Battleground

Chapter 28

Battleground

The teenagers knew that this was a kill or be killed situation, and that there was no time for hesitation or second guessing. They anxiously waited within the relative safety of the triangle created by the shimmering patronus. The illuminated animals stood before their respective owners, keeping the hooded dementors at bay.

“Are you sure you know how to handle your patronus Diggory?” Draco ribbed, despite the current situation. He stood behind a silver tiger, which swung its tail and flexed its long claws in preparation for the imminent battle.

“I don’t think this is the time for your snarky attitude Malfoy,” Cedric responded hastily. At that precise moment his patronus, a misty-silver fox, charged an approaching dementor. The hooded ghoul and those behind it reeled, flying backward into the darkening sky.

“You boys are quite funny, but maybe we should save the jokes for when we are not being attacked by these ghastly creatures.” Luna turned to spur her golden unicorn into battle, clapping and cheering joyously as the mythical horse galloped through a particularly large group of ghost-like beings.

Draco’s tiger joined the other animals, leaping into the dark mass that was the dementors. With little effort, the three patronus banished the dark beings, sending them flying into the sky and away from the brilliance of their self-produced illumination. Three misted beings dissolved and returned to the wands that released them. The teens did not, however, let their guards down, for there was still the very real threat of the death eaters; who had waited at the sidelines while the dementors ambushed the trio.

“Bloody good for nothing dementors! The dark lord has too much faith in those blasted weaklings,” the tallest death eater exclaimed, stepping forward to lead the others into battle. The other masked men followed reluctantly, fearing the wrath of a certain dog demon after he discovered that his teammates were attacked.

“At the ready men, these little punks won’t be that hard to finish off. When we finish with them we can find that Potter brat.”

Taking encouragement from their temporary leader, the remaining death eaters raised their wands to the three teens.

“Any plans, Malfoy?” Cedric asked, taking a fighting stance and training his wand on the masked man closest to himself.

“This is war Diggory, just do whatever pops into that miniscule brain of yours and look out for yourself!”

Cedric growled under his breath, then sighed, knowing that Draco was right, and that there was no time to defer to the blond prat with matters such as what move he should make.

“For once, Malfoy, we are on the same page.”

That said, the three yelled their curses in unison, all hoping that the only blood that would be shed belonged to the masked beings, and not the other way around.

Harry was beyond fatigued, yet he mustered all of the energy he could to attack the creature that flew at him. He was about to lunge, fangs bared, when he stopped dead in his tracks. Before him stood a scraggly black canine that looked remarkably similar to Sirius in his animagus form. Although the pitiful-looking creature was only half the size of Harry in his canine form, he seemed bold and almost regal. He stared at the larger black dog with intelligent eyes.

‘Who are you?’ Harry growled threateningly, crouching in preparation of an oncoming attack. The beast may not look threatening, but in his weakened state, he wouldn’t be surprised if the mutt got the better of him.

‘I am friend, Harry, nothing more than an ally in the battle against Lord Voldemort.’

Harry was briefly astounded by the fact that he could communicate with the mangy dog, yet he quickly decided it was actually quite natural, for he too was canine.

‘You resemble someone I know, a family member of mine…And how the hell do you even know my name?’ Harry growled as an afterthought, not willing to allow the resemblance sway his better judgment and instincts.

The smaller dog sat on its haunches, regarding Harry as if he was quite amused by the whole situation. Harry remained on guard, standing over the other dog in a dominating fashion. The whole while he wanted nothing more than to lie down and rest his aching body. He was not, however, about to show any amount of weakness to this stranger, no matter how tired his body was.

‘You can stand down, Harry. As I mentioned before, I am a friend. The reason I seem familiar to you should be quite obvious. I don’t remember you to be so thick headed, Harry… determined, yes, but not slow.’

Harry’s emerald eyes roved over the coal colored dog, squinting as he tried to decide if he was really seeing what he saw in the familiar black dog.

‘Sirius?’ Harry inquired, stepping forward tentatively. His heart thudded rapidly as he approached the other canine, hoping that this was not some sort of illusion or even delusion brought about from his fight with the werewolf or his steep fall.

‘Almost, Harry, but not quite. I was conjured by the beings that surround Sirius in limbo, based on his memories and life while he walked the earth. The spirits around Sirius felt his turmoil over your disappearance and deemed it appropriate to send me and a few others through the steadily growing rip in our dimension that links to yours. We tracked separate dog demon auras and deduced that you were here, since you are somewhat close to the place you were last traced to.’

Harry’s excitement vanished when he discovered that this dog was not his god father, but a well executed imitation. Yet he had to put his disappointment aside when he decided that Draco and his pack were of more importance for the moment.

‘Well, you found me mutt, now I must leave. I have to find my mate and pack before something bad happens to them.’

‘It will take a few days, but I can aid you in finding them if you wish.’

Harry regarded the copy of his god father skeptically, his head tilted to the side.

‘I thought you said that I was relatively close to where I was last sensed.’

The smaller dog snorted, shaking his head as if shaking off water.

‘I meant in the sense of location purposes in regards to other dog demon wielders. There are few dog demons in the world, and even fewer with wizard blood in the mix. I would say that there are about fourteen in England, and they are spread about quite a ways, so we were pretty much certain that the dog demon aura we picked up was yours.’

‘Yeah yeah, look, I don’t have time to argue with you. We need to get to my pack as soon as humanly possible.’

‘Humanly?’

Harry growled in aggravation. The Sirius look-alike bared its fangs in a toothy grin.

‘I am sorry, Harry, I couldn’t resist. Let’s go find your pack mates.’

With that the smaller dog bounded off, yipping for Harry to follow. The dog demon carrier did not need further prompting, and sprinted after the retreating canine.

‘I am coming Draco… I am coming.’
