"I think you should get this one, Draco. It's the color of Pansy's eyes." I lean over Harry's shoulder to look at the piece of jewelry he's pointing to. "I'm not sure what it is though, but it's pretty."
I smirk at Harry as he rubs the back of his head sheepishly. "I didn't know you were paying so much attention to Pansy."
Harry flushes red before letting out an irritated huff. "That's only because she's your fiance. Besides, Pansy isn't that bad...she's nice. I like her, but..."
I sigh, running my fingers through my hair. I want to pull Harry in my arms and kiss him right then and there on his cherry red lips but after the last incident Harry and I have kept our kisses exclusively to his or my suite. Indeed kissing at this moment would do nothing but get us on the front page of the Prophet as Harry and I are currently in a semi-crowded store in Hogsmeade.
"What color are my eyes?" I ask Harry as I stand behind him. My hands twitch as our robes brush each other but I steadfastly ignore the urge to hold Harry's slight frame within my arms.
"They're blue."
I frown at Harry as he continues to eye the jewelry case. "My eyes aren't blu--"
"Your eyes are grey, sometimes they seem silver, but when the light hits your eyes they turn blue. When you smile your eyes are always blue."
Harry turns to face me and I am deeply surprised by the expression on his face. Longbottom is the only person I know who blushes more than Harry, but at this moment Harry's face is as pale as the moon, no blush infusing his cheeks. His emerald green eyes burn as they meet my own and unintentionally I take a step backwards from his intense gaze.
"Draco," Harry breaths out, taking a step forward until him and I are almost flush, robes brushing against each other's again. Harry reaches up his hand to lightly touch my face and it is only at that moment that I realize that I am the one blushing. Harry smiles his usual innocent smile and I am horrified to realize that my blush is deepening. I chuckle nervously as I remove Harry's hand from my face, though I don't release his warm hand as I walk us back up to the counter. I suppose there's a first time for everything and I'd rather have my boy making me blush than anyone else.
"I would like to buy the wand case," I say to the store clerk when he turns his attention back to Harry and I. The store clerk grins as he has undoubtedly recognized me.
"Which ring would you like to go with it, Mister Malfoy? We have diamonds, sapphires, emeralds..."
"I would like the one that most closely resembles the wand case. Perhaps the diamond and sapphire."
The store clerk nods before quickly wrapping the wand case and the matching ring in a black velvet box. When we exit the store I suggest that we go to Hogshead for a bite to eat and Harry complies. "So, what exactly is that thing you just bought for Pansy?"
I place the velvet box on the table once Harry and I sit down and open it in front of his eyes. I smirk at him, "Well, this thing right here is a ring--"
"I know what a ring is!" I laugh at Harry and he pulls the wand case out of the box. "This is what I was talking about. What is this?"
"Ah," I say, taking the jewel encrusted case from Harry. "It's a wand case."
Harry frowns in confusion. "What?"
I pull out my wand before putting the slender piece of jewel encrusted glass over the ebony handle. The glass re-sizes itself to fit on my handle and due to magic it is nearly invisible, if only for a slight sparkle. However, the diamonds and sapphires gleam in the dull light and they appear to be encrusted in my wand handle.
"Wow, that's pretty! Pansy's really gonna like that."
"Indeed." Quickly I pull the wand case off of my handle before placing it back in the box.
"So, is the wand handle just for decoration or does it do something?"
"Well," I begin, taking a quick break from the conversation to order lunch for Harry and I. "The wand case is there for decoration, of course. They can be very expensive and thus are usually used in order to show ones wealth, however, they do have a more practical purpose. The ring which comes with the wand case is used to call the wand to it's owner. Very important as not everyone in the wizarding world can cast a wandless 'accio.' Imagine if you lost your wand in a duel? If you can't call it back to you then you are undoubtedly at a disadvantage."
Harry nods his head and I just smile at his eager behavior. As we eat our food I don't bother to tell him that if anyone is stupid enough to lose their wand in a duel then their death is probably swifter than any wandless 'accio.' When we both finish with our food I pay the bill though Harry does protest a bit. I smile at his Gryffindor behavior before taking his hand in mine, leading us out of Hogshead. When we exit Hogshead I stop dead in my tracks. Harry looks at me in confusion.
"Hello dear."
"Mother." Mother smiles her cold Malfoy smile and her blue eyes are like shards of ice as she stares at Harry and I. I tighten my hold around Harry's hand.
"You must be Mister Potter," Mother says smoothly, voice ringing like bells. Like Father, Mother's voice is a deadly weapon that lures people into a false since of security before, like the viper she strikes. Harry beams a smile at her before awkwardly giving her a short bow.
Mother laughs softly before placing her hand under Harry's chin, raising his bowed form straight again. Harry faces flushes red and I want to smack my Mother's hand away. "No need to be so formal, Mister Potter. After all, you are my son's friend." Harry brows furrow as my Mother smiles at him knowingly.
"What are you doing in Hogsmeade, Mother?" I ask, pulling Harry closer to my side, intentionally releasing Harry from my Mother's grip. Mother smiles at me indulgently, completely nonplussed at my possessive behavior.
"Well," Mother says, taking my arm in hers as she leads me away from Hogshead. I am still holding Harry's hand so he follows closely behind me.
Even though I am nervous about my Mother's presence I can't help but preen under all of the attention being thrown my way due to my Mother's regal presence. Again she smiles down at me and I suppose Mother has an idea of what's floating through my head. "I've missed you dearly. Can't Mother come and see you?"
"Indeed."
Mother smiles at me and though verbally I've agreed with her, Mother knows me well enough to know that at this moment I want to scowl at her. Mother always did like to have a little fun by taunting Father, taking it upon herself to play with his pets. Perhaps she's adopted this habit for me as well, or perhaps she truly wants Harry for herself. Either way I can't let Mother get her hands on Harry. Harry is mine, just mine.
"Wow, this place is nice," Harry says. His soft voice takes me out of my thoughts and idly I eye the room. However, any observations I make about the place are immediately expelled when my Father enters the richly furnished den.
"Hello, son."
My breath stops in my chest as my Mother releases my arm, walking to my Father's side. She replaces my arm with Father's before they both lean towards each other, giving each other a soft peck on the lips. Out of the corner of my eyes I can see Harry blush a fiery red and I suppose he's thinking about all the kisses that him and I have shared. When Mother turns her attention back to the both of us she is smiling brightly though Father face remains stoic.
"Well boys," Mother says. She points to a small table beside the fireplace. "Have a seat. I'll prepare you both a cuppa. I know you'll have to return to Hogwarts soon. I don't want to keep the both of you away from your studies."
I throw my parents a strained smile before leading Harry and I to the table. Father sits down across from us as Mother prepares the tea and the tension in the room mounts. "So Harry, have you ever been here before?" Harry shakes his head in the negative at my Father's question before he bites his bottom lip nervously. "When I was a boy your age this hotel was just a restaurant. However, the food was so good that witches and wizards spent enough time here that the place was converted into a hotel."
"Oh," Harry says, taking a sip of his tea that Mother has placed in front of him. She smiles before settling in a chair next to Father's.
"Like Draco, when I was a boy his age my Father gave me an allowance. Being the Slytherin that I was I decided to purchase this building and have it converted. It was one of my first investments." Harry nods his head, listening intently to my Father. I take a sip of my tea, trying to dispel some of my nervous tension. I have no idea why my Father is telling any of this to Harry.
"You know, businesses and buildings aren't the only investments you can make, dear," Mother says to Harry. "Sometimes people are the best investments of all."
Harry frowns in confusion at my Mother before scratching the back of his head. "I'm sorry, Mrs. Malfoy. I don't quite understand."
My Father chuckles before taking another sip of his tea. "As most pureblood heirs I had a marriage contract."
"So, Mrs. Malfoy..."
Again my Father chuckles. "No, it's not what you would think. I had a contract with Bellatrix Lestrange nee Black, Narcissa's older sister. I was a young boy, I had no particular liking towards women, so having Bellatrix as my wife was neither here nor there." Father stops his talking to place his cuppa down before reaching over the table to take my head in his hands. Harry stares at us wide-eyed as my Father moves my head, inspecting features almost identical to his own. "For more generations than I can name the Malfoy family has had blond hair. Indeed it is a Malfoy's inheritance, an icon throughout the wizarding world." Father stops his talking again as he runs his fingers through my platinum hair, before taking a few strands between thumb and forefinger. "You see, Mister Potter, there was no way that I could deny my heir his rightful inheritance. The Blacks are an old pureblood family so they understood as well as I did. The contract was made before Narcissa was ever born, but once the Blacks produced a blond-haired child they were quick enough to offer Narcissa instead of Bellatrix."
My Father release my face, picking up his cuppa for another sip. "Your looks are more in Bellatrix's range, Mister Potter."
Again Harry frowns in confusion. "Mr. Malfoy, I don't quite understand."
"Miss Parkinson, Draco's fiance, was not blessed with the hair that my family has been born with generation after generation. However, her Mother has blond hair. Miss Parkinson's strawberry blond is just a birth mishap of contrasting magics, however, any child born of her with my son shall have his rightful inheritance."
"Blond hair?" Harry asks, confusion clearly present in his voice.
"That's correct," says Father, finishing off his cuppa.
"However," Mother says, folding her hands delicately on the table. "Sometimes people are the best investments of all. So much so that sometimes, even traditions kept for thousands of years are worth breaking." Harry frowns again and my Mother just smiles at him, taking a few strands of his hair in her hand. "Sometimes an icon needs to be dismantled." Harry gasps as my Mother reaches her hands in his robe, pulling out the chain I had given him for his birthday. "Sometimes an icon needs to go down in flames, but like the phoenix, rise again to once more take it's place. Perhaps in a different form than previous, but more powerful than it has ever been."
"Er...are you saying that Pansy--"
"Mister Potter, what me and my husband are saying is that we would not be adverse to an ebony-haired grandchild."
"Mother!" I am out of my chair, back rod straight as I take Harry's hand in my own. "It is getting late, Harry and I need to return back to Hogwarts immediately. This trip was just to get gifts for the upcoming Yule Tides, however, if we do not return with godspeed then these infrequent trips to Hogsmeade for us first years might be revoked all together."
Mother smiles at me and Father just chuckles as I quickly exit the den, easily finding my way to the entrance of Father's hotel. I hold Harry's hand tightly in mine as I lead us back down the cobblestone path to Hogwarts. "Draco, wha--"
"Shh, it's OK, Harry. My parents always do that to my friends."
"Ah," Harry says, bringing his body closer to mine. I sigh, running a hand through my hair, glad that Harry has accepted the blatant lie. Quickly we enter Hogwarts castle and I lead us to my suite so I can deposit Pansy's Yule Tide gift.
"So, Draco, do you want to play exploding snap?"
I smile at Harry, settling across from him on the living room floor. However, before we can even begin one game there is a soft knock on my door. I sigh, giving Harry a smile of apology before I open my suite door.
"Hello, Draco."
"Uncle."
Uncle Sev looks over my head, and once he spots Harry he sighs, "Perhaps we should have this conversation in my quarters. I was not aware that you would have any company."
Harry glances up when he hears Severus' voice, flushing red when my Uncle words reach him. "Oh, that's alright," Harry says, quickly getting up from the floor. "I'll see you later, Draco. I'm gonna go put these gifts away in my suite. I don't want Blaise or Neville or somebody to catch me with there Yule Tide presents."
I smile in thanks at Harry as he exits my suite. He gives a nod of respect to Severus before walking down the dim corridor. Uncle Sev doesn't even wait for Harry to get out of site before he walks past me into my suite. "I assume you told your parents that Harry could not make it for Yule Tides?"
I nod my head, closing the suite door. "Yes."
"Did you get a response back from them?"
"No. However I did run into my parents today in Hogsmeade."
Severus sucks in a sharp breath. "The both of them?"
"Yes."
I can hear my Uncle sigh as he sits down on the sofa. "This morning your Father sent me an owl post. For some reason he sees the need to have me brew a ridiculously large amount of polyjuice potion." I suck in a large breath, my mind spinning with all kinds of possibilities about my parents and polyjuice. "I am not sure if the polyjuice is for just one person, or a series of people--"
"Harry."
"Pardon?"
"The polyjuice," I say, pacing back and forth in front of Severus. "It's for Harry. This afternoon, when my parents met up with me, Mother touched Harry's hair. I didn't understand why, but even a strand or two of Harry's hair can be stretched through a large batch of polyjuice potion."
"I see that your parents have given up on having Harry over for Yule Tides."
"Yes, but that doesn't mean that they're not going to polyjuice him. I don't wan--"
"It doesn't matter what you want."
"I don't want my parents touching Harry! Polyjuiced or not, it's still Harry. It's his body and I don't want them doing anything to him."
Uncle Sev sighs again before pulling me down on the couch beside him. "Truthfully, Draco, I don't think that the polyjuiced Harry is for your parents."
"I don't understand."
"The Malfoy estate in Okinawa is a old one, and it's purpose is usual one of two things. In the summer, it's a nice vacation home in Japan, however, in the winter..."
"What?" I ask Uncle Sev, slight alarm tinting my voice as I spot the expression on Uncle Sev's face. "What is it?"
"In the winter, the Okinawa estate is used to train a Malfoy."
"Train?"
"Sexual training, Draco." My mouth drops open and I stare at my Uncle wide-eyed. Uncle Sev sighs again. "Usually this training isn't conducted until the third year of Hogwarts, however, your parents have decided to begin your training early."
"Is it because of Harry?"
"As much as I detest the Potter boy, I believe that this event would proceed with or without your relationship with Potter. It is..." Pain grips my Uncle's face and my body is invaded with a most alien emotion: fear.
"What? Tell me!"
"Draco! I should not even speak this much with you. What I believe is only speculation. I would not wish to alarm you if my assumptions were false."
"What is it? Does it concern Harry? Dumbledore?" Uncle Sev shakes his head in the negative, fear grips my entire frame. "Voldemort?"
"Do not speak his name!"
"It's the Dark Lord, isn't it?"
A look passes across Severus' eyes before his face takes on a stoic expression. "Draco, just...be on your guard. I must depart, I have a staff meeting with Dumbledore."
Severus exits my suite quickly, leaving me alone in the dying light of the evening sun. All I can think about as I sit in the descending darkness is of Harry, polyjuice, and the Dark Lord.
