Severus followed the nurse quickly, determined to make it to his wife’s side as soon as possible. She swung open the door, and he followed.

He froze briefly as he entered. Hermione lay on the table, a modicum of color returning to her face and lips- not much, though- possibly owing to the fact she was hooked up to some bottle of fluid. Tubes seemed to be stuck in her randomly, and her arms were strapped down on either side. A large blue drape covered her, like a curtain, to shield her from seeing the operation.

He sat by her side and tenderly stroked her hand. It was cool to the touch, and dry. An acrid, strange burning smell drifted towards him, and he paled as he realized that they were beginning to cut her. “Severus?” she whispered distantly, and groped weakly for his hand.

“I’m here, love, shhh....” he ran one finger from her temple down to her chin, and smiled. He was worried sick, but she didn’t need to know that now. He leaned in and kissed her lips, cold and parched. She responded faintly, a hint of a smile playing at her lips.

The operation progressed rapidly. After what seemed like a minute, the doctors hurriedly passed one baby, then another, to waiting nurses. As the doctors sewed up Hermione’s incision, the pediatricians performed perfunctory tests on the babies. Hermione and Severus had precious little time to examine the babies before they were whisked away for observation in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

After a few hours, when the hallucinatory effects of the demerol and morphine had worn off, Hermione awoke in a darkened hospital room. She looked around, alarmed.

“Severus? Severus?” she scanned the shadows for signs of him, becoming increasingly distressed.

“I’m right here, love.” his voice sounded from the darkness beside her bed. He sounded groggy, as if he’d been sleeping.

“How are the babies?”

“Fine. They want to keep them for observation...” he looked around shiftily, “but Albus is going to send a healer for you three tommorrow, and we’ll go back straightaway. The sooner we leave this... er... place, the better. Anyway, they were five pounds, two ounces each, a boy and a girl. Would you like to meet them?”

“Yes! Please, can you get them now?” A strong ache began to echo around her lower midsection, and she winced. “And can you ask the nurse for some painkillers?” He left the room, hastily returning with a harried looking nurse. She dispensed two small blue pills to Hermione, and returned shortly, another nurse in tow. They pushed two bassinets.

Severus lifted a small, pink-blanketed bundle to Hermione. “Ophelia- is that still all right with you?” She smiled as he lifted the blue bundle. “And him, he’s yours to name.”

“Anything?” she inquired, trying not to look like she was hiding something.

“Anything,” he agreed, too enamored with the tiny, sleeping babies cuddled on the bed.

“Sirius.”
