“Where are we?” came an innocent query.
“What are you doing here?” he shouted at the bird.
“I came to say goodbye. So where are we anyway?” he said watching the people milling around near the apparition point.
“Why is her here?” asked Severus pointing at the bird.
“He landed on my shoulder just before we left. Wanted to say goodbye.”
“Oh.”
“We have to take you back,” he said to the blackbird.
“Why?”
“You need to get back to the cottage, your family.”
“I don’t have a family. My mate died two summers back.”
“Oh, I’m sorry. You still need to go back though.”
“Why? This place looks interesting. Where is it? I’ve never seen so many humans in one place before. I think I could like it here.”
“Are you sure? We can still take you back if you want.”
“No, I think I’ll stay, if you don’t mind.”
“I don’t mind, as long as you’re sure. Stay put on my shoulder though, I wouldn’t want you to get lost.”
turning to Severus he grinned and pointed to the blackbird.
“We have a tag along. He says that he thinks it’ll be more fun here so he’s staying.”
“Oh. Well… ok then.”
Harry looked at the baffled expression on the other man’s face and burst out laughing before grabbing hold of his arm and tugging him away from the apparition point.
“Come on, let’s go get my stuff.”
As they walked towards Gringotts he suddenly thought of something.
“Hang on. How did you know it was me? I look completely different,” he asked the bird.
“You feel the same. All the wild ones can sense you, you’re very different, powerful.”
“Oh. Ok,” he said, feeling slightly unsettled for some reason.
When they got to the huge front doors of Gringotts he thought of something else and a small wave of panic washed over him.
“Hang on. How am I going to get my money out? I don’t exactly look like me do i?”
“Don’t worry, they’ll know it’s you.”
Walking into the foyer he still wasn’t exactly optimistic, afraid that he’d get arrested for stealing a key. Going to one of the vacant booths he handed over his key and said that he needed to withdraw some money.
“Certainly Mr Potter.”
Ok, so they did know it was him.
“First though if you’d come this way. You’re friend may stay here if you wish.”
“No, its ok, he can come with us.”
“Very well. If you’d follow me please,” the little goblin said, taking them through into a small side office where he asked them to wait while he retrieved some documents. A few minutes later and he returned with a large scroll.
“This is your parents will. Now that you have come of age, their vault is yours. If you would please take the time to read the scroll and sign it. I shall return in a short time,” he said before leaving them.
Breaking the seal he unrolled the scroll, a smaller piece of parchment fluttering out to land on the floor. Reading the will he found that not only had he inherited their vault but also Godric’s Hollow. When he’d finished reading he signed the bottom and rolled it back up again, turning to pick up the piece of parchment from the floor. It was a note from his parents.
To our dearest Harry,
If you are reading this, then I am sorry to say that we are no longer with you.
We are so sorry that we left you alone. Know that we would do anything to be
with you. Know that we always loved you, from the first moment that we knew
about you. Know as well that no matter what we’d be proud of you. I’m sure
you have grown into a fine young man and congratulations on coming of age.
There was only one thing that we wished for you to truly have Harry. Happiness.
Be happy and find love in your life, like I did in your father.
Happy birthday our Harry.
All our love
Mum and Dad.
His hands shook as he read the note and tears blurred his vision, a single one escaping to land on the parchment.
“It’s from my parents,” he whispered, just before the first sob escaped and he threw himself into Severus’ arms. “Why did they have to die Severus?”
He’d long ago forgiven Severus for his part in his parent’s death. It had been a stupid mistake that he’d been paying for ever since. No, he blamed Wormtail. Even after Severus told Voldermort they would never have been found if it hadn’t been for that traitorous little rat.
“I’m so sorry Harry,” he whispered into the young man’s hair, rubbing soothing patterns over his back. Harry may have forgiven him, but he’d never be able to forgive himself. It was just another reason why he’d never be able to have this beautiful young man.
Finally the sobs stopped and Harry collected himself. Taking the tissue that Severus offered he wiped his eyes and looked at the blackbird when it nuzzled his cheek.
“Why are you leaking?”
“I’m crying because I’m sad,” he whispered.
“Oh. I thought you’d broken and were leaking,” he said, making Harry give a little laugh.
“I’m not broken, or at least not yet. Thank you for your concern though.”
It was then that the goblin returned and checking that everything was complete on the will, asked them once more to follow his. Clambering into one of the carts he found himself wedged up against Severus, thighs pressed firmly together, causing him to let out a little involuntary gasp and making him turn his head away to hide the blush that was rising on his cheeks. With the blackbird on his knees he was almost glad when they descended into the gloom of the inner bowels of Gringotts, the cool air rushing over his face, taking his mind off of the man pressed up against him. They soon reached his old vault and after a quick trip in to get his money for the year, he got back into the cart and they made the rest of the slightly nauseating journey down to his parent’s vault, the cart seemingly getting faster. Finally they ground to a halt after jerking round one last corner which threw him off balance, throwing him into Severus, half sat in the man’s lap. With a cough and a blush he quickly removed himself and almost leapt out of the cart, watching as the goblin opened the vault, trying to ignore the presence at his back. When the huge doors opened and he stepped inside he was surprised by what he found. Unlike his own vault that just contained money, this one also contained row upon row of shelves and objects.
“The contents of Godric’s Hollow were also moved here after the accident,” said the goblin, before moving away to leave him to explore.
Down one side of the vault he could see pieces of furniture, including what looked like a huge dismantled bed. on one set of shelves, plates, goblets and cutlery were all neatly stacked. Elsewhere, ornaments, jewellery and countless other things could be seen. It looked like there were things here from several generations. Spotting a stack of paintings resting against the back wall he went to investigate. Looking through he found images of landscapes, dragons and horses, all moving around sluggishly. Then, right at the back, he found something he hadn’t been expecting.
“Severus!” he yelled.
Seconds later he heard footsteps as the other man rushed to see what was wrong.
“What?”
“It’s my parents,” he said, pointing at the painting leaning against the wall, “I don’t understand though. Why aren’t they moving? Why can’t I talk to them like the ones at Hogwarts?”
“Harry, calm down. They have a charm on them is all. It just needs reversing.”
“Can you do it?” he asked hopefully, clutching at the man’s arm.
“Yes. Are you sure you want me to?”
“Yes. I know it won’t bring them back, but I’ll be able to talk to them Severus, get to know them. Maybe in a way I can make up for some of the time we lost."
“Very well. Wait until we return to Hogwarts though. You’re going to have to explain everything that’s happened.”
“Thank you Severus, thank you so much," he said, giving the man a quick impromptu hug before shrinking the painting and slipping it into his pocket. Quickly looking around the rest of the vault he made a note of things that he would come back and get when he left Hogwarts, before calling the blackbird and clambering back into the cart, heading towards the surface and sunlight once more.
Leaving Gringotts they headed to the various shops needed to get his new text books, potions supplies and writing materials. When they’d got everything they finally headed to Madame Malkin’s to get his new uniform and a set of dress robes for the formal ball at the end of the year. They’d managed to get a changing room that Severus had locked so that he could remove Harry’s glamour for the time being. He tried on several kinds, each time getting Severus’ opinion, before finally settling on a set. They were made of a flowing black material that had a slight sheen to it and they just swept the floor when he walked. With it’s high, mandarin style collar and button up front that stopped just above his navel they fit him like a second skin, showing off his trim waist and toned chest, before flaring out slightly at his hips. The hem and cuffs were trimmed with a thin line of silver braiding that glittered in the light. Ok so they were perhaps the most expensive thing he’d ever bought, but it was their last year and it would be worth it. Getting Severus to replace his glamour he went and paid, before practically bouncing out of the shop, bag in hand, still giddy at the prospect of being able to talk to his parents.
With that done they headed back to the apparition point and apparated to Hogsmeade, side along of course. With a quick detour to the Magical Menagerie to pick up essentials for Shale and treats for Hedwig, they started on the walk up to the castle. Soon enough the castle came into view and not long after they passed through the wards, surprising Harry when he felt his skin tingle when they passed through. Using his wild magic he searched out Shale and Hedwig, letting them know that he was on his way, just as the first thestral turned up. Opening the net a little wider to great the animal he was surprised to find that he didn’t receive a reply.
“I can’t hear them,” he said to Severus.
”You won’t be able to. Thestrals are one of the few animals that you will never be able to communicate with. You know that they can only be viewed by those that have seen death first hand. They were born from dreams of war and death, battlefields littered with the corpses of men. The sorrow that the dreamers felt brought them into existence, yet the thestrals mourned for the dead. As a consequence they were born deaf and mute, condemned to mourn in silence. They communicate through body language so you’ll never be able to speak to them.”
“Oh,” he said, looking at the thestral he was patting. He could almost see the sadness in its eyes. “I know how you feel boy.”
The horse gave a silent nicker and nuzzled at Harry’s hand. Somehow they knew what he was on about. After a few minutes and a new resolution to come see them again, they finished the journey up to the castle. Just before they went inside Severus removed the glamours. Stepping through the huge front doors, he barely had time to breath before a fuzzy grey blur ran across the foyer. Bending down it ran straight into his arms.
“Harry!” it squealed happily.
“Hello Shale.”
“I missed you Harry. Why is the blackbird here? Hello Severus.”
“The blackbird is here by accident but he’s going to be staying so be nice.”
Turning to look at Severus he relayed Shale’s message then turned to look at the blackbird that had sat on the man’s shoulder.
“You know I can’t keep calling you the blackbird. You need a name. how about Blue.”
“I’ve never had a name before. Blue. Yes I’d like that. Hello, I’m Blue,” he said cheerfully, making Harry laugh at the double meaning.
Together they walked up to the Headmaster’s office. When they got there, neither of them were surprised to find him sat behind his desk, eyes a twinkle and lemon drops at hand. Before he could even open his mouth to ask the customary question, both Harry and Severus spoke up together.
“No, thank you,” they said in unison, they said when they saw him a bout to ask. Looking at each other, Harry laughed and Severus smiled.
“I think we’ve spent to long together,” Harry grinned.
