Chapter Twenty
Harry walked into the lab, wondering not for the first time what he was doing at Hogwarts. Hermione had called and asked him to show up early that morning. She had told him to come over whenever he had the time, but to make it a point to get there as early as possible. And so he had made it a point to rearrange his day in order to be there. When he had floo called Sirius he had expected him to say that he didn’t have the time, but the head auror told him that he had been informed of the meeting.
“Make the time,” the older auror said to him.
“For what?” Harry asked.
“I’m not entirely sure, but I was told that if you didn’t make the time that Head Master Snape would hunt you down.”
So there he was at the Hermione’s private lab at the school waiting for his friend without a clue as to why. A moment later the witch in question came into the lab with what could only be called test tubes and samples. But that wasn’t what worried him. Oh no, that wasn’t it at all. Next into the room was Snape and he was…gulp…smiling.
“Harry,” she murmured. “Good to see you.” She went about setting up the table as she spoke, “I had an idea. No, dare I say it, an epiphany. Here I was working my unpaid ass off, when you are more than able to do the work…”
“Hermione…” Harry started only to go silent the moment he saw Snape stroke his wand handle.
“Harry,” she murmured, walking around the table to be standing next to him. “Was it not you that insisted that I go undercover in order to know what aurors go through?”
“I do believe his words were to become a real auror,” Severus growled.
“Yes, I do recall that clearly as if I heard it but a moment ago from your very lips, Harry,” she said, glaring at her friend. “Now it’s your turn. You get to learn to be a criminologist.” She motioned to the table. “Today you will be learning how to do DNA testing and comparing the findings of those two samples.” Stepping back from him. “But alas I can’t be the one to teach you, which is the reason Severus has so graciously volunteered his time to do so.” Taking a deep breath and she rushed out with, “Please for the love of Merlin don’t kill each other.”
“You can’t leave!” Harry exclaimed.
“But I can, because you see I can’t be around the testing as it was pointed out by you,” she told him flatly. “Remember that?” She rushed on before he could stick his foot further into his mouth, “Good. I have a book to pick up and a lovely herbal tea…” she sneered at the mentioning of the tea. “…waiting for me.” Hermione went over to her husband and hugged him. “What I wouldn’t give for a shot of fire whiskey right now.”
Kissing her head, Severus walked her out of the lab. “Don’t worry, witch. I won’t hurt him.”
She only looked up into his obsidian eyes and waited.
He relented as he added in a grumble, “Much.”
Grinning she said, “For a second I was worried that I was speaking to your good twin.” She kissed him quickly and went on her way.
Turning on his heel Snape faced Harry Potter, the one time savior of the wizarding world, to find him sweating and nervous. Yes, Severus thought evilly, life was good.

“So what are they testing this time?” Albus asked Hermione, as he fought not to laugh at the sour look she had given the herbal tea she had just sipped on.
“DNA testing and comparison of the blood of the wizard that broke into the school as well as that of Lucius Malfoy. That way we can see if our villain is or is not related to the Malfoys.”
“Intriguing. And if he is related to Lucius?” Albus asked.
“That chances are that the Yaxley in question is Lucius’s half brother,” she murmured. “And if he isn’t, more investigation will be needed.” Hermione took a nibble of the cookie on her plate, letting out a long sigh. “With any luck the testing will be done without my husband and my best friend killing each other.”
Albus looked weary. “You have my sympathies, my dear.”

“For the love of Merlin, Potter! I said anti-clockwise!” Severus yelled at him. “Can’t you hear or has years of disregarding what anyone has to say stopped you from listening to instructions?”
Harry glared at him, growling, “What Hermione sees in you is beyond me! You’re still the same greasy git you…”
“HARRY POTTER, DON’T YOU DARE!” came out of nowhere and had them both jumping in surprise looking around the room for Hermione, but she wasn’t there.
“Where is she?” Harry whispered.
“Not in the room,” Severus muttered. “I warded it to prevent her from entering while we’re testing.”
“But how…”
“She’s set up spell work in the room, I wager,” the headmaster told him. “To prevent us from name calling. It didn’t start until you called me a ‘greasy git’…”
“If I’m not allowing Harry to call you that, Severus, what makes you think I’m going to allow you to do so?” she snapped.
“Wow,” Harry muttered. “Uh, lets get this over with shall we? The last thing I need at the moment is another person yelling at me. All this potion work has me on edge as it is. I haven’t work with them in years.”
Snape relaxed at those words. “Why didn’t you just say so?”
It seemed from that moment on that Snape was far more patient with the other wizard and Harry, in turn, was far more at ease. But a half an hour later when the results were floating over the cauldrons, both were rather puzzled.
“We did everything the instructions said, didn’t we?” Harry asked Snape, looking down at Hermione’s notes and making mental check marks next to each in order to make certain.
“Yes, that we did, Potter,” Severus muttered, looking at the results. “It would appear that the man that attacked Hermione in our rooms isn’t in any way related to Malfoy.
“Meaning?”
Sighing he looked at his former student and said the words he hated. “We just may very well be dealing with the man himself. Yaxley.”
“But how?” the younger wizard asked.
“I haven’t a clue.”
