Chapter 22

Chapter 22

Hermione looked at the shelves and racks in the room. While she had always felt that she had plenty of clothes, her wardrobe looked pitifully small when it was hung in the large walk-in closet located directly off the master bedroom in Malfoy Manor.

Malfoy Manor.

She sat down on a padded stool shakily. Thor’s hammer. A prickly heat raced down her neck. Lucius had told her that he loved her. And she hadn’t said anything. She had been so stunned, so surprised. He had been completely sincere. Their bodies had still been joined, the sweat between them not yet cool, and yet she knew that he wouldn’t have said anything that he didn’t mean.

And she hadn’t given him any reply.

She flexed her hands nervously. Damn. It didn’t seem like it bothered Lucius that she didn’t say anything. He’d been very soothing with his soft, reassuring touches and his tranquil voice. Later, after they’d both showered, he’d even asked her if she wanted to move her things up to the master bedroom, and she’d agreed.

She smiled at the thought of the conversation that took place a few hours earlier as she looked around the closet. Lucius had asked the house elves to help her move her things, but before he’d let her go back down he mademade a point of telling her that this space – the closet, her dressing area, even her own bathroom – had never been used. That he had always preferred his space in the past, but he wanted her with him.

Her lips twisted into a wry smirk. He had obviously wanted to make it quite clear that he had never shared his room with his wife. Not that that would have mattered to her. Or least not much; Lucius had made it abundantly clear that he and his wife had spent most of their married life trying to avoid each o. I. Instead, it was touching that he tryitrying to make her feel comfortable.

She gritted her teeth in anguish, reliving again the fact that she hadn’t acknowledged his declaration of love. Gods. Her heart thumped nervously. She had just been so overwhelmed – both physically and emotionally at the time that she had been rendered almost speechless. She had to remedy that as soon as possible.

“Clearly, we need to do something about filling up all this empty space.” Hermione jumped up, startled.

“Merlin’s robes,” she turned on wobbly legs. “I didn’t even hear you come in.” She smiled at him shyly. “I was just trying to figure out what the wear for dinner.” Smooth, Granger. This was not the way to start the conversation that she wanted to have with him.

Lucius smirked at the empty racks. “I wouldn’t think it would take that long.” He paused, his eyes smiling. “But maybe I can help you narrow it down.” He reached inside his forest green vest and pulled out a flat velvet box. He reflected for a moment before he spoke in a soft, clear voice. “I desired youm thm the moment I first saw you standing in the entrance hall. I just didn’t realize that in having you, I’d be giving my soul up to you.” The grey eyes gazed into hers, an intensity burning in their depths.

She smiled shyly at her lover. “It’s only fair, since you possess mine.” She paused, her heart pounding. “I do love you, you know.”

Lucius nodded, smiling, and gathered her into his arms, the velvet box still in his hand. Hermione could feel the steady pounding of his heart, and she inhaled his clean smell of juniper and sage. She sighed contentedly. She’d never before realized that it was possible to feel this complete.

The blonde wizard took a step back, his free hand trailing down her shoulder. “I have something for you, my love. A gift.” He opened the velvet box and presented it to her.

Hermione gasped. A four-carat square-cut emerald topped with small diamonds was set in a platinum bezel and hung on a platinum chain. “Lucius. Thank you. This is absolutely beautiful,” Hermione was finding it hard to speak. She had never seen anything that exquisite in her life.

Lucius smiled at her obvious delight. “I wanted to give you something that you could wear all the time. Here, let me put it on you.”

Obediently, Hermione turned around, and Lucius nuzzled her neck briefly before clasping the necklace around her neck. She turned around and he looked at it hanging around her neck. “Perfect,” he declared. “Now, just wear something that matches this.” He smiled.

“Thank you. This is just wonderful.” She smiled, putting her arms around his neck, “You’re so very good to me. Thank you.”

Her lips met his, and his hands slid down to caress her still-tender flesh through her skirt. “You’re very good to me too, my love,” he murmured softly.

Hermione sat at the desk in the library toying with the emerald pendant. In the past few months, Lucius had given her other jewelry, including an elaborate cabochon ruby, diamond and platinum necklace that had drawn wide-mouthed gawks from both Harry and Draco when they had seen it. She had tried to protest that it was too much, and that she didn’t need expensive jewelry like that. Lucius had only laughed, responding, “My love, I have more than next several generations of Malfoys will ever be able to spend. I enjoy giving you gifts, and it pleases me to see the woman I love adorned better than any empress.”

Her relationship with both Harry and Draco was much more relaxed than it had been when they had first visited the Manor. On their last visit, Harry had told Hermione that he was happy to see Lucius was treating her well, and she had nodded enthusiastically, although she had smiled slightly enigmatically. o, oo, on the other hand, had decided that his father must be serious about Hermione if he was giving her jewels from the family vaults. He had kept the last bit of information to himself; Harry probably didn’t need to know that, and he assumed that his father would want to tell Hermione in his own time.

Not having to worry about how Harry and Draco felt had been a relief for Hermione. However, she now had to confront the Ministry. She had finished cataloguing and duplicatine lae last of the Dark Arts texts and she had planned on sending her letter of resignation in with them. She toyed with the pendant a little longer while she stared at the blank parchment.

It was funny, really. Writing this letter felt a lot more final than moving her belongings out of her apartment had. And she was ready to close out the chapter of her life that involved her employment with the Ministry of Magic. Except that working for the Ministry had given her the chance to get to know Lucius. She smiled. While she would never see book burning as anything less than the heinous crime that it was, it had brought her to a new realization and to a new level in her relationship with Lucius. And for that, she was eternally grateful. She blushed, thinking of their latest exploits in the dungeon. Ever since their first encounter months ago, they had regularly visited the dungeons together. Still, she couldn’t think about that if she wanto geo get this letter written.

Sighing, she picked up her quill and started to write:

To: Cuthbert Reinhold, Minister of Magic

Enclosed is the final collection of Dark Arts texts housed at Malfoy Manor. Also included is a catalogue of all texts housed in Malfoy Manor. I certify that this catalogue is complete and accurate.

As my work here is now complete, I am taking this opportunity to resign from my position ae Mie Ministry of Magic to pursue other interests. Please forward any correspondence, as well as my final pay check to Malfoy Manor.

Sincerely,
Hermione Granger

That should do it, she decided. Succinct and to the point. Sealing the parchment with wax, she took the final bundle of books and the completed catalogue to be owled to the Ministry.

She received a response from the Ministry the next day. She had gone to the greenhouse to help Lucius with some of his orchids, and the owl had found her there.

Dear Ms. Granger,

It has come to our immediate attention that you wish to remain at Malfoy Manor despite the completion of your assigned task. This behavior is highly irregular, and has caused great concern throughout the Ministry. An agent has been assigned to investigate this matter. He will be arriving at 1pm this afternoon. Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Cuthbert Reinhold, Minister of Magic

She handed the parchment over to Lucius silently.

He read through it quickly, raising one eyebrow.

Hermione smiled. “Time to face the music, I think.”

Lucius looked at her quizzically. She bit her lip, holding back a smile, obviously that was another phrase that wasn’t used in the wizarding world. “Don’t worry, my dear. It will be fine. You are an adult, and the Ministry cannot prevent you from spending time with whomever you wish.” I hope, he added silently. “Besides, if all else fails, any Ministry agent is bound to have a few weaknesses.” He smirked wickedly, and Hermione couldn’t help but smile.

They had had a light lunch; Hermione still nervous about the meeting, and had spent a considerable amount of time trying to decide what to wear. She had wanted to make sure she created the right impression; an intelligent, independent witch who had actively made the decision to remain at Malfoy Manor.

She checked her appearance in the mirror a few minutes before 1pm. A long skirt, a long-sleeved blouse, sensible shoes and her emerald pendant. The agent didn’t have to know that she wasn’t wearing panties, and hadn’t worn them for months, did he? She grinned at her reflection and met Lucius in the entrance hall.

Minutes later, a house-elf opened the door and Lucius stepped forward to greet the agent. He tried to contain the surprise in his voice as he recognized the visitor. “Severus, my old friend, welcome. Please come in. You must be the agent from the Ministry.”

A/N: Sort of a short chapter, I know, but this is a natural break point. And yes, I do sort of leap over a few months, but basically those months include another brief visit from Harry and Draco, more Lucius-Hermione smut, and the giving of jewelry. I debated writing some of those scenes, but I wanted to move on with the story - and I have to save some of the smut for the next story! *grin

Thanks for all the wonderful reviews on the dungeon scene. I have to confess, it took me a while to write it because I kept going back over it, trying to make it sound ‘right’. I’m really glad that you enjoyed it – and I’m glad that you let me know. Thanks! I was a little nervous about that scene, and I am glad that it was met with positive responses.

Anyway, the next chapter will be sort of fun (I haven’t finished it yet – I’ve mostly just sketched out my plans for it) with Snape thrown into the mix. I have started writing another Hermione-Lucius story, and will probably post the first chapter or two either today or the beginning of next week. I’m sort of taking a slightly different twist on an old plot. Hopefully it will work out the way I want it to!

Again, thanks for all the wonderful reviews – I appreciate it!
