Chapter 3 : To Share or Not to Share
************~*~************
Oct 5, 2003
Dear Ms. Fendley,
You may want to try an infusion of chamomile, valerian, grape seed, and rose hip. Steep equal parts of each in boiling water to cover for about 5 min, strain and press the remaining liquid gently from the flowers. Add a splash of whiskey and honey to taste. It will help you sleep. Sleep is the best thing for influenza.

Books about “the Boy Who Lived to Aggravate”, Merlin preserve us. What ever possessed the woman? If the boy would just stay out of things that don’t concern him and listen to the advice of those who have a bit more experience, he would be much better off and much safer. You are right; he is becoming more like his idiot father every year.

As for myself, I dearly hope that you have not had to experience the horrors that I have endured.

I look forward to speaking with you again but I fear I must go.

Severus

************~*~************

Severus quickly shut the book and shoved it into the top drawer of his desk. Rubbing his arm absently he changed quickly in to the hated robes and took up the even more reviled mask. The slight burn was becoming more painful by the moment.

‘Wonderful,’ Severus thought, ‘He’s pissed about something.’

Moving to the hearth in his workroom he took a pinch of floo powder and threw it in.

“Albus, I have to go.”

************~*~************

Lissa read his last entry and considered why it was so short. One of a few things had to have happened; someone at Hogwarts, class started or Voldemort called, interrupting him. She hoped the later was not the case. Crap! She was 5 minutes late and had not even eaten yet! Shit!! She ran to the clock and signed in, then ran to her post. Gods! Her chest hurt!

************~*~************

By the time Lissa got home she was shivering. There was no going to work now. She was too sick. She\'dve* ve* to the doctor now. ‘One last entry then,’ she thought. It was going to be a little messy because of her shivering.

Dear Prof Snape,

I will not be going to work tomorrow. I am too ill... my horrid handwriting is a direct result of my high fever. I think I will take your advice on sleeping. I am too ill to make the potion right now. Forgive me. No worries though. I hope it was not Voldemort\'s call that took you away from me so quickly. Goodnight my sweet. I pray for your safe return.
Love,

Lissa

Severus rested for a moment next to the stone gate that opened to the grounds of Hogwarts, and tried to control the tremors of pain the coursed through his body. The meetings were getting more and more brutal. Voldemort was unhappy, to put it mildly, with the progress thus far. Severus limped up to the castle and smiled softly at the welcoming lights twinkling like a beacon. Home.

Muttering the password to the large doors to the entrance hall. Wrenching one of the doors open Severus made his way to Albus’s office. Trying his best to use his normal ‘bat-from-hell’ gait but not pulling it off as nicely as he would have liked.

“Candy Apple.” Severus said wearily to the funny looking gargoyle that guarded the entrance to the headmaster’s office.

The gargoyle slid to the side and Severus made his way up the winding staircase. He opened the door with out knocking, slumped into an over stuffed chair and summoned a restorative potion from his quarters. Albus was watching him like a hawk and he mustn’t let Albus know the extent of his injuries or he will be receiving Poppy’s tender ministrations when all he dearly wanted to do was to crawl in to bed.

\"I shall take it that you had a difficult evening.\" Albus\'s said this lightly although his expression was grave.

\"Brilliant deduction,\" Severus sighed closing his eyes for a moment, \"It has been the worst yet and it seems that they will only get more difficult as time goes on.\"

\"What seems to be the problem, Severus?\"

\"Voldemort is unhappy with his death-eaters. He is not getting the results he desires. He has decided that the Ministry should have fallen by now, especially with Fudge in Lucius\'s pocket.\"

\"Had he held off from the prophecy... it might have. What is he expecting of you?\" Albus watched Severus closely and wondered if this was all that was bothering him.

\"He has given me a new mission. He wants me to create a new potion. A vapor of some kind that will stupefy or kill when breathed. Though he did intimate that he would rather something to incapacitate. I think he has something in mind for the fate of muggle-born witches.\"

Albus heaved a sigh of weariness and for a moment his many years shown clearly on his face and in his eyes were the many sorrows and traes hes he\'d endured.

\"How close are you to completing it Severus?\"

\"Voldemort gave me several vials of potions that others have developed. He wants me to take the best of these and create the vapor agent and delivery method. I am only in the beginning stages and I can probably delay a bit though he strongly suggested that I ask a student to assist me, namely Malfoy, the younger.\"

\"And things strongly suggested are akin to \'gentle orders\'. Yes? I know you hate doing this Severus and I don\'t like it any better but... do not push your luck with him. You are of no use the wizarding community dead and I would grieve for another losiendiend.\", Albus paused thinking of his next question. Contrary to most people\'s thoughts, he was not omniscient; he relied heavily on spies for his information such as the portraits. He knew through them that Severus had found an interesting book that had taken up much of his time during the past 4 days. He was curious as to what it could possibly be. He *must* be getting old! Turning into such a busybody was normally reserved for old women he\'d always heard... \"So, Severus, found anything interesting to read in the library lately?\"

Severus\' head snapped up meeting the twinkling eyes of the Headmaster. How could he know about the book? He had just gotten it. “Oh, just the usual, the latest potions research and such.\" Severus dissembled, hoping beyond hope that Albus would leave it at that.

\"Severus... you gathered an unusual book from poor Mr. Weasley and spend 4 days making a potion that you applied to it and then wrote in the book a few times. Not your normal habit with books from the restricted section. At least I don\'t believe so. Madam Pince has never mentioned anything of the sort. Something you\'d rather not discuss right now I take it?\"

\"It is not that. I was being a bit jealous, wanting to keep a new toy to my self for a while.” Severus sighed and relented, knowing that it would be easier to just back down now before Albus got rolling. “It was a journal. The person was writing to me. The potion I made allows me to write back. Now tel Alb Albus, who do you have spying in my private lab, hmmm?\"

Albus smiled, eyes twinkling merrily. \"A little spider told me. A journal? This isn\'t another situation like a few years back is it? Is this person living? Reassure me Severus. I don\'t want to lose you to a memory or some other dark enchantment.\" For all his humor, Albus was seriously worried. He hated using Severus as a spy but there was no alternative and he would be *damned* if he would allow someone to destroy Severus if he could prevent it.

\"I believe the woman is alive but not of our reality. She told me some very interesting things. I don\'t know how this journal got linked to hers or how it made it\'s way in to the library. I thought at first that it was a prank pulled by some students.\" Severus winced inwardly as he remembered his scathing remarks from his first reply.

\"And your first entry reflected this. Yes, I can see it did. How did she take it and what was so interesting if I may ask?\"

“Surprisingly, she took it quite well, as if she would have expected me to reply as I did. She seems to live a mundane life and does not seem too terribly happy though keeps in good spirits. The most interesting thing she told me was that there is a woman writing a series of books, five thus far, dealing with Mr. Potter and his time here. Though she does not seem too terribly impressed by our \'savior\'. She and I seem to get on quite well.\"

Albus smiled. \"Really? Based on your mutual dislike of Harry?” Albus’s lips twitched with suppressed laughter.

\"Please be careful Severus.” Albus held up a hand to stop any protests from his friend. \"I know you usually are being a Death-eater and all but I wonder if she knows all the details and what she would do if she knew. How does she take to the idea of magic and you being a wizard?\" Albus paused a moment. \"Another reality. Perhaps she can assist with things. Whose side is she on and would she be willing to help us?\"

“She seems to be sympathetic to me and if the books she spoke of are as detailed as I believe they might be, she knows about what I was and what I am. She seems to be unbothered by my usual attitude. She would probably be very interested in helping us in the her first entry she expressed a desire to be transported here even.\"

\"Hmmm.Would you mind very much Severus if I took a look at the book? I would return it to you promptly, of course.\"

\" If you think it is truly necessary.\" Severus sighed he really didn\'t want to share the journal but after all Albus had done for him over the years he couldn\'t deny the Headmaster something so small. \"Accio Journal\"

A few minutes later the journal flew into the room to Severus\'s hand and he handed it to Albus.

Albus read over the journal carefully. She seemed no more than what she appeared to be. Perhaps Severus had found what he needed in this female. His mind set to working as he remembered hearing fragments of a conversation that dealt with something similar. It would be dangerous to her and he would have to do research. He looked up finally.

\"I believe you will find that she has written one last entry for you and you were correct. She knows of your involvement with Riddle and seems merely concerned for your safety. Castrating Potter and Black? Well...I am sure it *did* occur ou mou more than a few times. I will not ask to read this journal again as it *is* a private thing and I trust you. Evidently... so does she.\" Something else he needs... faith from someone other than himself and the teachers in the know about Hogwarts. \"I again ask you to be careful. I have some research that I need to do, Severus. Please feel free to talk to me at anytime.\"

Taking Albus\' words as a dismissal Severus wished him a good night and floo\'ed back to roo rooms not wanting to take the long walk to the dungeons. Taking a few moments Severus prowled his private lab for Albus’s spy. What was it he said? A spider told him?
