Chapter 22

Chapter 22

Draco walked up the winding stairs calmly, wand at his side. Ron was watching over Harry and it was time to have a little talk with his father. He hated secrets. It just made him edgy and he worked very hard to figure them out when he could be saved a lot of time and frustration with the truth.

He could hear voices, Lupin and Albus apparently and grinned a bit to himself. He was polite to the werewolf, but he still didn’t like him. He was about to give the wolf a taste of what he was capable of. He closed his eyes and let his power spike out of him, as he’d seen Harry do when upset. Except he had a conscious control over it and he used it to slam open the door.

Remus spun around in shock and he grinned as he sauntered in. Albus looked amused, “Draco.”

Bowing a little, “Father.”

Lupin looked just a tad irritated at the intrusion, “Can this not wait, Albus?”

The Headmaster nodded, “Draco, could we have this discussion later?”

Frowning to himself, “It is rather important-...”

“Listen to the Headmaster, young man.” Draco’s eyes flickered in anger, grinding his teeth just a bit as the werewolf had the audacity to turn his back to him. Obviously, the mutt didn’t understand who he was dealing with. Or maybe that was the problem. He was familiar a bit with the stories of Hogwarts back then and obviously Lupin mistook him for someone else.

“I am no mere Lucius Malfoy.” Draco was in a fit to end all fits and this time he was going to be heard. He glared at the back of Lupin’s head and decided enough was enough. His magicks expanded around him as his anger grew. He was not a five year old. And even if he were he’d been handling the harsher facts of life for longer than that. He would be heard. He didn’t move, not an inch, his hands fisted at his side. Like a snake the magic swirled around him, a current of white magic that rippled and curved, flinging the rug to one side. A portrait complained loudly, it’s owner stilling before running away, screaming. Like a toddler it kicked at the chairs, only it was a lot stronger than a mere toddler and sent both hurling to the side.

Fawkes complained loudly from her perch. Both Remus and Albus jumped and stared at Draco who was close to losing complete control, “I...will...be.. heard.”

Lupin shivered in fright while Albus moved and sat on the corner of his desk. Harry and Draco, two of his most powerful pupils and both with tempers to match. But while Harry’s would spike at a moment’s notice, Draco’s was a slow burn. Which unfortunately meant it would last longer, “Yes, Draco?”

The magicks pulled back and swirled around him, placated slightly now that he was allowed to speak, “I am not a mere child, father. I have a right to know the truth. Harry, has a right to know the truth. Sirius Black is loose and a danger to Harry and you’ve failed to mention so. And while you will give me a speech that you are trying to protect me, you are only endangering and hurting me by keeping me ignorant. Because whether you approve or not either you will give me the answers, or they will find me.”

Albus felt himself sag. It was true. The past seemed to hunt these poor children down. And Draco had a right to be angry. In fact it was he that insisted Draco make himself heard if he was being ignored. A rather inventive method if he said so himself. Nodding with resignation, “Alright, Draco. I will tell you both in the morning.”

Draco nodded a little, blinking as his magicks disappeared back inside of him. He sighed a little, glancing at Lupin who was terrified of him, “May I speak to you alone, please?”

Albus inclined his head and Remus took the hint, practically running from the room, “Yes, Draco?”

Taking out his wand, he flicked it with a mumble and Albus looked around in surprise. The portraits,
Fawkes, all still and quiet. He looked to his son questioningly, “I didn’t want anyone to hear this.” He was shocked. Completely and utterly. This was advanced ritual work even beyond the university level. Breathing slowly, “Two issues, actually. The first is a future argument.” Albus nodded, “I can handle the truth, Albus. I can handle the world. I’ve been dealing with it since I was six and trying to shelter me is only making my life harder.”

Shaking his head, “Draco-...”

“Do you think I’ve never seen a dark mark or a Death eater meeting before? No. Do you think Lucius could hide it from me? I’ve known of Death eaters since I was four and a...a relative was completely honest with me when I was six. They taught me occulemency so I wouldn’t give away their secret and I never have...I won’t betray them and I won’t betray you.” Draco looked away for a moment, “Father, I don’t belong here.” Albus frowned at him but Draco just shook his head and sagged, “Have you ever felt like you didn’t belong in the world? Like something was wrong but you couldn’t grasp why or how?”

Nodding, “Once in a great while.”

“I feel it every day.” Draco tossed his wand away and grabbed his hair, pulling, “I don’t belong in this world. I’m too smart. I’ve too much power. I wasn’t meant to get my powers early but I was meant for this year... it’s like Narcissa gave birth to me two years late. Something happened, a mistake or an accident...I, I should be a third year...but I shouldn’t be eleven...I was supposed to give Granger and Potter and Weasley hell so I did it. Not because of Lucius but just because. I went through the motions of it but...they’re my friends now and I can’t and it’s all wrong again! I’m happy and it’s wrong-have you ever had a moment of perfect clarity? I have. It was my first memory. The Parkinsons brought Pansy to me for the first time. She turned four and I was two. And you know what she said? She exclaimed Where Were You?.” Draco sank to the floor, “That’s when I knew something was wrong...and it’s been wrong ever since.”

Moving and kneeling down in front of the child, “Draco...”

Chuckling, “The sad fact is...I wouldn’t change a moment of it. All my years of uncertainty and blind following are gone and...this is my time now...what happens now is the world of my choosing. I’ve never fit...but I’m going to make it fit me.”

“How?”

Draco frowned to himself before looking up with a small smile, “With you. I know you’ll protect me all
you’re able. You’ve given me a chance to be myself and I won’t let you down.”

Shaking his head, “You could never let me down, Draco.”

Chuckling softly, “You say that now. Wait till I mess something up.”

“Hmm...but you’ll be forgiven and I’ll just have my pride for you.”

He grinned, letting Albus pull him out of his dour mood and curled up on his side on the floor, head propped up on his hand, “Wanna play chess?”

Nodding, “Yes, Draco, I think I could use a good game right about now.”
