Too Little Too Late
Severus looked down at the unconscious Hermione and closed his eyes tightly. There would be a time for tears, and now was not it. Now was a time for revenge. He stood up and looked at Lucius, leaving Hermione in Remus’s arms.
“You killed her mind,” he hissed
“Yes,” Lucius said with a cool airiness.
“Why?”
“Because it was in my power.” Severus sneered at Lucius’s response and stepped over Hermione, reaching forward to grab his collar in a swift movement. Lucius merely laughed as Severus pushed him against the wall of the balcony, his head hanging over the side.
“Kill me then!” Lucius yelled, “I have achieved my goal. I have ruined your life.” He smirked and looked up at Severus, silently begging him to cast the unforgivable with a cold sense of achievement. Severus snatched his wand from him and jabbed it into his throat, his eyes narrow. Moments passed as the two enemies glared at each other, and Remus looked up, unable to speak as he cradled Hermione, too enthralled with the scene.
“You can’t do it can you…” Lucius purred, “Coward. You are still unable to kill me.” A smirk passed across his pale lips, infuriating Severus further.
\"I won\'t kill you until I\'ve reminded you of a few things,\" Snape hissed coldly, gripping Lucius collar, \"you think that death will reunite you with your wife, but it won\'t. You think it will reunite you with your son, but it won\'t. You think you\'ll be happy, Heaven help me Lucius, you won\'t be. And if you think I won\'t be able to retreive Hermione\'s mind, you\'re wrong.\" Snape knew the final point was wrong, but he had to appear confident. Lucius looked at him, considering his points for a second, before allowing a wide smirk to engulf his features.
\"Ah, but we both know what happened to the Longbottoms,\" he said with a wide smirk, \"she\'s a vegetable now, and you can\'t stop that.\" Severus snarled, \"however, i must admit, it won\'t stop you from relieving your tensions once in a while on her. She just won\'t put up a fight, like she did with me,\" Lucius said with a cold sneer, \"don\'t worry, i persevered though. Reminded her exactly where her place was.\" He practically spat the final words, and Snape growled, pushing Lucius\'s head into the stone wall.
\"I will kill you,\" he hissed.
\"So do it,\" Lucius replied coldly, \"Death doesn\'t scare me anymore Snape, no matter what you say.\" They stared at eachother for another moment. Snape knew Lucius wanted death, and refused to reward Lucius with that. Lucius recognised Snape\'s reluctance, and seized his opportunity.
\"She was so desperate when i fucked her,\" he purred, \"and so tight. It makes my skin tingle to think about it Snivellus. I think i had an affect on her though, or she was a whore, because she didn\'t seem to mind the second...or the third....or the fourth...or that time I whipped her.....\" Lucius said with a malicious teasing. The words ignited something in Snape, and he raised his wand furiously.
“Ava…!” Severus raised Lucius wand, and Lucius closed his eyes, waiting to feel death pour over him.
“Severus, stop!” A familiar voice caused both men to look up, and bright, dazzling lights switched on and focused on them from the grounds below the balcony. A jet of light hit Severus and knocked the wand from his hand. Severus remained holding Lucius’s collar and looked over the balcony to see aurors surrounding the grounds, and Dumbledore at the front. They all had their wands raised. He stepped away from Lucius with his hands raised, and Remus stood with Hermione in his arms.
“We arrived as soon as we could,” He heard Dumbledore call to him, “we have the manor surrounded. Don’t kill Malfoy, he’s going to Azkaban. He can’t buy his way out of it.” A cold smirk appeared on Severus’s features as he looked at Lucius, whom was now pale, his eyes wide.
“Not Azkaban,” he whispered softly, “not the Dementors.” Severus saw a fear in Lucius that he wasn’t used to, and if filled him with a twisted glee.
“Yes Lucius, Azkaban, and I’m sure the Dementors will take a great interest in you,” Dumbledore called up to them. Lucius looked at Severus with an arched brow, but his eyes were vacant.
“You may think you’ve got me,” he whispered, before stepping back to the wall of the balcony, “I still won though didn’t I Severus, I still destroyed her.” Lucius smiled, an eerie, awkward smile, before leaning back. Severus watched, almost in slow motion, as Lucius leant back over the side and fell from the third story balcony to the ground. He heard Dumbledore cast the catching spell, but a dull thud told him that Dumbledore’s reflexes were too slow. He ran to the edge of the balcony and looked down to see Lucius. He had hit the concrete of his large patio and was now lying like a broken marionette on the ground, his arms at awkward angles, his head to one side, his neck broken, blood spilling around him and his hair fanning out like a warped halo. His eyes were open, and looked as dead as they had been when he was alive. Severus cursed under his breath, before moving looking to Dumbledore, who was shaking his head sadly.
“I’m sorry my boy,” Dumbledore said softly, “I tried to catch him.” Snape nodded but said nothing, looking down at his once best friend and worst enemy. His mind began to wander as he thought of the incidents of the night, and he looked forlornly to the floor of the balcony, his eyes red with tears, his entire chest pounding with pain.
“Did you get Hermione?” He faintly heard Dumbledore ask.
“No,” Snape whispered softly, too softly for anyone else to hear, “no, we were too late.” He looked up at Remus, who was still cradling Hermione, but looking tentatively over at the body of Lucius. Remus, sensing that Snape was looking at him, turned slowly to return the look. Their eyes met and Remus shook his head.
“I…” Remus said, but words failed him. Snape shook his head.
“Let’s go downstairs,” he whispered, his eyes falling on Hermione, who was still unconscious in Remus’s arms.
