CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE: PLANS PT #2: REVENGE

Lucius Malfoy was pacing Igor’s small study, his index finger tapping his chin absentmindedly.

He was making sure he had it all worked out.

The first, and most important thing, he reasoned, had been to plant a doubt. That had been done through the means of being nice to that so-called son of his, Draco. Undoubtedly, Draco had run straight to Severus with this – gods, they were so predictable.

The second issue had been for Lucius to arrange a proper meeting during which they wouldn’t be disturbed. What little he knew about his prior life, at least he knew he’d on countless occasions been interrupted during the worst possible scenarios. He wasn’t keen on that happening again.

Igor had set everything up for him. The wards were up, and the invitation was on its way.

It was time for Lucius to get his revenge on Severus Snape.

The week following his Obliviation had been very educational indeed. At first, the only thing he had remembered about his past life had been that very name, Severus Snape. And then, as the week progressed, more and more facts had started to pop back into his head, disordered at first, and then it had slowly all began to make sense.

It was Severus, Lucius’s old friend and ex Death Eater partner, who had Obliviated him. The memory of the flash of light and the dark robes had brought him to this conclusion – that, added with what other information he gathered about Severus through Igor.

The man had betrayed them all – the Death Eaters – and turned to fight for the light, greatly assisting the “good” side’s victory. According to Igor, Severus had grown steadily more cold towards Lucius over the years, and apparently he’d reached his limit during this recent conference, when Lucius had – according to sources sought out by Igor – tried and seduce what was now Severus’s little plaything: the Mudblood Hermione Granger.

Apparently, he’d been spotted on numerous occasions flirting wildly with the young girl, and she’d at first appreciated Lucius’s company. Then later on, several acquaintances of Igor had seen her giving him the cold shoulder – in fact, she had altogether practically stopped showing her face – and whatever he’d done to her must have been what had caused Severus to curse him.

Okay, thought Lucius to himself, so perhaps Severus’d had a good reason for his actions – knowing himself, Lucius knew what he could have done to the girl that would have caused such a result – but he still wanted his revenge.

He’d lost all recollection of whatever brilliant spells and curses he’d known in the past, after all, as well as his entire life history and, to some extent, his intelligence. And Severus Snape would not get away with that.

It was Igor Karkaroff, this mysterious saviour of Lucius’s, who’d taken care of everything. Lucius didn’t know how he could have gotten his revenge without this man – it was Igor who had arranged it all, found out the necessary information for Lucius and even gotten him an agreeable wand with which he could perform what few spells he had now learned over the past two weeks.

So now, he was just making sure everything was set. He could have no mess-ups with this, not if he really wanted his revenge.

For one thing, he could not – absolutely not – have her enter that room with a wand in hand. Young though she may be, the number of spells and curses Hermione Granger knew now greatly outnumbered his own, and she would have no trouble beating him in a duel.

Secondly (and perhaps most importantly, thought Lucius, remembering the talk of Severus Snape’s wrath), he had to make sure Severus would not come to his lover’s rescue. Yet again, this could not have been possible without Igor – it was he who would be causing the “distraction”, on Lucius’s orders (because he would never have volunteered to such an act).

What had at first seemed as the most difficult part – getting a hold of Hermione without having her bring her wand – had strangely proven to be the simplest yet.

All thanks to a certain friend of Hermione’s, Ginny Weasley.

On Lucius’s orders, Igor had during the recent week been very busy, inspecting every little inch of owl post sent to Hermione Granger. As luck would have it, the man was currently stationed at Diagon Alley’s Post Office, and so it was a lot easier for him to have access to the owls, even the private ones, who occasionally dropped by the office to get a bit of a refreshment before continuing their journey.

And so finally, the perfect opportunity had arisen: Ginny Weasley had written Hermione a letter:

Dear Hermione,

How are you? Well, I hope – and congratulations on your newly founded relationship! I’m sorry to say it was unavoidable that pretty much every member of the Weasley clan found out about you and Professor Snape – you know Dumbledore’s never exactly been known for his discretion, and he was here only last week to discuss something with Dad, so there you are.

Don’t worry, though – Ron doesn’t know yet! Nor Harry, as far as I know, I expect you’ll want to tell them yourself. Fred and George went a bit over the edge though, they keep insisting Snape’s put you under some kind of curse... I’ve been trying to convince them otherwise. I seriously think he’s good for you, Hermione, even if he is a bit of an old, greasy git.

But here I am, getting lost – what I really wanted to aas ias if you could meet me in the top room of The Three Broomsticks on the 31st of August, I’ve got a real surprise for you! It’s all got to do with Harry, really, but I bet you’ll love to hear about it.

Oh, and don’t take this the wrong way, but please don’t bring Professor Snape. I’ve got a good reason for that, believe me!

Hope to see you soon!

Love,

Ginny

It had been perfect. With Igor’s help, Lucius had been able to delay this letter for a day whilst altering a few of its facts. He couldn’t change it too much, naturally, because Hermione would be replying to this Weasley girl and there couldn’t be any signs that the letter Hermione received was slightly different from the one Weasley had sent – but they’d sorted that well out, and the room in The Three Broomsticks was perfect for what Lucius had planned.

The owl had been sent off to Hermione that morning, after a bit of altering, and now the plan was set for action. All Lucius now had to do was to wait patiently for the approaching 31st of August.

-

Hermione was actually spending Tuesday the 30th at Hogwarts, in Severus’s quarters. She was planning on dragging herself off to the office later on, but right now she just couldn’t be bothered.

She was curled up on the rug by the hearth in his study, with at least ten of his books sprayed out around her, enjoying one of her favourite pass-times of “book indulging” – a term Severus had invented for her.

He, meanwhile, was sitting at his desk, working on his class schedules, as school was scheduled to start that following Thursday. Occasionally, however, he glanced down at her, sending her the slightest hint of a smirk or grin whenever he felt like it.

Hermione found she just enjoyed being in his company, and was so happy to find out the same went for him. She suspected she’d be spending a lot more time in these dungeons in the weeks approaching... Work or not, she could always get to the office from here, as Severus discreetly had pointed out earlier.

There was a quick knock on the door, followed seconds later by a creaking as it was opened to reveal the tiny Professor Flitwick, who was grinning widely at Hermion
&#
“An owl arrived for you in the Hall,” he beamed, making his way into the room without awaiting Severus’s invitation. He handed Hermione – who was now on eye level with him – the letter, sent a small, excited squeak in Severus’s direction with a final, pointed glance at Hermione and left again.

Severus merely raised an eyebrow as Hermione smiled, tearing open the letter.

“It’s from Ginny,” she said, although shepectpected Severus didn’t really care.

Dear Hermione,

I’m sorry to say it was unavoidable that pretty much every member of the Weasley clan found out about you and Professor Snape – you know Dumbledore’s never exactly been known for his discretion, and he was here only last week to discuss something with dad, so there you are.

I seriously think he’s good for you, Hermione, even if he is a bit of an old, greasy git.

But here I am, getting lost – what I really wanted to ask was if you could meet me in the top room of The Three Broomsticks on the 31st of August, I’ve got a real surprise for you! It’s all got to do with Snape, really, and I bet you’ll love to hear about it.

Oh, and don’t take this the wrong way, but please don’t bring your wand. I’ve got a good reason for that, believe me!

Love,

Ginny

Hermione frowned, read the last sentence again, then looked from the letter to Severus and back to the letter again. What could Ginny possibly have to tell her about Severus – and why didn’t she want Hermione to bring her wand?

“What is it?” asked Severus, who had immediately spotted her hesitation.

“It’s – oh, it’s just something Ginny wrote,” said Hermione, tapping her chin absentmindedly with her index finger.

“What?” repeated Severus, frowning.

“Nothing special,” Hermione reassured him. “I was just wondering for a second... She wants me to meet her in the top room of The Three Broomsticks tomorrow,” she added.

Severus got to his feet, walked around the desk and took a seat in the sofa opposite the hearth rug where Hermione was sitting.

“Are you certain it is from Miss Weasley?” he asked her seriously.

Hermione frowned. So he’d thought the same as she had then – she wasn’t being paranoid; it could be a trick letter from Lucius Malfoy, couldn’t it? But why would he go to such extents as to write about the Weasleys and Hermione’s relationship with Severus? She voiced this thought to Severus.

“Undoubtedly to make you think it is really her,” he said at once.

“Well, what do you suggest I do?” asked Hermione. “I kind of feel like I’m being paranoid for suspecting Lucius...”

“You are not being paranoid,” he said dismissively. “Knowing the man, there is every reason for suspicion.” He got to his feet again to collect a piece of parchment, a quill and an ink bottle from his desk.

“What you should do is write a reply to Miss Weasley,” he said, handing her the parchment, quill and ink bottle. “If she replies and confirms that she has indeed sent you this letter, then there is no reason for worry and you can meet her tomorrow.”

Hermione nodded, and began scribbling her reply.

“And,” Severus added quietly as he took a seat at his desk again, “if you should by any chance find you had time to drop by here after your meeting tomorrow...”

Hermione simply smirked at him.

-

Dear Ginny,

I am fine, thank you – and yourself?

I’m relieved to hear Ron and Harry don’t know about Severus and me yet, I think I need to tell them that myself. It’s coming, I promise, I just have to think of a proper way to approach it. They won’t take it well, I’m certain of it.

I’d be happy to meet you in The Three Broomsticks, you’ve certainly peaked my interest! I’ll oblige your request, although I found it a rather strange one... Oh well, like you said, you probably have your reasons!

Please give me a reply to make sure you’ve received this, okay? And I’m looking forward to meeting you tomorrow!

Love,

Hermione

She smiled and dipped the quill into the ink bottle to write her reply to Hermione.

It had surprised Ginny a little that Hermione had mentioned her comment about not bringing Professor Snape – honestly, had she actually considered bringing him? Ginny was just keen to tell Hermione about Harry’s new hot romance (which she found to be immensely funny), how could Snape possibly be interested in that? He loathed Harry and everything related to him.

Well. Everything except for Hermione, it would seem.

Ginny giggled to herself. The thought of Hermione and Snape being intimate was hilarious, but she was determined not to point that out to Hermione. It wouldn’t be nice – Hermione was happy, and Ginny was not about to mess that up, no matter how ridiculous she found the relationship. And it seemed as though Professor Snape was happy too, at least according to what Dumbledore had said.

Ginny scribbled her reply to Hermione and sent it off with her owl, urging it on to have it reach Hermione’s apartment before it got too late.

Hermione,

hat&hat’s alright then, I’ll be in the room at about five pm. If that’s not suitable, just leave me an owl at the Broomsticks and I’ll wait for you.

You’ll have everything explained tomorrow, I promise!

Ginny

-

Lucius smirked. Finally, Snape would get what was coming to him.
