“Hermione, let me carry you down the stairs,” Lucius pleaded as he followed her into the bowels of Hogwarts.
“Lucius Abraxas Malfoy, I am more than capable of walking on my own. I don’t need your babying.”
“Help me!” Lucius pleaded.
“I’m enjoying her bossing you about,” Mr. Malfoy said. “Nothing could afford me greater pleasure than seeing you so Lion-pecked.”
“You’re mean,” Lucius pouted, crossing his arms.
“You are a pathetic, whiny little sap,” Mr. Malfoy said, relaxing his body posture. “Oh, sorry. I thought we were saying things about the other that were obvious.”
“Hermione, you could fall,” Lucius pouted, trying to take her hand.
“Don’t paw me! You will make me trip.”
“I should carry you!”
“If I hear you talk about carrying me just one more time, I will SCREAM!”
“Hermione, darling,” Lucius said, stomping his foot as he trailed her like a lost niffler. “Hermione.”
“LUCIUS, darling,” Hermione mocked, fake sniffing. “Lucius.”
“HERMIONE!” Big grey eyes watched her every step.
“BEAVER GIRL! BEAVER GIRL!” a loud screech sounded from overhead.
“PEEVES! If you do anything to me, I will make sure that they do not piece together all your ectoplasm until Hogwarts’ two thousandth birthday!”
Peeves whooshed away cursing her and threatening to flood the loos.
“Hermione!”
“LUCIUS, shut up!”
Lucius choked back a sob as Hermione knocked on Severus’ door.
“It is the Christmas Holiday! Whatever you little dunderheads want, I am no longer being paid at this time to give a damn.”
“You’re being quite the Grinch, Severus,” Hermione called.
BAM!
“Hermione, I told you that your prenatal potions wouldn’t be ready until 1:00!” Severus said, standing in the doorway taking up the whole space and crossing his arms.
Hermione looked at her watch. The second hand was ticking on twelve fifty-nine and forty five seconds.
“Hermione,” Lucius said, taking her hand.
“I am talking to Severus. You mind your manners, Lucius,” Hermione said.
Lucius pouted and tugged on her hand.
“Your potions are ready,” Severus said, stepping aside the moment the loud bell began to toll noon. “I have prepared a week’s supply for you.”
“I have some other things to discuss with you as well,” Hermione said, directing Lucius to a stool in the back of the room and pushing him down. “You sit here while I talk to Severus.”
“But,” Lucius began.
“Are you talking back to me?” Hermione asked, giving him a stern look when he tried to stand up.
“No.”
“Good,” Hermione said, and she kissed his forehead and petted his hair. “It won’t take long. We’ll have tea in Diagon Alley when I have finished talking with Severus.”
“Okay,” Lucius said. “You must be careful. So many things here are dangerous to babies.”
“I know,” Hermione said, and she kissed his forehead again.
Lucius watched her as she walked to the front of the classroom.
“What were you and Lucius doing last night?” Hermione asked, and she plopped down in Severus comfortable black leather chair.
“We tested out some old spells,” Severus said, and he looked right down into his friend’s eyes. “I was searching for a cure to his current predicament.”
“Whom did you test the spells on?”
“Now, Hermione, in your condition…”
“Severus Snape,” Hermione said with a smile, “You don’t want to go down that road.”
“I’m not afraid of you.”
“You will be.”
Severus’ sneer didn’t quite show in his eyes as he moved to put the whole of his desk between Hermione and himself.
“I don’t want either of Lucius’ personalities eliminated,” Hermione said. “I can’t live if I don’t have both.”
Severus looked down his nose at her.
“I know that you don’t expect me to live with him the rest of my life. He is like a child who has just discovered his genitalia.”
Severus looked over at Lucius who was staring at them.
“You make a disturbing point.”
“And I need someone who is sweeter than his other personality.”
“So, you want to what? Fix his royal schizoid-ness?”
“I want the personalities melted together and made whole. I’ve been speaking with Lady Nimue about it, and she seems to hint at being able to make it happen.”
“I don’t doubt the woman could do so, but there will be a price for whatever aid you accept from her,” Severus said.
“Well, I have something that will make her very happy,” Hermione said. “I am sure that she will want to do all in her power to help her many times great-grandson as she will not want to the past to repeat itself within the family. I was also wanting to ask a favor of you.”
“What?” Severus asked as he measured potion and put it in vials.
“I was wondering if you would be my first baby’s godfather,” Hermione said.
Severus dropped one of the unbreakable vials. It rolled around on the floor. He stooped and picked it up.
“You want me to be your little girl’s godfather?”
“Yes, you are dear to Lucius and me,” Hermione said, stepping closer to the wide-eyed man and wrapping her arms around him.
“I would love to,” Severus said, placing a hand on her back, “if that is the wish of both of you.”
SCRATCH!
“Do you mind?” Lucius said as his stool fell over backwards. “She is my wife. Keep your dirty old hands off her.”
“Lucius Malfoy,” Hermione said, rounding on him. “Sit down.”
“He is practically fondling you!”
“SIT DOWN!”
Lucius glared at her, “You’re my wife.”
“Yes, and Severus is to be the godfather of our child,” Hermione said, glaring at Lucius as she put the vials of potion in her pockets.
“I need a hug!” Lucius said, holding his arms out.
Hermione looked at him as he stood there with his bottom lip shoved out looking like a little boy denied a ice cream cone from Fortesque’s Ice Cream Parlor on a hot summer day after his mother dragged him to all the horrible clothing stores and refused to let him go into Quidditch shop. She smiled at him when he stomped his foot and moved to him drawing him down by his neck and kissing his cheek.
“You will be a good boy. We are going to see Lady Nimue soon.”
“Do we have to?” Lucius asked, tilting her head up to kiss her.
“We do.”
“Severus, Lucius and I will take our leave now. We hope to see you soon.”
Severus nodded as he stirred a cauldron.
“Hold on tight, Lucius,” Hermione said, wrapping her arms around Lucius and twisting a silver bracelet around on her wrist.
They were whisked away instantly.
Hermione pulled away from Lucius as they landed next to the lake.
“I hate portkeys,” Hermione moaned, holding her stomach.
Lucius moved to her quickly even as water swirled about on the lake.
“Well, it is about time the two of you came to visit me,” the Lady of the Lake said as she sat down gracefully in a chair composed of water.
“Yes, Lady,” Hermione said with a curtsy. “I come with wonderful news.”
“Depends on what you call wonderful.”
“You are to have a granddaughter again,” Hermione said, placing a hand on her stomach.
“Don’t toy with me.”
“I am not joking,” Hermione said, and she smiled widely.
The Lady of the Lake moved swiftly from the lake and wrapped her arms around Lucius and Hermione tightly as tears trickled down her cheeks.
“A granddaughter?”
“Yes, Lady.”
Lady Nimue pulled back, and she cupped the cheek of each of them.
“Draco, please come out,” she said.
Draco came out from behind the tree.
“Father,” he greeted, bowing his head.
“What are you doing here?” Lucius said, walking forward and wrapping his arms around his firstborn.
“Grandmother Nimue had me brought here to seek my opinion on something.”
“Now that it is settled,” Lady Nimue said, smiling.
“All is settled.”
“Take my hand, my dear Lucius,” she said, holding her arms out to him.
“No tricks, old woman.”
“None,” Lady Nimue said, as she stepped up to him and engulfed him in her arms.
Bright silver light shone from both as the Lady drew him out over the water.
Hermione covered her eyes as she watched the Lady and Lucius tremble and quake as the light grew more intense.
Draco darted behind a tree to hide from the light.
Very slowly the light began to fade to the point where Hermione could look at it. When she did, she saw a body lying on the shore of the lake with robes on that looked too big for him. Hermione crept toward the form that lay there.
The Lady of the Lake hovered above the lake with her magic winking and blinking.
“My love to you. I only wish it was more,” she said, and she vanished in a shower of thousands of silver sparkles that flew out and away through the woods like shooting stars.
Hermione touched her hand to the unmoving form.
The man shivered and pulled away before standing.
“Hermione,” Lucius said, looking down at her.
Hermione gaped as she looked up at the young face and the shorter blond hair.
“Lucius, is that you?” Hermione asked standing up and staring at him.
“No, it’s bloody Peeves.”
Hermione threw her arms around him. She stroked his young face and looked into his eyes.
“How old are you?”
“I’m eighteen. You know that!”
“Do you know anything about the past several months?”
“Yes, we were wed,” Lucius said with a blush. “And you are pregnant.”
“I am.”
She kissed him.
