Chapter 28 The Magnolia Wedding
It was an elegant and smartly dressed set of men that walked through Malfoy Manor. As they neared the French doors leading into the gardens, Lucius stopped them. Harry moved in closer to his husband and waited.
Lucius began speaking, haltingly, trying to get the words out. “My beloved son, Draco. Tonight you start on a path that will be everything – smooth, rough in places, happy, sad. It is part of a relationship, a marriage. Make very sure in your deepest heart of hearts that this is what you have chosen for life, that you will be complete when you lie down at night, when you wake up next to him, and all through the day. Be fair to Severus right now. Look him in the eyes and let him see your soul. If you can’t be everything and share everything, good and bad, set him free now.”
Draco looked at his father and turned to Severus. The love and every emotion going through him were in his eyes for the dark Slytherin to see and feel. Severus looked into his blond’s eyes and registered everything Draco was feeling. He felt it building in himself also, as the words Lucius spoke filled his mind and heart.
Lucius witnessed the exchange and smiled. He had one more ‘speech’ before they went to the gardens. “Severus, my friend, my compatriot. We’ve been as close as brothers; we’ve shared many things. Tonight, I am entrusting my son’s complete life and happiness to you. You watched over him before. Tonight you take him to be a part of you. He is more precious to me than you will know until you hold your own children. Love him wholly, unconditionally, totally, through bad and good times or let him go now.”
Severus’ gaze had never faltered or left Draco’s. Stepping up to him, Severus tilted the blond’s face up to his. “Draco, good, bad, rough, smooth, loving, fighting, and hormonal urges and mood swings, I pledge my life, love and being to you. Never doubt my love for you, even if you don’t hear it. I will show you what I can’t find the words to say.”
Draco had a single tear running down the finely chiseled cheek. Reaching up, he closed the gap between them. As his lips reached Severus’, he whispered quietly a little signal they had worked on before. It was so simple but conveyed so much. As lips met, his father and Harry heard him whisper “Ditto”.
The kiss finally broke off and they turned to see the smiling and embracing example in front of them. Harry cleared his throat and adjusted his shoulders. “Gentlemen, we have a wedding to attend.” He and Lucius opened the doors as the other couple slowly made their way out of the doors, walking proudly next to each other. Both were emitting just enough “arrogance” for everyone to see they meant business.
As they neared the Magnolia Gardens, Draco gasped and clutched at Severus’ hand for a moment to stop him. Looking at the site in disbelief he turned to Harry and moved to him. Throwing his arms around the Gryffindor, he leaned in and whispered “Thanks Dad.” Harry smirked, turned Draco back to Severus and joined hands with Lucius.
With a wave of his hand, Harry had music playing softly. The guests turned from their seats among the fragrant blooming trees and faerie lights to see the four men walk through the trees to the altar. All smiled when they heard the song being played. As strains of Frank Sinatra’s ‘It Had to Be You’ played, they moved to the altar. People were in for a surprise tonight.
Albus met the couples under the eldest tree. As he began the traditional ceremony, the soon-to-be’s looked at each other. Albus paused in the ceremony and Severus and Draco began singing to the music. “It Had To Be You” resonated through the Gardens. When they were done, Albus picked up the binding cords. As he intoned the ancient and traditional ritual, the guests began responding in the appropriate places. When the last cord was in place and the knot tied, Severus and Draco looked at each other and began singing again. The combination of their voices had the gathering sitting still and in rapture as the strains of ‘All That I Am’ echoed through the trees. Their perfect harmony astounded everyone except the other three at the altar. They had heard the two sing at different times through the castle and it hadn’t been hard to imagine the blend of their voices.
Their singing over, they turned to look at Albus. The Headmaster stood with eyes twinkling. Lifting their tied hands for their guests to see, Albus brandished his hand over the bindings, all watching as it removed itself and traveled to the altar. A protective barrier appeared over the binding, sealing it in a protective bubble. Albus Dumbledore smiled again. “Young ones, you may now seal your joining in front of your guests in the time immortal fashion.”
Severus smiled at Draco, placing his free hands on the upturned face. Draco lifted his hand to cup the dark Slytherin’s face. Their lips met in a gentle kiss. The sudden burnished yellow light surrounding them caused the audience to gasp. The newlyweds were oblivious of the excitement forming around them. Their bodies moved together as one, completing this part of the bonding.
Harry turned to Lucius and seeing his tears, pulled him into a kiss that would scorch the earth. Harry’s shirt was off with a wave of his free hand and his Veela wings unfurled to close around Lucius, protecting him and comforting him. Their kiss broke apart and Harry turned his husband around to watch the newlyweds in front of them.
The Slytherin grooms finally concluded their kiss. The guests let out a collective sigh. The magic around these two was strong. They turned to their guests, each wearing a smile that transformed their faces. Draco glanced around the assembled guests. His eyes finally alighting on the Magnolias. With a gasp, he tugged on Severus hand, leading them deeper into the gardens. Stopping just before the middle entrance, he turned to his husband. “Severus, take off your shoes, socks, and robe.” He began removing his own items. The older man followed him and soon Draco moved into the garden with Severus in tow.
The guests could see them thanks to the blinking faerie lights and hear Draco’s tinkling laughter echo through the trees. Draco moved through the trees with Severus close behind. He finally found the grandfather tree and ran to it, wrapping his arms around it. He communicated his thanks for providing the blossoms for tonight and promised to teach their children respect and love for the trees. He moved just far enough to grab Severus and push him back against the tree. Taking Severus’ hand in his, Draco moved them so the overlapped and both still touched the tree. Severus was not really startled as he felt the tree respond to both of them. It was a welcoming and promise all in one. He realized why this was his blond’s favorite tree and he silently vowed he would make sure there were Magnolias wherever they lived.
Draco held on to his husband’s hands still and turned around, wrapping Severus’ strong warm arms around him. The young blond looked at the gathering. His father and step-dad, his close friends, Severus’ friends and a few mutual people they knew were there. It was then he noticed the reception area. There were going to have a superb time as he watched one particular wizard begin a warm-up. ‘Oh yes’ he thought, ‘it will be phenomenal.’
