CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE: GAMES AND GUARDIANS
Following the slam of the door to Severus’s private quarters was a very long, very uncomfortable silence.
Before he even got a chance to open his mouth, however, Hermione spoke.
“But he’s still Obliviated, isn’t he?”
Severus caught her gaze. “I suppose so,” he replied. “Though why he remembers my name... I daren’t even guess. Nor is it exactly comforting to know that he somehow – and for some unknown reason – managed to escape.” He sat down in one of the stuffed armchairs, rubbing his temples.
Hermione took a few steps closer, observing him as though wondering whether or not he was up for her company after Draco’s rather disturbing visit.
He sighed. “I am sorry, Hermione,” he said, before he could stop himself, “this was not how this evening was supposed to turn out.”
She hesitated, biting her bottom lip. “How was it supposed to turn out, then?”
“Oh, I don’t know... Preferably without Draco catching his former Professor and friend-of-nemesis kissing would be a good start.”
At that, Hermione smiled. “I didn’t mind, you know.”
He raised an eyebrow. “You didn’t mind?”
“I mean, I didn’t enjoy him walking in on us,” she smiled, “but I didn’t mind. It’s not as if I was embarrassed or anything like that... Well, okay, maybe a little,” she added as an afterthought, “but that was because I wasn’t – er – completely dressed.”
Severus couldn’t resist sighing with relief. She probably didn’t know it, but with those few simple sentences she’d said something that meant more to him than anyone could have suspected.
She’d st, mo, more or less, that she wasn’t ashamed of being with him. And what’s more, in a way she’d stated that she indeed was with him. They were a couple. Severus Snape had a woman to call his own, and he was more than willing to be completely hers in return.
She hadn’t been embarrassed. She didn’t mind that a sly, rude bastard like Draco Malfoy saw and commented on her kissing her ex Professor. She didn’t mind.
Severus actually had trouble letting it all sink in. When had any women ever been with him and not been embarrassed, or afraid of someone finding out who she was with?
Oh, wait. He could think of one woman – or rather, a girl...
But he wasn’t about to start thinking of her now. She was quite literally a thing of the past.
“Yes, well – I apologize for that, then,” smirked Severus.
“For what?”
“For having partly undressed you upon Draco’s arrival.”
Hermione laughed – that beautiful, mirthful laugh that was always enchanting, even when directed at his expense. “Well, I didn’t object, did I?”
“No, you didn’t.” He smirked again. “Ought I to thank you for that as well?”
She smiled and took the few remaining steps over to the chair in which he sat. “No,” she said in a quiet voice. “I wasn’t doing charity work, you know.”
“No?”
“Oh, no,” she smiled. “In fact, er... Do you mind if I try something?”
Well, that certainly awoke his interest. Try something? Try what?
“What?” he asked.
“Do you mind?” she insisted.
He shook his head, giving a slight smile.
Hermione – hesitant, yet determined as always – moved so close to him her feet met with his knees. Then, slowly (so as to not fall, Severus suspected), she put one hand on each of the arms of the chair and crawled onto his lap, straddling him with her face on level with his.
He couldn’t help but raising his eyebrows yet again. She certainly kept surprising him. Though this wasn’t at all like the ice cream-stunt back at the IMG, where he’d felt he’d had to teach her a lesson or two. No, this was just wonderful...
His hands immediately jumped to her thighs, which were halfway bared now thanks to her dress sliding up. Without speaking a word, she leaned in to kiss him, starting out gently but quickly turning it into a thorough, passionate kiss.
When she pulled away, she was smiling.
“Do you mind?” she asked again.
He smirked. Hm. I do believe I’ve awoken a little minx.
“Not at all,” he replied and placed a hand gently at the back of her neck, pulling her to him for another kiss. For all he cared, they could stay like this for hours – but then again, there might be more productive ways (in the same approximated field, obviously) of spending the evening...
---
Lucius Malfoy also found a way to make use of the evening. He was doing some serious research.
---
“Just stay right there,” she instructed with a smile.
Severus did as he was told, and remained seated on the bed, an expression of curiosity on his face.
So far, the entire evening had been full of surprises. Hermione had clearly left most of her previous shyness behind her when she’d come to Hogwarts earlier that day, to Severus’s great pleasure. Right now, she was backing a few meters up so he got a good view of her, then she sent him a pleased grin and turned her back to him, now facing his full-length dress mirror.
So what was the meaning of this, exactly?
Severus found out soon enough.
Still with her back to him, she began loosening the buttons of her dress, slowly and gradually revealing the beautiful skin of her back.
Severus had to smirk. If it wasn’t for the full-length dress mirror, he’d just see her back and nothing more. Clearly she’d placed herself in front of that mirror for a reason – looking at it, he saw her reflection observing him as his eyes swept over her now naked torso in the mirror.
Oh, gods...
There was something about the effect it caused – something about just seeing her front in the reflection, catching her eyes through the mirror, it was mesmerizing. Severus seriously suspected she already knew a thing or two about the magic of mirrors.
Her dress slipped off down her hips and pooled on the floor. Hermione gently pushed it away with her feet, and remained now clad in nothing but her panties, standing as though frozen in front of the mirror, watching Severus intently.
Oh, but she was so brilliant – obviously not only in beauty, but also in mind, and even more so in those two combined. He could see every part of her with the help of that mirror, both frontal and back, and it was such a sight... And when her hands moved to the edge of her panties, he held his breath.
She slowly – too slowly, in Severus’s opinion – slid them down her legs, leaving her completely naked in front of his mirror, the candles still lit and everything. He remembered how she’d wanted it dark back at the IMG, but now something had clearly changed. She wasn’t embarrassed or ashamed anymore.
“Beautiful,” he couldn’t help but whisper, and she smiled.
She really was beautiful, and he felt he would die if he didn’t get to show her how much he appreciated it. He got to his feet and swiftly made his way over to her, his arms snaking around her from behind, caressing the soft skin of her stomach. His lips went to her neck, gently kissing and licking.
He smirked into her skin as she moaned.
---
What brought this on? Hermione couldn’t quite decide.
Suddenly she wasn’t shy at all. Suddenly, out of pure instinct, she’d stripped naked in broad light, having Severus watch her every detailed move. She’d never expected herself to be the type who’d do a thing like that.
The thing was... she kind of liked it. This, for example, with him still being clothed, his hands and lips on her naked body, was strangely arousing... That he was clothed, and she was naked. Just the very thought had given her shivers earlier that day, before she’d gone to Hogwarts. Now, having just done it, her theory about its efficiency had been confirmed. Oh, she felt wonderful... Somehow, it was as though he was in her power. The mere sight of her body could cause such a pful ful reaction from him, and she simply enjoyed using that.
“Beautiful,” he whispered again against her skin, and she had to smile. A tingling feeling was travelling through her very bones at his administrations, and once his hands reached her breasts her breath was loud and her hands were unconsciously reaching behind her to feel his body.
He quickly spun her around then, capturing her lips and pulling her as close as she could get. Her hands jumped to his neck, urgently sliding them underneath the edge of his shirt to feel his skin.
He broke the kiss, but his face remained close to hers.
“You’re full of surprises, Miss Granger,” he said huskily.
“I had hoped you would approve, Professor,” she smirked back.
“Severus,” he urged. “Not Professor – Severus.”
“Severus,” she whispered in agreement to his lips, then kissed him again.
They quickly moved their activities from the floor to Severus’s bed.

The following morning, some rather unexpected news reached the Headmaster of Hogwarts’ office.
Albus Dumbledore was unfolding his Daily Prophet, flipping absentmindedly through the pages, his focus mostly on his cup of tea, when suddenly a small article caught his attention.
“Well, what do you know,” he commented to himself as he read the headline and down the page:
Lucius Malfoy relocated – St Mungo’s signed release papers
The Daily Prophet (LONDON): On August the 15th, 2000, Mr Lucius Malfoy was, as we all know, found with a Complete Obliviation at the IMG Conference. Around noon on the 16th, he had vanished from his room at St Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries, leaving the hospital workers and the Head of the Board at Spell Damage Department – Mr Jonathan Rickspile – in complete riot.
Today, on the 27th of August (less than two weeks after Mr Malfoy’s mysterious disappearance), the spokesman at St Mungo’s is happy to inform The Daily Prophet that Mr Malfoy had been relocated and is safe.
“A friend of his arrived on his behalf this morning,” said the spokesman, “explaining to us the situation. We were allowed home to this friend, where we found Mr Malfoy to be all well, catching up on lost literature in his friend’s rather enormous library.”
Said friend off to to take the responsibility as guardian to Mr Malfoy, which must be a great relief to his son, Mr Draco Malfoy, who has pointedly refused to have anything to do with his father’s current state of being.
“He’s none of my business,” stated the young Mr Malfoy to a Prophet reporter, “nor is this any of yours, really.”
Given the attitude of his son, it’s safe to say Mr Malfoy should be quite relieved to have gotten a more caring guardian to help him through this difficult time. Aforementioned friend said this mornin The Daily Prophet:
“I was delighted to hear I was appointed guardian to Lucius. He is an old friend of mine, and hopefully we will be able to work out his new life together. He is doing very well, optimi, re, really; already he’s trying to get back into learning about magic and his life as it was prior to the unfortunate attack.”
Mr Lucius Malfoy’s friend and guardian has stated that for the sake of his family and privacy, and for Mr Malfoy, he will remain anonymous. The Prophet can, however, assure the readers that this is a true gentleman worthy of such a challenging task!
We wish Mr Malfoy the best of luck in his recovery.
For The D Pro Prophet, Linda Luggishaw
Albus frowned. Now who could this mysterious guardian be? This apparent saviour who just turned up out of no where and saved the day...
And why hadn’t The Prophet mentioned a single thing about how Lucius Malfoy had escaped? Surely they were just sucking up to him, as usual, but still – Albus would feel a lot more relaxed if he knew how and why Lucius had escaped in the first place.
Was it possible that this saint of a guardian, this anonymous friend, could have helped him? In which case, there was even tore ore reason to find out who he was. Somehow, something didn’t quite seem right about all of this.
Why would St Mungo’s just allow Lucius Malfoy to walk free after such an escape? Even with a guardian, that still seemed irresponsible.
Oh, well. Perhaps they were just eager to get rid of him.
Either way, Albus felt there was someone in particular who really needed to learn about this new turn of events.
He reached for a piece of parchment and a quill, and scribbled a few lines down before attaching the parchment to the newspaper article. Then he stood up from behind his desk and went over to the hearth.
Grabbing a handful of Floo powder, he threw it into the fireplace. Great green flames immediately shot up, and throwing the newspaper and the piece of parchment into the fire he said in a loud, clear voice:
“Severus Snape, the dungeons!”
