Twenty-one
The next day, Severus convinced Hermione to take a portkey away from that horrible park, although he wouldn’t say where. She went along, curious as to what her husband had planned. They arrived in the middle of flashing lights, massive skyscrapers, and taxis honking.
“New York! Bloody brilliant! I’ve always wanted to see this place!” She was thrilled. Since they only had a day, they were pressed for time. Hermione had never known that hidden behind muggle Times Square there was a wizard version, equally as sparkly and ostentatious. They spent loads of money in the flagship Gladrags Wizard Wear.
Before they headed downtown, they stopped for lunch in a southern barbeque restaurant called Virgil’s. It was really American, very muggle, and quite delicious. Afterwards, they hopped on the N/R subway at 42nd street and got off at Prince Street. Hermione dragged Severus around, shopping like mad to prepare for the new babies. She purchased some lovely baby announcements at ’s P’s Paperie- and for the first time they discussed the naming of their children. Hermione already had one name in mind, but she was hoping to keep it to herself until the babies arrived.
“Maybe we should each name one- that sounds fair,” she said innocently, trying to hide the fact that she had her heart firmly set on one name.
“If one is a girl,” he said, “I’d like to name her Ophelia. I’ve always been fond of that name.”
“That’s lovely, I’ll try to think of a boy’s name. Maybe Harry.” she deliberately tried to irk him- perhaps that would make him less annoyed when he heard her real suggestion. His brow furrowed, and thankfully he dropped the subject.
They spent the rest of the day traipsing about haughty boutiques, each seeming to carry no more than five items. Finally, she relented late in the afternoon. “Severus? Do you mind if we head back to the portkey soon? I feel very tired...” She trailed off as he looked at some lovely black button down muggle shirts. Suddenly, he felt her hand weakly grip his forearm. “Sev-...”
Hermione didn’t finish. She sank slowly to the floor. Severus watched in horror as a large pool of blood appeared at her feet. She looked up languorously at him, her lips pale, her face ashen. She began to drift into unconciousness.
Severus panicked as he realized that the nearest portkey was miles away, on the Upper West Side. A nervous saleslady walked over, and then ran to call an ambulance. The thought terrified him, Hermione in a muggle hospital, but he really had no other options.
The ambulance came swiftly, and transported her to St. Vincent’s hospital. The doctor who examined her looked grim. “She’s lost a lot of blood, and her membranes have ruptured. We’ll have to take the babies now, or we could lose all three of them.”
“How can she? She’s unconscious.” He looked at the doctor warily, frozen in abject terror at the thought of what they might do to Hermione in this place.
“We’ll have to perform a Caesarean section, sir. It’s our only option.” Severus nodded. He had no idea what this “Caesarean section” thing was, but it sounded risky, like something you did to a piece of fruit. Understanding dawned on him, and he recoiled.
“An operation?” He’d read about those things, they sounded terrible.
“Yes, sir.” The doctor was looking at him as if he was mentally deficient. “If that’s sir sir, I have to go get ready. The nurses will call you when we’re ready, which will be shortly.”
Severus quietly paced the room after he’d changed into the scrubs they’d given him. He was terrified, a million questions raced through his mind. The door opened and a small, squat woman dressed in white walked in.
“I thought I’d come see you before the operation starts. I’m one of the nurses who will be assisting. I know you’re a wizard- I’m a squib. I can spot your kind a mile away.” Severus felt very relieved- she explained everything thoroughly, and went to check on Hermione. He felt a little better- he understood what was going to happen, even though he didn’t like it. And she would be okay, and that was what mattered.
The nurse stuck her head in the door. “They’re starting, come on or you’ll miss it!” she whispered, and he hurried off to follow her.
