Chapter 25
Previously:
Draco kissed his dark Slytherin and stood and went to his father. “Father there is something you need to know. I’ve been taking university courses by owl post. I am only 2 courses shy before I can sit for the final tests. I want to be a ..” Draco stopped, closed his eyes and took a deep breath.
The men leaned forward, eagerly awaiting the rest of Draco’s announcement. The young blond sucked in a big breath and started again. “I’m studying to be a barrister.” He looked around at the various reactions from each person. Harry was grinning as if he had known all along and wasn’t surprised. Severus and Lucius sat in their chairs in respective shock. Lucius could not believe his ears – his son wanted to be a barrister? Harry picked up the waves of anguish coming from his husband and could see the trauma reflected in Severus’ eyes. Harry also picked up confusion and regret from Draco and knew he had to step in.
“Lucius, Severus, Draco. Please listen to me. Draco has been working very hard to get to this level of his education. We all know my son” Harry stopped and beamed at Draco and continued “loves to argue a point. Can any of you name a better occupation for him? Do any of you realize he will be getting paid obscene amounts of galleons to do what he loves best? It will be fine. He can finish his courses and test out for his license to practice. We need to start planning a celebration – it’s not everyday a wizard can stand up to the rigors of the goblin’s legal teaching staff. Congratulations Draco, well done son.”
Harry’s speech served its purpose. Lucius got up and embraced his son in a crushing hug. “This is the year for Malfoys to break all types of traditions. I must admit I am quite proud of you Draco. It’s a sign to the Wizarding World that times are changing for the better. We’ll talk more later though. We have other things to see to. The sooner we get the unpleasant task done, the sooner we can get to your wedding.” Lucius hugged his son again and kissed him on the forehead, nose, each cheek and then lips. Draco beamed at his father. Harry made a mental note to ask Lucius about that later.
Severus sat and watched all of this unfold. He finally stood and pulled Draco into his arms. “When were you planning on telling me, even though I will support you in whatever you choose to do? I, too, am proud of you.” Severus brought him against his chest and kissed him long and leisurely. They broke apart in time to see Harry wipe the tears from Lucius’ face. Harry looked at them and then the wizard clock. “Gentlemen. We have to go now. It wouldn’t do for us to be late.”
He escorted Severus and Draco to the door while his arm was wrapped around Lucius’ waist. The four left the dungeons and headed to the apparation point. Lucius wrapped his arms around Harry to take him since Harry wasn’t familiar with the landing point. Severus and Draco went ahead and disapparated to the Black Estates. Harry and Lucius showed up directly behind them. The officials were gathered and had been waiting. Harry looked around and realized it was much like a Muggle funeral. Arthur came over, shaking hands with the family. They had all managed to put resentment behind them with the end of the war. It wasn’t well known, but with the decease of Voldemort, a curse on the Weasley’s was banished and things were looking up.
The funeral official joined the gathering, escorted them to their seats and began the services. Lucius had insisted on privacy and that’s what they had. The services were kept short but traditional. When the internment was concluded, the funeral director excused himself. Lucius turned to the rest of the gathered and suggested they go to Malfoy manor for the rest of the formalities. They all disapparated over and settled into Lucius’ office. Lucius settled in his chair behind his desk with Harry behind him, resting his hands on the blond’s shoulders. Severus and Draco settled on the couch. Arthur moved a chair so he could look at them all. He cleared his throat in nervousness and pulled a parchment from a robe pocket.
Arthur cleared his throat again. “Gentlemen, I would like to express my sincere condolences for your loss.”
This was greeted with four snorts. Lucius looked at Arthur before stating. “Arthur, we appreciate your thoughts at this time. We do have to admit that this is not exactly a grieving occurrence for us. May we just please get the will reading over with? We still have things to do for Draco & Severus’ wedding,”
Arthur nodded and broke the seal on the parchment. Reading it over once real fast, the other men couldn’t believe the emotions that crossed his face. He shook his head and finally began with “ I am going to skip the beginning of the formalities, naming names, et cetera. Now, to the crux of the matter. Narcissa Black Malfoy left very distinct instructions for the disposal of her material goods.”
“To my son Draco Lucius Malfoy, you were an enigma to me, but my beloved son. I want only the best for you, therefore I have set the following conditions for your inheritance”
You will inherit my share of the Black Estates. In the event that I am the only survivor, it is all yours. If and only if, you meet the following conditions:
a. You are not involved with a male or female Muggle.
b. You will only marry a pureblood.
c. You will make sure you carry on the Black and Malfoy name with a genetic child, not an adopted one.
d. You will make sure Harry James Potter does not grace your bed.
I am not asking for much, son, just the continuance of our pureblood lines. If you fail to meet these requirements, all my possessions will go to a Muggle Museum and you can buy back anything you want”
Arthur stopped reading, took a deep breath, looked at the gathered and began again.
“In respect to my husband, my widower. I leave you the best of all. It is my dying that will enable you to continue to have heirs. I only wish I were there to see the divination come true. It was told to me years ago, that you would have children with a half blood or Muggle. I’m not really sorry Lucius, but I hope you revert to your old ways before our marriage. Go find a \"better man”. I’d love to see who gets impregnated. I can just imagine your face right now. Just know that I’m laughing at you, wherever I am.” Arthur stopped and looked around again.
“Gentlemen the next part is even more disturbing. As soon as I finish reading this, I will take my leave.” He looked back to the scroll.
“To Harry James Potter, bane of my existence, I am leaving you with the wish that it is you Lucius lusts after. He will never lower himself to be with you, if he is faithful to our Dark Lord and Master. If by some chance he gets past his allegiance, I wish you the joy he never shared with me. Yes, Potter, I am bitter at this time to think a younger man can take what I have wanted forever. I only wanted his love. To help you with this, there is a book in my collection in my library. The title is “A Study of the Invidious Malfoy Patriarch”. It is a collection of my observances of his life and behavioral patterns over the years. I only hope it helps or maybe he’s changed his ways. You have my blessings Potter, and my sympathies. Don’t let him push you aside or make you his trophy bitch like he did me. I only hope you have enough magic left after the battle to impregnate him several times. It would serve him right, with his attitude, to lose his figure. Gods, how I wish I could see it! And people thought I had no sense of humor! I only wish I didn’t have to die for it to come about.”
Arthur paused for a minute, looking at everyone and started again. “A last bequeath since another vision has come to me. I leave Pansy Parkinson my collection of child rearing books. Tell Pansy to read them and learn from them. Then ignore them. The only thing they are good for is to sell and get some money for. Tell her I said she has to learn to deal with children as little individuals, jut remember they are not little adults. Let them have time to play and explore when they are little. The rewards of watching that miracle unfold is better than anything a budding evil scientist can create. I also leave her 150,000 galleons from my account to help her.”
“My last words are for Severus Snape. You were a good spy, but not good enough. Do you know how many times I deflected suspicion from you? I hope you are better with my grandchildren. Yes, Severus, I know too that you are a predominant factor in my son’s life. It wasn’t quite clear, but I saw the two of you together and both of you pregnant. Maybe it won’t be impossible for my son to inherit. Make sure you take exceptional care with my most precious possession or I’ll come back and make Peeves look like a fluffy bunny.”
“I won’t make it any sappier family, just live life, love and laugh from here out. Wipe away the tears, yes men, it’s okay to cry –in private, thank you – smile and confuse the world and go on. Long life. See you on the other side.”
