Chapter 22 ~ Like-Minded
“You know, something Professor?” Hermione suddenly said to the wizard.
Snape looked at her, his lip quirking.
”I like to think I do, Miss Granger,” he said, “a few things.”
”You are such a complicated man. I bet no one has ever understood you,” she said softly, looking at him with her brown eyes.
Snape studied her a moment.
”Many have thought they did,” he replied.
Hermione looked toward the fire.
”It’s the same for me,” she said, the firelight catching her eyes. “People think they understand me, but they really don’t. You know, I don’t think I’ll ever find love. I’m not even looking for it. I mean, I tried with Ron but you know how that worked out.”
The wizard arched an eyebrow at her.
”Don’t tell me you’ve given up on Love, Miss Granger,” he said to her silkily, “a young woman like yourself. Surely you want to be passionately, head over heels in love?”
Hermione looked at him soberly, then let her head drop back against the back of the armchair.
”You would think that, wouldn’t you?” she said to the ceiling. “But . . . I don’t think I do. Not really. Other witches seem to want a life with their soulmate, a long, romantic courtship, then to marry, have children and just . . . happily ease into the sunset of their lives. I don’t. I never really wanted to, Professor. I could be perfectly happy being unmarried for the rest of my life.”
Snape looked at her, a bit astonished at this statement.
”I mean, I don’t need a wizard to make me feel whole. I’m already whole. I’d rather talk to an intelligent man than sleep with him, although I can’t really speak with the voice of experience,” she said softly, then looked at him.
”Does that make me . . . strange?” she asked the wizard.
Snape studied her.
”It certainly makes you . . . different,” he said in a low voice.
Hermione blinked at him.
”Have you ever been in love, Professor?” she asked him, her brow furrowed.
She watched as Snape’s sallow face took on a bit of color.
”Once. It came to nothing. It was . . . unrequited,” he said rather darkly.
”That’s terrible,” Hermione said sympathetically.
”One of many terrible things that occur in life. It was . . . nothing. One disappointment out of many. I moved on,” he said, standing up and walking over to the liquor cabinet and fixing himself a drink. He turned and looked at Hermione speculatively.
”Would you like one?” he asked her.
Hermione blanched.
”No. I’m permanently on the wagon,” she said, remembering her last bout with alcohol.
He returned to his seat and sipped his drink, aware of Hermione’s eyes on him as well as that annoying aura of wanting to say something else, but not saying it. Finally, he snapped at her.
”What do you want to ask me, Miss Granger? It’s irritating sitting here with an unasked question hanging like lead in the air,” he groused.
Hermione blinked at him.
”How do you deal with it, Professor? Living a loveless life?” she asked him. “Is there some secret to it?”
Snape studied his drink. Yes, there was a secret to it. Leaving a string of sobbing, broken-hearted women behind him and feeling momentary vindication.
”Everyone finds their own way of dealing with it, Miss Granger. I have mine, and I prefer to keep it to myself. I am no longer a teacher,” he said in a low voice.
”I imagine keeping busy helps,” she said, pressing him a bit. “But . . . are you . . . celibate?”
Snape looked at her sharply.
”I think we both know the answer to that,” he said, his dark eyes resting on her. “You had quite the close call with me the last time you . . . imbibed. Only your being a virgin kept me from you. Besides, I prefer my witches sober when they beg for it.”
Hermione reddened and returned her eyes to the fire.
”I’m going to lose my virginity one day,” she said softly, “and I hope it’s because I really feel drawn to whoever takes it . . . but . . . I don’t ever want to fall in love. The moment any wizard tells me he loves me, I’m taking off.”
Snape quirked his lip at her.
”Well, that’s one way to deal with a loveless life, Miss Granger. Keep it loveless,” he purred, also staring into the flames.
It seemed he and the Gryffindor had more in common than he realized.

A/N: All right. I tried to take some of the wind out of Snape’s sails with this short little chappie. He may be bastard!Snape but he can’t get anywhere with a witch who doesn’t want to be in love in the first place. Hopefully someone will continue this. It certainly puts more challenge in the game. I was supposed to be working on IAAU, then I read sad reviewer’s post and decided to put another spin to the story to keep the couple on an even keel.
