Chapter Twenty-Six

Lentesco – Chapter Twenty-Six

Harry sat on his bed, chewing his lip and trying not to cry. Only that day he had had a run in with the Marauders. He had hoped, somehow that the memories he had seen of his father and Sirius had been wrong, but no, they had been as arrogant and awful to Severus as the older man had always said…

“Well, Snivelly, got a new friend?” Black had sneered and Harry had felt his heart sink, this was how Sirius greeted a visitor to the school?

Harry’s dad had looked at him then and had spoken more pleasantly, which had made him feel happier,

“Hi.”

His next words had left a sour taste in Harry’s mouth.

“I really don’t understand why you chose to stay with the Slytherins, unless you wanted experience of how snakes crawled about.”

Harry couldn’t pull his gaze away from the brown eyes, so unlike his own natural ones. He knew he looked hurt, and couldn’t stop it. This was his father and he was judging him purely based on the fact that he was staying with the Slytherins?!

Sirius’ next crude comments had been too much for Harry, who had burst out with, “How can you be so horrible?! Why do you hate Severus? Why? What did he ever do to you that you had to keep punishing him for?”

He hadn’t expected his godfather’s reaction. Black had thrown back his head and roared with laughter. “My god! He’s mental! Ok, Snivs, what potion did you dose him with? No way does he like you unless you’ve forced him too.”

Feeling his blood boil, Harry had clenched his hand to force himself to not draw his wand.

“Sirius, you’re an idiot. You never could let things go! God, you’re such a jerk right now!”

Black had looked taken aback. “Have we met?”

Harry chewed his lip meditatively, he shouldn’t have said that; it had been a stupid slip up, but he hadn’t been able to bear Sirius’ attitude for another second. Still, he thought he had covered up quite well.

“No, I just can see what you’re like already. You’ll never let things go, even when you grow up I bet you’re still vile to Snape.”

“I never want to see the greasy git again after I leave here!” Sirius had snapped back, “He’s an evil, pathetic loser!”

The American sighed. How had it got so out of control so quickly? He and Severus had stood side by side, wands pointed at the throat of a man who would one day be wrongfully convicted of murder. Almost insane with anger, Harry had dared the Marauders to attack.

“Try it, go on, just try it.”

Luckily, it seemed the others had realised jut how serious he was and had backed down, although Sirius’ parting threat had concerned Harry, but Severus had sneered at it in contempt.

Now, thinking back on what had happened, Harry was ready to cry. Every hope and belief he had had in the basic goodness of his father and Sirius had been destroyed by that one encounter. And worse, he couldn’t even do anything about it. He couldn’t speak to the adult versions of them and share how he felt about it. They were all gone.

Dead.

He felt sick, as he suddenly realised how few of the people alive now wouldn’t be when he returned to his own time.

Had they realised how short life was? Known how precious every moment was? Harry gasped as he understood how precious his own time with Severus was. He had to have his moment with Severus; if he never solved the problem of Severus’ condition, he had to at least have one time with the man.
