Nobody Likes To Get Slimed
Chapter 25 Nobody Likes To Get Slimed
The next two days passed by quickly and it was time for the trio to meet up and scope out the Chamber. They weren't sure what exactly they would be looking for, but they had come to the conclusion that they only needed to find Hufflepuff's cup and something of Ravenclaw's. Already destroyed was the diary, the ring, and the locket, leaving three more items and Voldemort himself. And since Dumbledore had been so firm in his beielf that Nagini was a horcrux, even if she wasn't Hermione didn't want to go against the idea.
They had come to the conclusion that Voldemort wouldn't have been able to get his hands on anything Gryffindor's, and even if he had the only two things known to belong to that man had been in Dumbledore's possession. Once the old man had figured about the horcruxes he would have checked both the items for the spells they would be under.
They met in the common room. It took a bit to leave without Ginny following them. Ever since her and Harry had started dating last year she had become a nuisance, always around. Now that they were no longer dating, though, she was free to go about being the slut she had been beforehand. But it seemed she only wanted to hang around the trio. Whenever she was with them she always acted like her old self but when she was with anyone else she was now quiet and reserved, and wouldn't let the others draw her out of her shell she had created. Her friends were getting worried, but she hadn't given Pomfrey any reason to have her pulled from school in their daily meetings.
Huddled close together under the cloak with the Marauder's Map in front of them they made their way to the second floor girls lavatory. Hermione, having heard about the slime on the way down the pipe put repelling spells on each of them. After having a short, umm, conversation(?) with Moaning Myrtle Harry spoke to the sink in Parsletongue and opened up the entrance.
They landed on the pile of bones, causing Hermione to wrinkle her nose in disgust. As they walked down the hall of serpents, Hermione told them to walk slowly and look everywhere for something out of place. There was nothing in the hall, and so they made their way into the chamber proper.
Hermione and Harry's faces both turned a distinct green, and Ron couldn't stop the impulse to throw up. Right where it had been left in their second year was the basilisk, not completely rotten through even after all these years. Hermione supposed that they should have expected this. After all, the thing had lived for hundreds of years and it didn't look as though there was really any other animals here; they had probably learnt long ago to stay away. She performed a bubble head charm on herself and the men followed suit. She really had issues thinking of them as men since they rarely ever acted so, but in all technicality that's what they were.
They searched every part of the room from the floor to the ceiling in every nook and cranny and found nothing. In Hermione's refusal to accept that nothing was there, she looked at the monkey-man statue. His mouth that the basilisk had origionally slithered from was still open. Shuddering at the though of going in there, she pointed out the cavern to Harry.
His face turned resolute as he considered the place, peeking into the opening. He nodded and they all lumosed up their wands. They slowly walked through the hole, finding another slimy hallway. After a few minutes of walking gingerly they came across a room on the right side. Entering the room, they found a study. Or at least, what used to be a study. The books were almost entirely disintegrated, and the wooden shelves they were seated upon were rotten through, as was the desk. Enerything was covered in inches of dust.
They looked around, doing convincing fish impersonations. Hermione was the first to step into the room, the others quickly following suit. They searched, trying to stir up as little dust as possible. They hadn't needed the fishbowls on their heads for the smell any more and didn't want to put them back on until it was necessary. Just when they were about to leave the room, Hermione noticed a spot where the dust was only about an inch thick; significanly less than the rest of the room.
She went over to the spot and cast a cleaning charm to reveal a chess table with what looked like a false top. She motioned for her accomplices to come over and help her remove the heavy lid. Once it was off, they stared transfixed at the only item inside. A blue and bronze barette with a raven in the middle. "I think this is it," she whispered with awe in her voice. "It's beautiful," she said picking it up and looking it over before handing it over to Harry.
A wide grin spread across his face. "Now all we have to do is get back and figure out how to destroy it." He held it out for Ron to get a good look as well. He then handed it back to his female counterpart. "Hermione, you should keep it in your room. Less people can et in there, and no one would wonder about you having a barette. I don't think Ron or I would be able to live it down if one of the guys saw that with either of our stuff."
"I think you're right, Harry. Now let's find a way out of here." She smiled to herself at the thought that she didn't have to make the suggestion herself. They went back into the slimy tunnel and followed it to its end, making sure to not go down any of the side tunnels that came out of everywhere. It ended in another door with snakes locking it, identical to the one they had to go through to get into the first tunnel.
Harry told the door to open, and they walked out into the night near the Forbidden Forest. Turning around to look where they came out of they only saw a cluster of trees, as though the tunnel didn't exist. Shrugging their shoulders they crowded back under the cloak and got the map back out. As they were crossing the grounds, Hermione felt the twinge in her breast of the Dark Lord's call.
They dropped her at her room before heading up to the Gryffindor dorm. She felt the twinge again, much stronger, and was happy that she had been able to get the map away from Harry long enough to befuddle it to think that she was in her room whenever she disappeared. She quickly cast a Scourgify on herself as she put on her robes, hiding the barette in the inside pocket. She went into the bathroom, put the strongest locking charm she could muster on Zabini's door, stepped into the tub and apparated to her Master.
