The Morning After

Chapter 21
The Morning After

The sun poured through the window of the common room and smacked Hermione right in the face.

She squinted and rolled over, letting her hand grope for Draco, then realizing he wasn’t there.

She frowned and sat up, scratching her head sleepily.

Ginny was lying in her sleeping bag, but was awake.

She smiled at Hermione.

“Obviously a little rest did wonders for her.” Hermione thought to herself, smiling back at Ginny.

“Good morning.” Ginny said, cuddled deep in her sleeping bag. Her breath rose in a white fog and hung in the air.

Hermione was reminded of The Caterpillar from Alice In Wonderland.

“I-Am-Alice!” she stated, laughing at her own silliness.

Ginny looked at her puzzled and Hermione waved her off with her hand.

“Nevermind, its a long story.” she smiled at her.

She heard a rustling coming from Draco’s room. Her smile faded and she quickly shrank back down into her sleeping bag.

“Has he been out this morning?” she whispered.

“Yea, he went into the bathroom and showered. You know, you’re boyfriend has a really hot chest.” she laughed, playfully tossing a pillow at Hermione.

She ducked farther into her sleeping bag and dodged it.

“Yea well, go get your own.” she laughed. “Speaking of your own, I wonder if he’s back yet.”

“I dunno, I was getting ready to wonder up to Gryffindor Tower. See if theres any news.” Hermione frowned at the idea of left alone with an angry Draco.

As if readying her mind, Ginny responded.

“Don’t worry. He didn’t look angry this morning. He actually smiled at me on his way back to his room.” Ginny smiled encouragingly.

“Yea, but its not always easy to read Draco.” Hermione glanced at his bedroom door. It was silent once again. She felt a sharp pang of anxiety shoot through her body.

“I really don’t want to fight with him, but theres no way to get his---um, thing back. Its on the bottom of the lake!”

“I don’t know what to tell you dear.” Ginny frowned.

“It’s okay, its not your fault.” Hermione shook her head. “Go, see if anything new is going on.”

Ginny smiled at her before jumping up, but faltered when the cold of the room wrapped around her body.

“Buurrr!” she said, rubbing her arms. She picked up the large patchwork quilt she had been sleeping with off the floor, winding it around her.

She slipped on her house slippers and made her way across the common room.

“I’ll come back later and get my stuff and to let you know if theres any news.” she called from the doorway. “Good luck.”

“Thanks, I think I may need it.” Hermione frowned.

She heard the door click shut and turned to look at Draco’s portrait again.

She breathed in deep.

“Might as well get it over with.” she thought.

She rose up and the burst of cold hit her as it had Ginny. She paused momentarily to use her wand to light another fire in the fireplace. She could feel the warmth radiating from the fire, but it wasn’t enough quite yet to penetrate the piercing cold.

She shivered and ran on her tiptoes to Draco’s portrait, not wanting her feet to touch the cold, hard floor and longer than they had too.

She burst through the door and jumped onto his bed, curling up under the heavy comforter before realizing, it was toasty warm in his room.

The fire burned and crackled in the fire place.

He looked at her with one eyebrow raised.

“Umm...common room. Really cold. heh.” For a brief shining moment, she had forgotten they were in an argument.

He stopped and looked at her. Her cheeks were once again rosy from the cold and having her soft body snuggled against him always made him feel good, but he was supposed to be angry.

He smiled inwardly.

“I’ll just act angry for a bit longer. Can’t give in too soon. I am a Malfoy, after all.”

She pulled away from, looking down at the comforter and playing with the corner.

“I’m sorry. Are you still mad at me?” she pouted.

He tried hard to contain his smile.

“She’s so cute.” he thought.

He simply turned his back to her, curling up on his side.

She leaned in close to his neck and whispered. “Pleeease forgive me?”

He didn’t move.

She leaned farther over and gently bit at his ear lobe. She felt his body jerk and he sucked in his breath in a sharp gasp.

She sighed and flopped back on the bed.

Draco peeked at her over his shoulder.

“What are you doing?” he asked, raising an eyebrow.

“Its freezing everywhere else, but in here. Therefore I’m staying in bed until the rest of the place warms up.” she stated, turning her back on him as well.

He frowned and turned away again.

Hermione could feel him periodically peeking over his shoulder at her, then turning away and huffing.

Finally, in a fit of frustration, Draco sat straight up in bed.

“Get out of my room.” he commanded, though there was obviously no real meaning behind it.

“No.” Hermione stated.

“What?” Draco asked, looking at her like she had 3 heads. “I said get out of my room!”

“No.” she replied once again. “I’ve decided that its now my room too. So you can’t kick me out.”

Draco’s face twisted with thought. He just wasn’t sure how to handle this.

“This is my room and I say you have to leave!” he commanded once again, pointing toward the door.

“This is our room and lets see you make me.” Hermione smirked.

“Shes smirking at me!” his mind cried. “Shes actually full on smirking!”

In one quick movement he turned over and seized her around the waist, flipping her over as well. He began to blow raspberries on her neck.

She howled in laughter and swatted at him.

The raspberries stopped, but he simply lay with his face buried in her neck.

“So, are you still mad at me?” she asked, snuggling her face against him.

“A bit.” he sighed. “I mean, you took something extremely personal to me and just threw it away. Whats next?? My broom??”

Hermione kind of giggled and he raised to look at her.

“I’m sorry.” she said. “I really am.”

He leaned forward and kissed her gently.

“If in the future you are ever annoyed by any of my belongings, please inform me and we’ll come up with a suitable solution together, alright?”

“Alright.” Hermione smiled up at him. He leaned in again and kissed her.

“Hungry?” he asked. “I was thinking of going down to breakfast.”

“I don’t want to eat in the Great Hall.” she frowned. “Can’t we eat up here?”

“I suppose so.” he stated. “You know, this isn’t healthy. You’re cutting me off from my friends. Thats a form of abuse you know...”

She laughed and smacked him on the arm.

“Alright, alright, I’m going.” he said, climbing off the bed. “I’ll be right back.”

She watched him leave the bedroom, then heard the familiar click of the common room door.

She stretched luxuriously, basking in the warmth of Draco’s room. She had spent the night on the cold floor and was now enjoying the feeling of the soft bed below her.

She sat up and slid off the bed, heading toward the bathroom.

When she entered the common room, she was pleased to see that the cold air had lost its bite. It wasn’t as comfortable as Draco’s room, but it was definitely a start.

She stepped into the bathroom and took out her tooth brush.

Suddenly, her head started to swim. She took hold of the sink. It wasn’t the first time it had happened and it usually passed.

Hermione took deep breaths, but the spinning in her brain didn’t slow. She seen bright colors flashing before her eyes, blurring the room and eventually turning everything a bright white.....then black.

Hermione woke, but didn’t open her eyes.

She could hear Madame Pomfrey talking to Draco.

“We’re not sure what caused the fainting spell.” she told him. “Pregnancy has lots of strange symptoms. I can assure you though, she is in perfect health.”

She heard Draco breath a deep sigh of relief and felt his hand reach out to stroke her forehead.

“The baby....” he began, sounding kind of nervous. “Is it okay?”

“Well, lets take a look, shall we?” she said.

***********************************

Draco watched as the Medi-Witch lifted Hermione’s top and tapped her slightly swollen abdomen with her wand.

Just as before, the red smoke curled into the air before revealing a tiny, curled image of a baby.

It looked slightly more human now. It even had little fingers and toes.

“Aww...” cooed Madame Pomfrey. “Look, its sucking its thumb!”

“Speaking of ‘it’” Draco began again. “When can you tell us what the baby is?”

“Well,” Madame Pomfrey stated. “The external genitalia is formed by the third month. Since Hermione is in her fourth, I should be able to tell you now. Providing the baby is cooperative.”

Hermione could almost feel the surge of excitement shoot through Draco’s body.

She felt Madame Pomfrey press her stomach.

“Come on little one...” she cooed. “Turn over...That\'s a good baby.”

She felt a few more pressed on her abdomen, before the Medi-witch’s hands left her abdomen.

“Well, Mr. Malfoy,” she began. “It looks like yourself and Miss Granger will be having-”

“I don’t want to know!” Hermione interrupted.

A/N: lol I’m so mean, aren’t I? I found out on babiesonline today that the sex of the baby can be determined at 3 months. Just goes to show you how quickly this sort of thing advances! When I was pregnant with Zoie just 3 years ago they couldn’t tell me what she was until the 5th month and couldn’t hear a heartbeat until I was 12 weeks along. Now they can get one at 3 weeks! It’s crazy, I tell you, crazy. Well, thanks for all your reviews! I really appreciate it! :o)
