Chapter 22- Hermione, Severus, and the Baby Makes Three

Hermione grumbled as she tried to fix her pillows but was unsuccessful. “Damnit. Maybe I should just stand up and fix it,”

“Miss Hermione! Oh no no. Yous needs to be in bed,” Dottie, Hermione’s house elf cried just as Hermione climbed out of bed.

“I was just going to fix my pillows Dottie. I only would have been on my feet a few seconds,” Hermione said as the elf out her back in bed and fluffed her pillows.

Dottie just shook her head. “Master Severus gave me strict orders. You aren’t to gets out of bed,”

Hermione rolled her eyes and flopped back against the pillows. “I don’t think Severus would have been upset if I stood up long enough to fix my pillows,”

“Don’t bet on that Hermione,” Narcissa giggled as she entered the room.

“Come on, my husband can’t be that bad,” Hermione replied.

Narcissa sat on the bed beside her while Dottie popped out. “Are you kidding? Severus has told every house elf to keep you off your feet, using any mean necessary, including magic,”

Hermione just groaned as she covered her eyes with her hands. “Come on, just because I’m on bed rest doesn’t mean I have to stay in bed. I mean. I’m only seven months pregnant,”

Narcissa couldn’t help but laugh at hearing Hermione whine like a spoiled child. “Actually honey, that’s exactly what it means,”

“I just want out of the bed. I would love to sit outside and get some fresh air. From the open windows it feels so comfortable,’ Hermione said.

“Tell you what; Christine is coming to check on you in an hour. If she agrees, me and the house elves will move you outside to the gardens for a while. Sound like a deal?” Narcissa suggested.

Severus sighed as he and Lucius re-entered the house. All day he had been in meetings to tie up the last minute legal matters with his and Hermione’s potion. Lucius had waited till Severus was finished before coming home himself.

“All I want is a hot shower and curl up with Hermione,” Severus said.

“I’m sure you also want to find out what Christine said,” Lucius said.

“That too," Severus chuckled as he headed upstairs.

“Um…Master Severus, the miss isn’t there,” Dottie spoke up.

“What! Where is she?” Severus demanded.

“Oh calm down Severus. Hello dear, Helena has missed her daddy,” Narcissa smiled as she handed their daughter to Lucius. “As for your wife, she was going a little stir crazy. Christine agreed that fresh air would be good for her. Me, Dottie, Glimmer and Tippy moved Hermione into the gardens. She never got on her feet,”

Severus stood and just watched his wife. She sat on a chaise lounge, a light blanket draped over her from the waist down. The setting September sun washing over her as she read a book. He smiled as Hermione absentmindedly rubbed her stomach.

“You look content,” He teased as he approached her.

“I am thank you very much. Christine said sitting outside would be good for me,” She replied as she looked up at him.

Severus sat beside her and kissed her gently. “What did the tests show?”

Hermione closed her book and sighed. “I have a condition known as stalisious. My mother had it too,”

“What is it? It’s obvious you don’t seem surprised about this news,” He said.

“Stalisious is a blood infection. The strange thing is, it’s not common for muggles but very common for witches. The infection starts out almost like toxemia, which is why I nearly passed out in Buenos Aries. Later it leaves the woman tired constantly,” She explained.

“Like you were at the end of our tour? You were so tired,” He asked.

“Exactly. With withes, this condition can be fatal if not treated early enough. There is a 50/50 chance that the witch or child can die. There is a slim chance of both dying. The bright side is that this condition only happens with a witch’s first pregnancy. In muggle women who get it, they are unable to have children, like my mother,” She answered.

Severus was floored. He still couldn’t get past the fact that he could lose his wife, his child, or both. That idea scared the living hell out of him. He looked down when he felt Hermione’s hand on his arm.

“Severus, Christine says they caught my condition early. Plus the fact that I’m a MUGGLE-BORN witch gives me a better chance. You’re not going to lose me or the baby. You’ll see,’ Hermione said.

“I love you Hermione,” Severus whispered as he pulled her into his arms.

September passed into October. The further along she got, the more tired she became. She started experiencing more Braxton-hicks contractions and Christine almost admitted her to St. Mungo’s. The only thing preventing that was the fact that Narcissa was once a Medi-Witch on the labor and delivery ward at St. Mungo’s.

Hermione spent most of her time curled up in bed either sleeping or reading. It was obvious she was beginning to feel the strain of pregnancy. All Severus, Lucius, and Narcissa could do was help make Hermione as comfortable as possible. It was a cold day in November when it happened. Hermione was two weeks from her due date when she went into labor in the early morning hours of November 6th.

“Ooohhh! Oh no. Severus…ugh….Severus wake up,” Hermione moaned.

“Hermione? What’s wrong honey?” Severus asked, coming wide awake at the sound of her voice.

“Get Narcissa. It’s time,” She gritted.

Severus didn’t hesitate. He threw on his boxers and rushed from their room. He burst into Lucius and Narcissa’s room, waking them up instantly.

“Severus what the hell’s the matter with you?” Lucius grumbled.

“Hermione’s in labor,” Severus stated.

“Lucius, go get Christine. Tippy!” Narcissa said. The elf appeared a second later. “Tippy, I need you to stay with Helena. First go get Dottie and help me with Hermione,”

“Yes Mistress,” Tippy nodded before popping out.

Lucius dressed while Narcissa and Severus hurried back to Hermione. They found Dottie dabbing Hermione’s forehead with a cool cloth. Dottie looked up as they neared the bed. “I is already changing the sheets and Miss Hermione’s gown,”

“Excellent Dottie. Severus, sit next to her and just hold her hand. Hermione, I’m going to see how far you’ve dialated,’ Narcissa replied gently.

Hermione nodded as she leaned into Severus’ arms. “Severus,”

“Sshh love. I’m right here honey,” He whispered stroking her back.

“You’re dialated to 4. It’s going to be a while sweetie,” Narcissa reported.

It was four hours before Christine was able to make it to Malfoy Manor. She had been delivering another baby and had to wait for a colleague to relieve her. She came in as Hermione was biting down another contraction.

“How’s she doing Narcissa?” Christine whispered as she pulled Narcissa aside.

“She’s only dilated to 5 and I had to break her water about 2 hours ago. She’s getting tired and I don’t think she can do this,” Narcissa sighed.

Christine nodded sadly. “It’s the stalisious. We need to keep her strength up as much as possible,” Narcissa understood.

Hermione moaned in pain, her eyes clenching through the contraction. Severus simply held her hand and dabbed at her forehead with a wash cloth. He felt helpless, but vowed not to leave her side till this was done.

“Severus…I can’t do…ooohhh…this. I’m so tired,” Hermione cried sagging into his arms.

“Sshh. You can do this Hermione. I know it hurts and you’re tired but you have to keep going. Think of our child Hermione. Don’t give up,” Severus pleaded.

“I…I…can’t. Ooohhh! God! Aahh!” She screamed.

Before Severus could do anything, Christine grabbed him by the arm and pulled him aside. “Severus listen to me. There is a 50/50 chance Hermione will not pull through this,”

“No! Hermione won’t die!” He hissed.

For your sake I hope you’re right. Listen I’m going to need a few potions if there is any chance of saving your wife,” Christine stated.

****************************************************************************************************************

Severus entered his stores at Hogwarts. He was lucky that Rhonda had replaced his stores as needed, there wasn’t time to rebrew any of the ones he needed. He found the potions Christine need and turned to leave, only to meet the tip of Rhonda’s wand.

“Who the hell are you?” Rhonda demanded.

“Ms. Hitt it’s Severus,” Severus replied.

“Oh god! I’m so sorry,’ She gasped.

“It’s alright. I came to get some potions for Hermione. She’s in labor and not doing so good. I need to get back to her,” He explained.

“Of course. If you need anything at all you know where to reach me,” She said. Severus nodded then left.

“Is everything alright love?” Sirius questioned as he stepped up behind Rhonda in a bathrobe.

“It’s Hermione, she’s in labor. Judging by the potions Severus had, she’s got stalisious,” Rhonda said sadly.

****************************************************************************************************************

Through the day and night Hermione endured labor. Despite the added potions Severus brought, Hermione’s condition was not improving. Finally after twenty-two hours in hard labor, she was in the home stretch, but her vitals were dropping.

“Hermione. Hermione, stay with me now,” Christine said as she and Narcissa got ready to finish delivering the baby.

“Sweetie I can see the head. He or she has a head of dark hair. Push Hermione. You’re almost there,” Narcissa coached.

“I…I can’t. I’m so tired. I can’t…aahh! I can’t do this!” Hermione sobbed.

Severus quickly moved behind her, situating her between his legs and supporting her back with his chest. “You can do this baby. Push sweetheart. Lean against me and push,”

Hermione clutched Severus’ hand and pushed, a scream ripping from her lungs. Christine, Severus and Narcissa kept encouraging Hermione. A few seconds later Severus heard Christine say she had the baby’s head. A minute later Narcissa held the kicking and screaming child.

“It’s a boy,” Narcissa beamed.

“A boy. Hermione did you hear that? Hermione?” Severus asked.

“Damnit she crashing,” Christine cursed.
