Chapter 21- Finishing The Tour

The tour was going wonderfully. Hermione and Severus were enjoying themselves, which really surprised them. They were expecting to be bored out of their minds. So far, after eight months they had been through Europe and Asia. Next stop; North and South America. Of course just after landing in Argentina, Hermione became ill.

“Will she be alright?” Severus demanded as the medi-wizard finished his exam.

“I assure you Senor Snape your wife is fine. Tell me Senortia Snape, when did you first start feeling ill?” Healer Ortiz asked.

“Um, about eight weeks ago," Hermione answered.

“Eight weeks! Hermione, you didn’t say anything until now? Why?” Severus exclaimed.

“I know and I’m sorry. I didn’t say anything because I knew you would overreact. Besides, it’s just stomach flu,’ Hermione sighed.

“Actually Senortia Snape, it’s not stomach flu,” Ortiz corrected.

“What? Then…then what is it?” She questioned nervously.

“You are ten weeks pregnant,” Ortiz explained.

Hermione and Severus froze. They were too busy looking at one another; they didn’t even notice the healer leaving the room. Slowly Severus dropped into a chair next to the bed. It was Hermione who broke the silence.

“I…I can’t believe I didn’t notice the signs,”

“What…um…what do you mean Hermione?”

“Think about it Severus. I’m tired all the time, nauseous, I’m hungry all the time, and my clothes are starting to get too tight. It all fits now,” She rejoindered.

Severus took a few moments to process what she said. “You’re right. How could we have missed the signs?”

Hermione began giggling. Severus couldn’t help it and began laughing as well. He moved from the chair to the bed and pulled her into his arms. “So, what do we do now?”

“We continue our tour,” Hermione said.

“Honey, you should rest. I don’t want anything to happen to you or the baby,” Severus argued.

“Severus, we can’t just cancel the tour. Look, in the morning I or rather we’ll talk to Healer Ortiz. I’ll find out what I can and can’t do. I promise we’ll take all the proper precautions” Hermione pleaded, trying to placate her husband.

“Deal. If he says no more tour, we reschedule and go home. Understood?” He stated.

“Understood,” She nodded.

Severus watched in awe as his beloved wife addressed the gathered students. In Spanish no less. Yes he could speak Spanish, but not to the caliber Hermione did. Since learning she was pregnant, there seemed to be this glow around her.

As promised, Hermione spoke to Ortiz. He said there was no reason Hermione couldn’t finish the tour. He said using a port key to get back to London from Boston, where the tour would end, would be just fine. Hermione also had a schedule of when to visit at medi-witch or wizard and already had those appointments scheduled.

The couple had written their friends about the happy news. Everyone was thrilled for them and couldn’t wait for them to return. Of course, though Hermione didn’t show it, Severus could tell she was ready to go home as well.

The months flew by. Hermione and Severus finished their appointments in South America and were now in North America. Currently, they were in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was now the home stretch for their highly talked about and successful tour.

“Oh! Severus, put your hand right here!” Hermione cried, grabbing his hand. “Do you feel it?”

“Yes Hermione, I feel our child,” Severus beamed as he felt his and Hermione’s child kick against his hand.

“Severus, are you sure you don’t want to know if it’s a boy or girl?” She asked.

“I’m sure Hermione. All I care about it that you and the baby are healthy,” He answered.

Hermione sighed as she snuggled into his embrace. She was now five and a half months pregnant. She was really beginning to show. To Severus, she had never looked more beautiful than she did now.

“How are you feeling love?” He whispered as he massaged her shoulders.

“A little tired, but I’m fine,” She assured him.

“Are you sure? You looked uncomfortable during the lecture this afternoon,” He replied.

“Oh it’s just my feet were swelling a bit and my back was aching. Before you start getting overprotective, all those things are normal at this stage,” She said.

Severus just held her a little tighter, stopping his massage. “I’m sorry hone. Don’t worry though, in two weeks we’ll be back home,”

Hermione just smiled. “I know. Narcissa wrote and said she and Lucius have a cottage waiting for us in Hogsmeade. I thought maybe, if you want that is, we could stay there till after the baby is born,”

“If that’s what my beloved wants, then that’s what we’ll do. I’ll send word to Albus in the morning and ask Ginny and Narcissa to help get a nursery ready for us too,” Severus agreed.

As the tour began to wind down, Severus couldn’t help but notice Hermione was getting more and more run down. On the last day of their tour, which ended in Boston, Hermione remained in their hotel room to rest. When Severus returned to the room that night, it was to find a medi-wizard exiting the bedroom of their suit. Severus dropped his cloak and rushed to the wizard.

“Are my wife and child alright?” Severus demanded.

“You must be Severus. I was hoping to catch your lecture this evening,” the medi-wizard smiled.

“Answer my question. Are Hermione and the baby alright!” Severus hissed.

“Calm down Mr. Snape. Your child is just fine. It’s your wife I’m worried about. She needs rest. When are you returning to England?” Healer Jameson asked.

“Um…we’re…we’re returning in a week. We had planned to do some sightseeing,” Severus answered.

“No. You need to return to England as soon as you can arrange a port key. I suggest within the next forty-eight hours. It’s my recommendation that she be put on bed rest for the duration of her pregnancy,” Jameson instructed.

“Why? What’s going on?” Severus questioned worriedly.

“It’s as I said earlier, Hermione is exhausted. I think it’s this tour. Yes I know at the beginning of this tour she was fine, but for some reason her body is slowing down. Once you get home, get her to see a medi-witch or wizard at St. Mungo’s right away,” Jameson said.

“I’ll arrange a port key home tonight,” Severus nodded.

****************************************************************************************************************

At ten p.m. Boston time, Hermione and Severus took a port key back to London. The second they appeared at the designated spot, Hermione dropped to her knees in exhaustion. The aides that were at the port key station helped Severus as he gathered her into his arms.

Without a word to the aides, Severus apparated straight to St. Mungo’s where Hermione was immediately admitted. He showed the medi-witch, a former student of his named Christine Harmon, the paperwork from Healer Jameson in Boston.

“Okay, Professor Snape I need you to wait outside please,” Christine said.

“No Ms. Harmon I won’t. I’m staying with my wife,” Severus retorted.

“Look Professor, I understand how you feel. Right now I have three techs in there drawing blood, running diagnostic spells and monitoring your child. I need you to remain out here till we finish our job,” She argued.

As much as Severus wanted to be with Hermione, he also knew Christine and her techs needed to do their jobs and he would only be in the way. “Alright Ms. Harmon, I’ll stay out here. Just…just please help my wife and child,”

“I will. Why don’t you go get a cup of coffee and maybe call a friend to come wait with you,” She nodded.

****************************************************************************************************************

Lucius hurried through the corridors of St. Mungo’s. The second Severus had flooed from St. Mungo’s, Lucius was on his way. He was glad it was Saturday. He found Severus sitting in a chair outside Hermione’s room with his head in his hands.

“Severus, have you heard anything?” Lucius asked sitting beside his best friend.

“I don’t know, they still won’t let me in,” Severus replied. Before Lucius could add anything, the door opened and Christine exited followed by the techs. “Ms. Harmon, are she and the baby alright?”

“Your baby is fine. Hermione however is another matter. She’s exhausted physically. She has also lost weight. At six months she should weigh at least 15 pounds more than she does,” Christine said.

“When can she come home?” Severus questioned quietly.

“In a few hours. When she gets home she is on complete bed rest. The only time she is allowed out of bed is to use the loo or take a bath. Absolutely no showers. Hermione is to stay off her feet as much as possible. I will come by every week till the baby is born,” Christine answered.

“What’s wrong with Hermione?” Lucius spoke up.

“We’re not sure yet Mr. Malfoy. The diagnostic spells didn’t reveal anything so I have sent her blood to be tested. I hope to have those results in the next few days,” Christine sighed.

****************************************************************************************************************

Lucius had insisted that Severus and Hermione come stay at Malfoy Manor. It was closer to St. Mungo’s and Severus would have help with Hermione. Reluctantly, Severus agreed that staying at the Manor would be best for the moment.

Narcissa sighed as she entered her and Lucius’ bedchamber. “He’s finally asleep,”

“I swear that man is stubborn. If this keeps up, Severus will end up in St. Mungo’s himself,” Lucius growled.

Narcissa lay down beside her husband. “He’s just worried about the health of his baby and Hermione,”

Lucius sighed as he pulled her close. “I know I just hope nothing happens to Hermione or the baby. Severus would lose it if that happened,”

Slowly Malfoy Manor fell silent. The Malfoys and the Snapes fell into a peaceful sleep. Both couples forgetting the worries that hung over them.
