Chapter 23
Chapter 23
Raven had called in sick at work for the two days following Severus’ hasty departure. She spent both days lying in bed. Her body ached. Her head ached. Her heart ached. She felt as though she were on her way to death.
She reflected on this feeling as she organized the cookbook section to make way for a new hot seller. It had been close to three weeks since she had seen Severus. She thought back to how just a few short weeks ago she had been eagerly anticipating all the extra time that the two of them would have together as Severus would be on break from work.
A rueful smile crossed Raven’s face, thinking of the future that wasn’t to be. She stepped to the side to arrange more of the books on the shelf. She bumped into a person.
“Oh, I’m sorry, sir” She said to an elderly man that she had not even been aware had been next to her.
“Don’t worry about it my love.” The man said.
Raven’s eyes grew large and round, her gaze looking at the books in her hands.
“What?” She hissed at the man.
Turning she looked at him. The man’s face was a virtual road map of wrinkles. The gent sported a neatly clipped whitish gray beard and short clipped matching hair. Glancing quickly, Raven saw that he wore a tweed type jacket over a white shirt and some firmly pressed tan trousers.
The man smiled at her.
Raven wrinkled her lip at him. It was actually her snarl that she had unconsciously picked up from Severus.
“Oh my, a pretty young thing like you certainly isn’t interested in an old bloke like me are you?” The old man countered at her disgusted snarl. His eyes sparkled, belying his years.
Raven looked at the man, his dark eyes flashing at her.
“ Severus.” She whispered at him. She reached out to pull him into a hug.
He grasped her wrists and pulled her hands down to her sides at the same time saying, “Not here my love. Not here.”
He turned and pretended to be looking at the books on the shelf as a customer came down the isle towards them. After the woman had passed and turned onto another isle, Severus spoke.
“ I thought this was a good disguise. “How did you know it was me? he asked
“ I didn’t know it was you. I was just guessing.” Raven said softly to him, turning to look at him.
His eyes grew large but looking at her he could see by her grin that she was just teasing him.
“ Oh so it’s not the young tight t-shirted men I have to worry about then, it’s the pensioners in the bookshop that I should fear?” He countered arching his eyebrow at her.
He had missed their banter. As Severus looked at Raven in her big baggy shirt draped over her voluminous skirt, he felt pain across his chest and he realized that he missed Raven on so many levels that he could scarcely begin to even fathom them.
“I will meet with you later tonight. It is Tuesday is it not?” He queried.
Raven gave a quick nod, her eyes large, staring at him. She felt a stab of pain shoot into her as she wondered how his life had changed if he wasn’t even sure of the week.
“You’ll be home at about 6pm then?” Severus continued, unaware of the pain that had passed through Raven.
Raven again gave a quick nod of her head.
“Yes, this is fine then.” Severus said as he plucked a book from the shelf before him and headed off to the front of the store and to the cash register.
Raven stood and watched as Severus made his way to the front of the store, complete in using the walk of an older man, he paid for the book and left the shop.
Raven spent the rest of the day being a nervous wreck. She knew that some of the others in the shop that she worked with noticed that she was behaving oddly. Noticing this of them, she went back and dumped the grounds from her early morning coffee cup, filling it with water, she then proceeded to pretend to be drinking too much coffee as a cover for her nervousness for the day. It seemed to have worked as one of the older ladies remarked that Raven wasn’t going to be able to sleep at all because of all the coffee she had drank. Raven smiled at the woman and agreed with her.
Raven got off of the bus the few blocks from her house and not caring what she looked like she began to run towards her house. But suddenly, she thought better of doing that. She knew that Severus would want her to behave in a natural fashion. She slowed to a walk but kept a large bounce to her step so to the casual observer, perhaps it would just seem that she was hi-strung or overly happy or something like that. She congratulated herself on her ingenuity.
Raven reached her house in short order. Twisting the key in the lock she rushed into the room and quickly closed the heavy wooden door behind herself.
