Engagement
The next day, everyone went out, Petunia and her father to work, and her mother shopping and to a friend’s house afterwards, so Lily and James had the house to themselves for a few hours.
“What would you like to do?” Lily asked as she lounged on the sofa, still in pajamas as she flipped through the channels.
“Anything,” James said sitting next to her on the couch, then adjusted so his head was sitting in her lap as he glanced at the television.
Lily absentmindedly began to run her fingers through his hair, as she stopped on the news, since it was the only thing on really.
Grinning, James adjusted his head to give her more area, and shut his eyes at the attention he loved when she played with his hair.
“There have been people going missing left and right these days,” Lily said as the news talked about a family of five that had disappeared from their home three days ago. She knew exactly why they were gone, but muggles had no idea.
“I know love, this has been going on since I was about nine years old,” James replied opening his eyes to look up at her. He could see the sadness on her face. “It will stop though I promise.”
“I hope so,” Lily said changing the channel again looking for something else to watch that was not so depressing. “What time are your parents coming?” She asked finding a game show on T.V. before tossing the remote on the coffee table.
“Around five,” James said stretching a bit. “Then on Friday they will be here around noon to get you.”
“Sounds good, then the train back is Sunday morning right?” Lily asked, to which James just shook his head yes.
“I need to shower,” Lily said randomly after sitting and watching television in silence for about fifteen minutes.
“Go shower then,” James said with a smile, sitting up off the couch to allow her to get up.
“What are you going to do?” Lily asked not wanting to leave him alone.
“Watch T.V.” James said with a shrug grabbing the remote. She had taught him how to change the channel, adjust the volume and how to turn it off, it wasn’t that difficult to understand.
Lily showered, then blow dried her hair straight before returning downstairs to find James watching the television intently.
“What’s on?” She asked him as she took a seat next to him. She noticed that while she was gone he had changed out of his pajamas and into clothes for the day.
“A show about planes,” James said not looking at her, he was highly interested in how these things worked without magic, they were so big, they should just fall out of the sky.
“Ah yes,” Lily said. “They terrify me, nothing that big should be able to fly.”
“I agree,” James said finally tearing his attention away from the screen.
They spent the rest of the day watching television, talking, and for about an hour Lily took James to an empty lot and started to teach him how to drive. He was very confused, and once he came within an inch of hitting a light post, they called it a day. At five his parents arrived to bring him home, and Lily spent the night watching a movie with her parents grateful that Petunia was out on a date with Vernon.
Thanksgiving went off without a hitch at the Evans house, and at the Potters, though it was chaotic with all the family members there. James at one point ended up locked in a closet by his younger cousins, they have convinced him they were playing hide and seek, even Sirius was in on it. His cousin Michelle, who was a year younger than him came and set him free about ten minutes later.
Lily arrived at James on Friday at midday, and she was glad to be out of her house, she loved her parents but her and Petunia’s relationship was like fire and ice. The rest of their break was fun, they spent their time out shopping, and Sunday before the train, they went to Diagon Alley to pick up some school supplies. Once back at school everything was the same, classes were getting harder since it was their last year, and teachers were trying to prepare them for the world outside of Hogwarts walls.
Christmas break came and passed, and Lily was home for the lovely occasion of Petunia and Vernon getting engaged. Honestly, she was not shocked, they deserved one another, the nasty people that they were. Her parents were happy, then joked with Lily when were her and James going to get married, which put Lily in an awkward spot since they had only been together for about two months. Sure she had thought about it, but it seemed too soon, even for her tastes.
