Chapter XXI: Princess of Darkness
Chapter XXI: Princess of Darkness
09/25/1996
The sun had risen an hour ago, and Hera was still looking out the window in awe. It was the second time she had seen it come out since she could remember. Her second day of freedom. The ocean crashed against the small concealed island where the castle was in, it’s sound made her feel powerful somehow, and at the same time, it was soothing.
‘You’re up early’, Voldemort’s voice reached her ears.
She didn’t turn around to face him like any Death Eater would do. Instead she just answered with a short ‘Indeed.’
He walked toward her and put a hand in her shoulder. ‘Are you liking my humble view?’
‘It’s beautiful’, she smiled.
‘It could be yours, if you act wisely.’
Hera looked up at his snaky face, but she didn’t find it as hideous as everyone else did. Underneath that cruel shell, there was a human being begging to be loved, and that made her sad. She knew what it was like to be alone, no matter how hard Draco had tried to be with her both in presence and mind.
‘That name you carry is a lot more than who your family is’, he went on. ‘Malfoys tend to be extremely ambitious, which is an excellent quality. But sometimes, they let their fear take over them and it makes them lose control over what’s good for them.’
He stared at the horizon and, after a short silence, he spoke again.
‘I trusted you father, but I always had the feeling that his devotion would decline sometime. What I would like to know is if I can really trust you.’
‘You can, Master’, she answered solemnly.
‘Good. I hope you stick to that. If you don’t fail me, you will gain more power than any of my Death Eaters, because your gift is irreplaceable. I’ll let you live here, I’ll give you everything you could never have, all in exchange of your loyalty. You will be the princess of darkness.’
‘When do I sign?’, she grinned.
‘You already have. Now, explain to me when and how to kill that stupid Potter so I can cross that off my to-do list’, he said sitting on an armchair in the middle of the room.
‘Well, I already told you that my brother is the key to his downfall. Potter always lets his feelings get to him. The perfect time to attack will be when he’s attached enough to him, that way he’ll be more vulnerable when we kill him. He won’t even fight back.’
‘Yes, using the people he loves is a tactic I’ve used several times, but I had never been able to find that one person that would leave him destroyed enough to even care about his life.’
‘Now you have’, she smirked. ‘And to prove you my loyalty to you, I ask you to let me kill Draco myself. A dagger, that’s all I need.’
‘I wasn’t really expecting you to do it. You’re just a child, even though you seem to be mature enough to run an adult’s life. I doubt you’ll have the inner strength to do it. But if you consider yourself capable of taking somebody’s life, then do it. That instant when a heart stops beating because of you, makes you feel more powerful than all the magic in the world. It really helps you built your character, and I could only wish that for you.’
‘Thank you, Master’, she bowed elegantly and turned around to see out the window again, her own thoughts merging with the sound of the ocean.
