Chapter 25 ~ Breaking & Entering: Hermione-Style
Severus was acting much calmer than he actually was for his wife’s sake. He was badly shaken. He recognized that creature was a panther. Not only that but an unnatural creature, given its glowing eyes. Where did it come from, and why didn’t it kill him when it had him pinned beneath it? It certainly meant to kill his wife, and Marcus. If not for the creature’s eyes he might have thought it an inhabitant of the Forbidden Forest. There were too many questions here, and no satisfactory answers.
Hermione walked in her husband’s embrace. She leaned into him, and sniffed. Suddenly, she stiffened. Severus stopped.
“Hermione, what’s wrong?” he asked, as she pressed her face into his robes and inhaled deeply.
“I know that scent! It’s Odessa’s familiar!” she exclaimed, transforming and taking off at a gallop towards the castle, startling Severus.
“Hermione!” he cried after her. He transformed and slithered after her, whipping through the grounds of Hogwarts in hot pursuit. He hoped no one saw them. He caught up to Hermione just before she reached the lights of the castle and wound himself around her, holding her as she snarled and slashed to get free. But his scales protected him, and he crushed her slightly, to calm her lioness form. Finally, she transformed back to human form within his coils. He changed back as well, pulling her to her feet and holding her firmly in front of him by both arms.
“Hermione, what were you thinking? You can’t charge into Hogwarts in your lioness form. You’ll scare someone to death,” he said, frowning at his panting wife.
“Severus, I smell Odessa’s familiar on you. That’s what attacked us. I bet she sent it after us,” she said. “It’s the same scent I smelled on Marcus, and the same scent marked around the Potions office door. Odessa is behind this. I want to see her, and see her right now!” she said, storming off again towards Hogwarts.
Severus followed her, knowing that there was nothing he could say to stop her. Plus, her lioness form lent her a powerful sense of smell…he believed her, though he had seen no sign of Odessa having a familiar.
They entered the castle, and Hermione made a beeline for the dungeon hallway. Almost jogging, she hurried past her and Severus’ rooms and to Odessa’s. She banged on the door.
“Open up, Odessa!” she yelled, beating on the door some more, “I need to talk to you right now!”
There was no answer. Hermione continued to beat on the door, frustrated. She pulled out her wand and tested the door. Odessa had put up wards, but there was no ward that could hold back the Spells Mistress once she got it in her mind to crack it.
Severus walked up to her.
“Hermione, what are you doing?” he asked.
“She almost killed us. I’m going to see what the hell she has in here,” Hermione spat, working on the wards.
“But, Hermione…” Severus started. She spun on him.
“Severus, this is between me and Odessa. I love you, but back off!” she said her eyes glittering at her husband. Severus went silent. He had never seen her like this. She looked absolutely ferocious, her eyes slitted, her nostrils flared, her mouth held in a snarl. He’d be glad when she got used to her form. She was almost frightening like this.
He watched as she undid Odessa’s wards. She tried the door. It was locked.
“Alohamora,” she said, unlocking it and pushing the door in. She entered the room and waved her wand so it was illuminated. She sniffed.
“I smell the familiar, Marcus, Odessa, sex and blood,” she said. Keeping her wand drawn she went into Odessa’s bedroom. No one was there. She entered the loo. Nothing there either. She walked back out into the living room. Severus stood just inside the door, uncomfortable with the intrusion, but unwilling to leave his wife alone. Hermione looked at the office door. She opened it. Nothing special. Then she noticed the storage room. It was dark underneath the door. She placed her ear against it, listening. No sound. She tried the door. It was also warded. Why would she ward a storage room? She wasn’t a teacher with supplies. Hermione went to work on the wards.
“Hermione, what are you doing in there?” Severus hissed, looking down the corridor then at the room Hermione had disappeared into.
Hermione didn’t answer him. She worked on the wards. They were very strong, stronger than the ones leading into her rooms. Why? Hermione perspired as she tried one spell after another. Finally she broke the wards. She tried the door. It opened easily. The room was black. She held up her wand.
“Lumos” she said, and her wand emitted enough light to see by.

Odessa woke sitting up against a tree. Disoriented, she looked around. She was in a forest. There was no sound at all. It was completely silent. That was strange. It was night and a full moon to boot. There should be some activity. Normally, there would be, if a red-eyed panther hadn’t roared through the wood, making everything flee.
Odessa felt rather achy in her side. She lifted her robes. There was a slight bruise along her ribcage. She traced it with her fingers. It hurt, but not too badly. She stood up, and peered through the intersecting limbs at the sky. Yes, she could see the stars and oriented on them, finding her direction. Drawing her wand, she walked back toward the castle, the lights in the sky guiding her to the edge of the forest. She transformed and picked her way over the roots of trees until she was free of the woods. She sniffed the air, and could still smell Hermione and Severus. There was another aroma. Marcus. Her back arched. There was no scent of blood, though the scent of fear and rage hovered in the air. She smelled the lioness…and yes a small amount of blood, but not human. Hermione’s animagus must have been injured. But there was not enough blood-scent for the injury to be fatal, or even dangerous.
Odessa couldn’t understand. The couple had been fucking, they weren’t aware of her when the beast came out. It should have got them, or at least Hermione. It wouldn’t have hurt Severus. There was only one answer. Marcus. He had betrayed her and interfered somehow. That was the only explanation. But where had they gone? Shit. She needed to get back to her rooms.
The black cat streaked along the grounds, heading for Hogwarts castle as quick as its four legs would carry her.

Hermione stared, her mouth open. Her eyes roamed across one wall, then the next, then the next, even craning her neck to see the ceiling. She was speechless, just speechless. She remembered to take a breath. Shaking a bit, she called her husband.
“Severus. Come in here. You’ve got to see this,” she said, almost whispering.
“What?” Severus said, unwilling to intrude any further into Odessa’s domain.
“Severus! Get in here!” Hermione hissed.
Taking one final look down the hall, Severus swept into Odessa’s rooms, walked into the office and the small storage room.
