Last night there had been a ball for Yule Tides held in the Great Hall but I barely remember any of it as I was too anxious about Okinawa, about today, about my sexual training as Uncle Sev had called it. The day before I left Hogwarts Harry and I met in our secret place and we cuddled together and kissed. He promised to write me everyday and I believe him. However, he will have to give Uncle Sev anything he writes to me because there is no telling how long it will take an owl to travel from Scotland to Japan and also Uncle Sev is the only one besides my family that knows of our secret Manor. I am glad that my letters have to come through Uncle Sev because I don't want my parents to know about Harry writing me. I don't want them to know about Harry at all.
Once the Hogwarts Express grounds to a halt I quickly make my way off of the train, having no luggage because everything that I need has already been sent over to Japan or I can acquire it while I am out there. I am in such a daze that I hardly notice Pansy clinging to my arm, chatting animatedly with Blaise and Daphne. When I exit the train I spot my parents' blond heads much sooner than I would have liked though now I do have an excuse to shake Pansy off of me. Pansy frowns at me as I release myself from her tight grip though when she spots my parents her eyes grow large and she gives me a quick hug of farewell before running off to find her own parents.
Throughout the crowded platform other purebloods give my parents nods of greeting and ones of respect as they glide towards me. "Hello, son," Father says, one of his hands on Mother's elbow.
Mother smiles down at me before leaning over to give me a peck on the cheek. "Hello, dear."
"Hello Mother. Father," I say as I give a slight bow in greeting to my parents.
My Mother throws her head back, letting out a soft laugh of pleasure as she takes my hand within her own. "Oh, Draco dear. You must be nervous if you are bowing to your parents. I wonder what has you in such a state." Father chuckles with her and the two of them lead me off of platform 9 3/4 in much haste. When we exit the train station we get in the white town car that Father is so fond of. I nod to our driver who also doubles as our coachman depending on if we are in the muggle or magical world.
"How was your schooling, Master Draco?"
"Acceptable," I say as I settle into the car. The driver nods his head in understanding before starting the car, expertly maneuvering it through traffic. The car ride to the International Floo is quiet. Father is writing a few last minute letters while Mother goes through her date book. To appear inconspicuous I absently flip through some of my holiday homework. I am not even sure if I will get the time to do any of it.
The parchment quivers in my hands and I realize I am too nervous. I put the papers back in my school bag. The car stops. "Oh, here already," Mother says with delight. She hates long journeys. "Come, Draco dear. We mustn't be late. Your Father and I have much to teach you."
I gulp at the ominous words before the driver opens the door. I get out of the car after then I take my Mother's hand in my own, leading the tall blond from the town car. Father exits last and our driver quickly gets back in the car. "You are to retrieve us on the fourth of January."
"Yes, Master Malfoy." My Father doesn't give our driver a time. He never does. A part of me always wondered whether or not our driver would sit in the car for hours on end waiting for us. It is his job, but our traveling schedule is always unpredictable. It wasn't that I felt guilty, it was just that I was curious.
We enter the building which is filled with hundreds of different fireplaces used for flooing witches and wizards all across the wizarding world. The International Floo has always been one of my favorite places because of the variety of people. It is always interesting to observe someone's else culture. When we walk up to the reception desk there is a petite black haired woman and I can't help but think of Harry as my parents' tell her of our destination. The woman nods her head before writing something in the log book. She then stands up, leading us through a back door to the privet floos. We never use the public ones.
"Right this way, Mr. and Mrs. Malfoy. You have a visitor waiting for you. Mrs. LeStrange has been here for a little under five minutes."
My Mother lets out a groan as her and Aunt Bella have always had a sibling rivalry. They compete in everything. My Mother and Aunt Bella together is very unpredictable, though usually I manage to turn their competition in my favor as they vy for my attention. It is invigorating, most of the time, however I do not think that I will appreciate it much this Yule Tides.
"Draco, dear. There you are! Your Aunt Bella has missed you ever so much." Aunt Bella only uses that sappy tone when she talks to me and I give her a smile in greeting. I like Aunt Bella, I really do, but as she hugs me I can't help but cringe a little bit. Any physically contact with Aunt Bella is always a little painful. Her nails always claw in when she hugs, her arms always pull too tight, she always holds the contact for too long. I think it's because Aunt Bella has no kids of her own. Mother says it's because Aunt Bella likes little boys. Sometimes I wonder if she would hug me if I were a girl.
"Well," father says, pulling out his pocket watch. "We should be leaving soon. Every time I travel with you too I am always late for something."
Aunt Bella gives Father a pout and Mother swats his arm playfully before we line up to use the floo. Mother will go first, then Aunt Bell, then me, then Father.
"Okinawa International Floo." There is a swirl of green flames as Mother disappears. Aunt Bell follows thirty seconds later and I wait for the seconds to pass before I step into the fireplace. I throw down the floo powder. "Okinawa International Floo."
The International Floo is actually less dizzying than the usual floo journals. There are no other houses to floo through, just straight to Japan. When I step out of the floo I manage to keep my balance which took many years of practice. Eagerly Aunt Bella helps me dust off my robe, her hands lingering a little longer than necessary. But that's how Aunt Bella is; Mother doesn't even bat an eye.
When Father steps out of the floo Mother helps him with his robe before we exit the small sitting room. When we walk to the front of the building there is another receptionist. This one has bright red hair though I'm sure it's been magically colored. She is Japanese after all. "Konichiwa, Malfoy-sama. Welcome to Japan. Is there anything that you need before you leave?"
"No."
The receptionist nods before she jots down a few things on a long piece of parchment. When she is finished she walks from behind her desk, giving a deep bow before my father. "Sayonara."
Father gives the young woman a soft nod of parting. "Sayonara."
When we exit the floo building we get in an exact double of our town car in London, though of course, our driver is different. As we drive around I absently notice the people and the buildings though I am nearly too distracted to remember any details. The ride isn't that long though when we get to the country side it does get a little bumpy.
When we arrive at the Malfoy estate I suck in a breath--it is beautiful. Though I've been to this particular estate on a number of occasions, never in the winter time and it is very pleasant to see the building glowing under the white snow. Our driver lets us out the car and as we walk to the entrance my body is more tense than it has ever been.
"Konichiwa, Malfoy-sama. Welcome to Japan."
"Konichiwa Aido-san, is everything ready?"
"Yes, Master Malfoy." The middle aged Japanese man turns as he leads us into the house. It always amazed me how the traditional houses looked as though they were floating. Father tells me it's because the floor is elevated, built on bamboo and planks of cypress and cedar. It's a very nice element and truthfully it was what I like about the houses the most. Sometimes I imagine that I am flying though Father rarely lets me use my broom when we are in Japan.
Aido leads us each to our own rooms were we are to change for lunch. A female attendant helps me put on a white and tan male kimono. Whenever we stay in Spain we usually wear more muggle clothing but the kimono reminds me of our robes and for that I am grateful. The woman smiles at me before she brushes my hair up into a high ponytail. When that is finished she leads me to the dining room were lunch will be served. Father is already there though Aunt Bella and Mother are not. It always takes longer for the women to put on their kimonos; they are much more complicated.
Father gives me a nod of greeting as I sit down on my knees so that I am level with the stout table. Servants are bustling left and right as they bring in trays full of food. They bring the miso and the rice first. Father asks me if I want udon with my soup and I say yes, so the servants bring some of that too. Once that is finished Mother and Aunt Bella arrive seconds after each other.
I am always surprised at the ease in which they sit down with the confining folds of the kimono but they manage it in the grateful flow of their limbs that they always move with. Finally the sashimi is brought, which had to be last of course since the raw fish is only edible if it's fresh. Aido comes and sits at the table with us before we all clap our hands once. "Itadakimasu," we all say, which is to thank the people who prepared the food. If they were house elves we wouldn't have to say anything. But, alas, they are not.
In unison we all pick up our chop sticks and dig in. I eat a little rice first though my parents and Aunt Bella like to mix theirs with the sashimi. I prefer to eat my fish with my miso. So after a few more bites of rice with some stewed seaweed, I place my chop sticks down before picking up my bowl of soup. I am glad that the servants have put the udon noodles in my miso so I don't have to worry about it.
I take a sip of the hot liquid and it goes down my throat in a delicious glide of warmth. I decide to hold my bowl with one hand while I use my other to eat sashimi and some of the tofu and noodles that are sitting in the soup. This time I take a large gulp of my soup so that the food will mix perfectly in my mouth. It does, and I can't help but to smile as I quickly finish of my sashimi and miso.
"Eat some of your vegetables, dear," Mother says to me as to my rice again.
The best way to eat the pickled vegetables is with my rice so I delicately mix the two with my chop sticks. By the time I finish off my rice I am full. "Gochiso sama deshita," I say with a light groan. Father chuckles at me and Mother giggles.
"That was quite the feast for our little Draco, wasn't it?" Aunt Bella asks. Gochiso sama deshita literally means it was quite a feast, though it is actually used to express thanks for the meal.
Father turns his head slightly to Aunt Bella as he raises an eyebrow. "A feast it may be but tonight he will eat twice as much. He'll be worn out, and hungry. He'll need all the strength he can get."
I swallow a large gulp of air as a tense silence invades the room. After a few seconds of the tension Mother throws me a smile before picking up the sake, pouring me a glass of the rice liquor. "Here you go, Draco dear. Have a little sake, you'll need it."
I nod my head, picking up my cup to drink the liquid though I barely taste it as my family continues to chat. It is all a slight buzzing in my brain that I can't seem to focus on. As I feel myself slumping to the table I wonder if something in my food was laced. Perhaps the sake? But these last few thoughts are fleeting as the world around me goes black.
