An Unbreakable Vow
When Ron returned to the Gryffindor common room, Harry took one look at his face and said, “What’s wrong with you, mate.”
Ron just glared at him and said, “I cannot believe you didn’t tell me. What kind of friend are you to keep something this big from me. I could have been more prepared for this.”
Harry knew without saying that Ron had discovered Hermione’s secret. He started to explain but Ron scoffed at him and ran off to their dormitory, obviously disgusted with his friend. Harry sighed as Ginny walked in the room. She went over to him and kissed him softly on the lips after seeing the expression on his face.
“What’s wrong, love,” she asked?
Harry just looked into her understanding eyes and said, “Ron has found out something that he was upset by. He is mad that I didn’t tell him something, but honestly Gin, it wasn’t my information to tell.”
She just ran her fingers through his hair and smiled and said, “Don’t worry love, you know Ron, he’ll get over it. He just needs some time to cool off.”
Harry just looked into his girlfriend’s eyes and could not believe how incredibly lucky he was. She was so respectful of him, she did not even ask for details of what Ron found out. He could not remember why he had ever looked at anyone else. This in front of him, with her warm eyes, was the woman he was going to marry; if he lived through the war.
He knew that he had an incredible task ahead of him, and he didn’t know if he was even going to be able to accomplish it. He had hope though, hope for a world without fear, hope for a world in which the wizarding community was accepting of all kinds, and hope for a world where he could make a life for his future wife and himself.
He could just see how attractive their children would be. Hopefully they would have their mother’s red hair, and maybe get his green eyes. They would be beautiful, and powerful, and he would have the most amazing family anyone could have. He wondered if Ginny ever thought about these things.
He wondered if Hermione ever thought she might have those things with Malfoy. Its funny how that worked out. He could stop thinking of him as the ferret, but he couldn’t think of him as Draco, not yet. He wondered whether they were having a boy or a girl, and how this child was going to help him with his task of defeating Lord Voldemort. He had so many questions, but the one person he trusted most was Dumbledore. He knew that Dumbledore cared about him, and that he would help him at all costs. He knew Dumbledore was keeping things from him, but he also knew that he would find out what he needed when it would be of importance to him.
Draco looked over the sleeping angel before him. He had almost lost her or the baby today and it scared him into realizing that all of this pretending had paved the way for something real. He didn’t know when it happened, or in what moment, but he had realized that he had lost all his desires to hurt Hermione or to give their child up to the dark lord. He would protect them both at all costs, even with his life. He didn’t care if he had to lie, cheat, or kill, he would keep them safe. Draco knew what he had to do; he needed to see Dumbledore again.
He nervously made his way to the office. He said the password and made his way upstairs and knocked on the professor’s door. Dumbledore told him to come in. Draco looked into the man’s soft blue eyes and knew that he had to tell him the complete truth in order to help his situation.
So he started, “Professor, I need to talk to you about a lot of serious stuff. I need you to not say anything till I finish.”
Dumbledore nodded at this, and Draco continued, “I lied to you the last time I came to see you. When I told you that I wanted to protect Hermione and my child I was lying. I went to see the dark lord and I told him everything. I know about the prophecy and I will not let any harm come to our child. I was told to make Hermione fall in love with me, I made sure she got pregnant and I have reported everything to the dark lord, and I fell in love with her in spite of all of this. I want to come over to the light side; I want to help bring down Voldemort. I will do anything you ask of me, but please help me keep what I love.”
Dumbledore took in everything that the boy was telling him. Of course he knew this all along; you see because Dumbledore was the greatest legimens that exists, and therefore could read the boy’s thoughts all along. Draco did not know this however, and Dumbledore was not about to break this news to him. This was the breaking point that he had been waiting for. This boy was the key to bringing down Voldemort; between Severus and Draco, there was every opportunity to find out what would be necessary to destroy him for once and all.
Dumbledore thought carefully and said, “Draco, I believe you, but I will need something more than your assurance that you will do all that you can to protect your family. I’m going to need for you to create an unbreakable vow.”
Draco looked up and him in surprise, but answered, “Of course professor, if you would like you can get a witness for this.”
Dumbledore got Dobby to report directly to him. Dobby stood watch while Draco created an unbreakable vow to protect Hermione and his child at all costs. When he was finished,
Draco asked, “Professor I know that I have asked a lot of you, but there is one more thing that I would like for you to help me with. I want to marry Hermione before she has this baby so that I may not be able to lose her.”
“Are you sure this is what you want Draco, once you are married, you are married for life,” said Dumbledore.
Draco nodded and then Dumbledore replied, “Of course Mr. Malfoy, we can have a wedding this weekend in the great hall, if Miss Granger will have you. We may need to keep this quiet still because we are going to have to keep this knowledge from some of the Slytherins that may report your activities to Voldemort.”
Draco nodded at this and then left to ask Hermione the big question.
