doing here?”

“Did I seriously forget to tell Harry? I took over as History of Magic Professor.”

“But what about Binns?”

Hermione didn’t have a chance to explain because Minerva had just entered the Great Hall with the new first years in tow. Hermione and Ginny watched the sorting ceremony, both remembering the ones they had attended, all the way back to the ones in which they were sorted. Hermione remembered the little voice from the hat. It had seriously considered her for Ravenclaw, then Slytherin, then finally decided on Gryffindor. The new students were sorted and Dumbledore welcomed the school, then the food came and went.

“So where are your living quarters?” Hermione asked while setting down her glass.

“As much as I’d rather then be elsewhere, they’re in the dungeons. I would think they would consider moving the Potions class to a different floor now that Snape left.”

Hermione felt her stomach churn. Apparently Ginny thought Severus just left.

“He didn’t just leave you know.”

“Really? Rumor has it that he was slowing going crazy and had to be secretly shipped to St. Mungos.”

Hermione closed her eyes for a second before responding. “No, that’s not true. I’ll fill you in on everything later. It’s Friday, so we don’t have classes tomorrow. Maybe you could come to my quarters, or I could go to yours and help you get settled?”

“That’d be nice. So what have you been up to lately? I haven’t talked to you in ages and it’s been almost 3 weeks since Harry saw you last. You know he wasn’t mad that you forgot his birthday, just worried, right?”

“I know. I had a lot going on. I was planning my lessons for the year and I had some other stuff taking up a lot of my time that I’ll tell you about later.”

Ginny gave her a sideways look, wondering what could make her voice sound so upset.

“Hello Ginny. Are you excited to be teaching now?” Remus joined the conversation, which relieved Hermione.

Soon Albus stood up and gave out the yearly announcements, then announced the new teachers. When he announced Professor Hailey as the new Potions Mistress, whispering broke out among the students, the same questions roaming around each table: what happened to Professor Snape? Albus, however, did not elaborate on Severus’ absence, choosing instead to allow the students to speculate their own versions of explaining it. He then excused the students to their dorms and Hermione and Ginny made their way to the dungeons.

Hermione and Ginny quickly made Ginny’s living quarters look as she wanted them to. They then sat in front of the glowing fire drinking hot cocoa.

“I suppose you want to know what happened to Severus?” Hermione asked.

Ginny’s eyes widened and she looked at her friend. “Severus? Since when were you on a first name basis with him?”
Hermione smiled slightly.

“I guess I should start at the beginning. I must ask you not to interrupt me while I’m telling you everything, I don’t know if I’d be able to get through the whole thing if you did.”

“I promise.”

“Ok, also feel free to ask any question once I’ve finished. Ok, It started in the middle of July, the night Malfoy was found ‘dead.’ I was on my way up to visit everyone here when he grabbed me from behind…” Hermione went on to tell her story for the second time. “Then I went back to Severus’ rooms to find him in his bathroom. He was leaned up against the bathtub. He looked peaceful, but he was dead all the same. He had a cut on his hand and on the mirror ‘I loved you too’ was written in his blood. It was horrible to see and all I really remember was crying, then Remus coming in, then Albus, then reading a letter from Severus explaining why he killed himself.”

Hermione looked at Ginny to see that she was looking at Hermione with tears in her eyes.

“You know Gin, I really did, do, love him. We never got close romantically, but if it wasn’t for him I’d still be a slave to Malfoy.”

“Oh Hermione! Why didn’t you tell Harry or me? We could have been there for you!”

“But there was nothing you could have done. Listen, that chapter of my life has been closed. They’ve already had his funeral, Malfoy is in Azkaban, and I’m teaching now. I need to move on with my life.”

Hermione saw Ginny’s eyes sparkle. “And does moving on involve anyone in particular?”

Hermione frowned at Ginny.

“You know what, I don’t think I am really ready to move on romantically, not yet. But yes, it does involve some people. Like you, Harry, Remus, and all my friends.”

“Does Remus know yet?”

“Yes, he was actually the first one, besides Severus, to hear the whole story.”

“Oh. What do you say we go see him?”

“Ginny, it’s 11:30.”

“I know. We aren’t students anymore, remember?”

Ginny laughed when Hermione sent her a glare.

“Yes, I do remember, but I was merely thinking that he’s probably not up.”

“You’ve got a point. He’s probably tired. The full moon is in a few days.”

“He hasn’t told you?!?”

“Told me what?”

“I’ve changed my mind! We’re going to go visit him!”

With that Hermione stood up and pulled Ginny up. They left Ginny’s rooms and made their way to Remus’ living quarters. Hermione knocked on the portrait loudly. After a few minutes, Remus opened the portrait looking wide-awake.

“Hello girls! What are you doing here?”

“Can we come in?”

Remus eyed Hermione and Ginny in mock suspicion before opening to portrait to them. They went in past Remus and he closed the portrait behind them. He offered them a seat in front of the fire, which they accepted.

“So what brings you girls to my quarters?”

“Well, I mentioned that the full moon was in a few days and Hermione went off about you not telling me something. What was she talking about?”

“Ah, you didn’t tell her? Why not Hermione?”

“Well Remus, I rather thought you’d like the honor of telling.”

“Would you two stop talking about it and just tell me?!”

Remus and Hermione chuckled at this and Remus turned to her.

“Have you heard about that potion that is supposed to cure lycanthropy?”

Ginny’s eyes widened in understanding.

“Why didn’t you tell us sooner?”

“I wanted to make sure it worked. This full moon will be my first since the potions been completed. You know, I haven’t even felt any of the side effects I usually do, but I think I’ll go to the Shrieking Shack just in case.”

“I never did find out, Remus, who discovered the potion?”

Remus looked at Hermione uneasily.

“Severus,” he said just above a whisper.

Hermione felt a pang of – something – hit her heart. Ginny noticed the pained look on her friend’s face and felt her heart go out to the woman. She knew what it was like to love someone, but she didn’t know what Hermione was feeling in her loss.

Author\'s Notes: Well, chapter two is *finally* here! Sorry it took me so long to update. If you read this, put \"fluffy bunnies\" in your review... I think this will be the last sad chapter... I have a feeling this is going to turn into a fluffy smutlet... Oh posspossibilities! Hehe... anywho!

Thanks to everyone that has reviewed since my last post. I\'m glad you all are enjoying this...

Deb: Yep, you\'re right... this is definitely going to take on a life of it\'s own.... it\'s going to be fun to write as well...

Missy: Glad you\'re here for the ride...

SandraM: Oh yeah... forgot about the fact that I\'ve yet to tell Harry and Ron.... gotta remember that for later chapters...

Tatia: I\'m afriad this might turn into a fic with little plot... hehe....

Flick: I\'m glad you\'re going to stick around... I\'m not the biggest fan of RL/HG either... but I\'m just having fun with the different Hermione/? pairs...

Ahrimanne: To tell the truth, there probably won\'t be any more major focus on Severus or his death... it\'s difficult to justify why he died, which is why I made his death a dream in Save Me From My Pain.... so I\'m just not going to worry about it here... I am very glad you enjoyed last chapter... hope you still stick around...

I have no idea when my next chapter will be up... I have been kinda busy lately with school and all... so yeah... enjoy the chapter!
