Chapter Twenty

Hermione was wincing every time he slammed a door shut, but the moment he did so with Ginny there she had to admit that it was beginning to get more than a little tiresome. Sighing heavily, she excused herself a moment. Going into his private lab, she stopped just short of his table where he was currently massacring a ginger root.

“Ginny is here to take me shopping for a dress,” she told him. When he grunted, she added, “I shouldn’t be gone longer than two hours.” But he kept on mincing the ginger, this time not even answering her. “What are you making?”

He stopped and looked over to her. “A mess.”

“So I see,” she murmured, going over to him. “I’ll have my coin with me. Please be careful.”

“Since when have you been a potions master?” he asked her haughtily.

“I’m not a potions master. But the last time I checked some potions that call for ginger in any form need it to be peeled least it makes the potion explode,” she murmured, going up on tiptoe and kissing him. “I’ll be back as soon as I can.”

He wrapped his arms around her, pulling her all the tighter to himself. Hugging her, he whispered, “It isn’t you I’m angry at. You did what was right. Regardless of the fact that it was that mutt Black, I know that much.”

Hermione’s arms went around him, pressing her face into his chest. “Sooner or later you have to let go of this hate you have for Sirius Black. If only for yourself, Severus.”

He snorted. “It would be only for me,” he pointed out to her. “The man is dead.” Kissing her temple, he whispered, “Keep safe, love.”

“You too,” she sighed, melting against him even as she was supposed to leave. “I hate shopping for dresses.”

“Think of it as shopping for tomes if you must,” he suggested to her.

“I would much rather be here with you brewing,” she breathed. “I love watching you brew.” Hermione made herself pull away. “I better leave before I try to throw you to the floor and have my wicked way with you.” Hastily she tossed out the ginger. “I don’t want you hurting yourself.” Blowing a kiss, she was gone.

Content with renewed, yet well hidden, happiness, he read the recipe and sure enough his little know it all had been correct. Feeling totally un-Slytherin, he went about preparing more ginger root, this time humming as he did so.

Ginny stopped looking at the dresses and looked over to her stunned. “He was humming?”

“Yes,” Hermione replied grumpily as she put back yet another dress. “I think he was happy.”

This had Ginny totally flabbergasted. “Snape? Happy?”

Hermione looked over to her friend, blinking owlishly. “Yes, happy. Not in the traditional sense of the word, mind you. Never that.”

“But still…”

“The tune he picked to hum was a dirge.”

Ginny rested back on her heels and murmured, “That’s sounds more like him.”

Hermione barely resisted the urge to roll her eyes, when she spotted Neville watching Ginny from outside the big picture window at the front of the store.

“I’ll be right back,” she told her friend rushing outside. “Neville, come on in.”

“What…No, that wouldn’t be…”

“Nonsense,” she murmured. “Be her friend, Nev. She needs one.” Flicking a look over to Ginny she added, “She’s pregnant.”

“What?” he asked, shock glossing over his features.

“The Carrows, they raped her as a form of punishment,” she told him quietly. “Did you know…?” He nodded slowly. “Because they did so to you too?” He looked to her sharply. “You don’t have to tell me. It’s okay. But whatever the case, don’t you think she could use a friend that understands?”

Neville swallowed thickly. “I’m not good enough for her.”

“Of all the idiotic things I’ve ever heard that must be the most idiotic,” she snapped. “You are gifted when it comes to growing magical plants and their application. You, Neville Longbottom, are also one of the bravest young wizards I know. And just because your Grandmother may not see it, doesn’t make what she says so.”

Neville smiled shyly. “Thanks.”

“Now come along, we need help,” she told him looking back into the store. “Why couldn’t it be books we were shopping for?”

He was still chuckling as he went inside the shop with her. From that moment on, she got the young wizard and Ginny talking to each other. Hermione got him involved in helping picking out the dresses and ended up leaving them having fizzy waters and a chatting quietly in the pub.

Hermione was still feeling proud of herself when she was grabbed from behind when she was passing an alley. Next thing she knew she was being slammed against the wall, her head hitting the masonry with a thud.

“So damn smart, aren’t you?” the man growled against her ear. “I know what you did. Sure you brought back some good people, but only four? Why not others? But no, you had to stop there!” His fingers dug into her arms. “I thought at first I should just watch you hurt. It was enough. But then you had to be so damn good, huh? All those fucking people protecting the good little witch!” He tried to slam her into the wall again, but was shocked when she slammed her fist back into his crotch, followed by her elbow to his gut.

He stumbled back. But since he was wearing a robe with a hood, she couldn’t see who it was. Stepping up to him, she kicked him in the knee in a way that dislocated it and sent him to the ground in a heap. Panting she was beginning to feel too dizzy to move. She heard the crack of the wizard disapperating even as she grabbed the coin out of her pocket.

Hermione was still holding it as she fell to her knees, feeling the blood running down her face as she tried to focus. She crumpled to the floor just as Severus arrived, looking like an avenging angel. Or so she thought before her world turned black.

I love me some cliffhangers (insert evil laugh here)! Sorry I've been so slow with the updates. This story for some reason or another is like walking through tar to produce. Please I ask for your patience and hopefully we'll all be rewarded in the end! Thanks again.

Time for the Review Sing-A-Long! The last answer was "Shambala" by Three Dog Night. Cookies and skim milk go out to Third Angel and Foofie! If I missed you, I'm sorry.

Time for the next song! "Like a review of love that clings to me/how the thought of you does things to me" There you go. No hint this time, sorry. Have a great day, people!
