Author’s Note:
Thanks to everyone for the wonderful reviews. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate them.
Poppy has instructed her followers to call her “Master” instead of “Mistress” because she does not want anyone to guess her identity until it is waaaay too late for them to do anything. Also, there’s not much of Harry & Severus in this chapter. I know, I know, but I promise - the next chapter will have A LOT of Snarry in it. And, we may even get to move on to another day!!!!
Salena ...(Greek) "the moon". Also “moon goddess”.
From Chapter 19: THE RETURN OF SIRIUS BLACK …
Remus’s eyes widened and his breath caught in his throat. He staggered a little on his feet. Remus was vaguely aware of the Headmaster’s surprised, “Oh my!” and Severus’s equally stunned grunt. There, cradled lovingly in Sirius’s arms, with wispy curls of tawny hair, eyes of golden amber and just under a year and a half old, was a small child.
Chapter 20: THE MATURITY OF THE MARAUDERS
Present – Sunday Evening:
Charlie shuddered as Madame Pomfrey caressed his now bare chest. “Such a delightful specimen,” she murmured as she raked her fingernails just a little too harshly down his sides. He flinched. “Such wonderful…responses…” The medi-witch picked up her wand, touched it to the waistband of Charlie’s trousers and whispered a spell. Charlie’s remaining clothes disappeared. “Did you write the letter I requested, Mr. Weasley?”
Charlie nodded shakily, his stomach trying it’s best to explosively expel any and every meal he had ever eaten. He swallowed it down forcefully, “Yes, Master.” She frowned and he corrected himself, “Polla. I wrote the letter, and posted it as you ordered.” An alarm went off in the distance. “Stay here,” she bit out as she stalked off to investigate.
Charlie hung his head, fighting the sobs that threatened to escape. He whispered to himself, “What have you done now, Charlie-boy?” He took a deep breath, relieved at the calm feeling that began to seep into his chest. He took another, and then another, just for good measure. “You got yourself into this, old boy. You have to see this through, at least for the present. Maybe later, you can figure a way out.”
Poppy slammed into her ‘war room’, as she liked to call it. The alarm signaled some minor happening at the Ministry building, in the Department of Mysteries. ‘Probably some elf cleaning the wrong item again,’ she reasoned. No matter, as whatever it was, one thing was clear – it was no threat to her or her plan. Still, she had better send someone to look into it. She took a pinch of floo powder and flung it into the fire, calling out “Percy Weasley!” Percy’s face appeared before her, “Yes, Master?”
“Department of Mysteries – something has happened and an alarm has been triggered. Investigate and report back to me.”
Percy nodded, agreeing quickly, “Yes, Master. I’ll report back at once.”
“See that you d…No, wait.” The medi-witch paused as she considered, “I am rather – unavailable – tonight. Report back to me first thing in the morning. I expect a thorough report!” She turned and stalked out of the room. Percy stayed in the fire a few moments longer, whispering futile help and support to the empty room, “Hang in there, Charlie. I’m trying.” The green flames flared, filling the small fireplace. When they had died down, Percy was gone.
Charlie was standing in the same spot as when she left - the ideal image of submission. Heat rose in the pit of her stomach, climbing lazily into her limbs as she gazed on his perfect, naked body. Well, perfect in every way but one. Poppy smiled viciously as she lifted his limp cock with her wand and whispered “phallus erectus”. Immediately, his penis grew and hardened. Setting her wand on the table, she reached down and grabbed his length with more force than necessary. “Good Boy,” she purred.
Present – Sunday Evening:
Minerva clucked her tongue as she paced around the sitting area in Severus’s quarters. She knew she should have just place a notification spell on the door, and waited in her own room for the Potions Master to return, but she just didn’t want to take the chance that the grumpy man would turn her away yet again. She had tried several times to talk to him about the things that needed to be done, but each time, he had growled, “Not now, Minerva!” and strode away. Then, of course, he and Albus had disappeared earlier today. Albus had even had the nerve – the audacity – to tell her that he was going shopping and planned to bring home quite a surprise for her. Really! Didn’t the man know her better? He couldn’t possibly believe that she would fall for that? Severus Snape, willingly spending an afternoon shopping with the flamboyant Headmaster, in the stores that she knew her lover was fond of? Foolish old man, to believe that she would fall for that load of – well, he should know by now. She harrumphed quite grouchily.
Walking over to the bookcase – again – she picked up the photo album that had been tempting her all evening. Cradling it to her chest, she marched over to Severus’s favorite chair and made herself comfortable. If he was going to make her wait, then she was going to wait in the best damned chair in the castle, thank you very much.
Present – Late Sunday Evening:
Remus choked as he tentatively reached out to Siri and the child. His hand only got halfway before he pulled it back and pressed it to his chest. “We, oh…you were…,” a whimper like sound escaped his throat. “…,” his mouth opened, but no sound came forth as he tried once again to put voice to the thoughts careening wildly in his head.
Sirius smiled softly, “Remus Black-Lupin, may I present your daughter, Salena Black-Lupin.” His eyes glittering with emotion, Sirius placed the little girl in her other father’s arms. Instinctively, Remus tightened his hold on the precious bundle and brought her up to his chest, one hand protectively curved around her small back. Salena sniffed her papa once, then again. She snuggled against him, placing her cheek against the pulse point in his neck. Tears fell unchecked down the werewolf’s face. Her little hand came up and patted his cheek gently.
“As touching as this is, I do believe that we need to leave – now.” Severus interrupted the moment. Sirius tore his eyes from his mate and their daughter, answering the Potions Master, “Yes, of course.” He ushered his family away from the destroyed archway and toward the rest of the group. Albus looked at the new arrivals, eyes twinkling wildly, and explained, “There have been a lot of changes recently. Our goblin friends here will transform you in order to allow us to leave undetected. Don’t be worried, it won’t hurt. It’s just a little awkward at first.”
The goblins stepped up and said their spells, turning each one, even little Salena into perfect pseudo-goblins. Remus had yet to relinquish his hold on his daughter. Sirius sighed in a happy-yet-sad way. He understood how Remus felt, but it still would have been nice to be able to properly greet his husband. He allowed himself to wallow in self-pity for a moment longer, then moved to join the others as they almost waddled out toward the door.
The group made it through the hallways, staircases and corridors with little problem. They were almost to the Goblin Entrance when Percy Weasley stepped out of the shadows in a move that was, ironically, perfectly Snape-like. “What, may I ask, is the meaning of this?” Percy actually drawled the sentence out. Severus tried to arch an eyebrow at him, but found it impossible in his current incarnation. Kagmir stepped up, becoming the spokes-goblin for the group.
“New goblins in the district, cousins of ours. We are taking them home.” Percy allowed a seemingly uninterested to flicker over the odd group. Three were definitely related, from what he could see. The others? They were familiar to him, but in a way he couldn’t define at the moment. ‘Family, indeed,’ he thought. Out loud, he answered, “Very well. Be on your way, then.” He stood to the side to let the group pass. The goblins filed by him in an odd, slow procession, with the goblin that appeared to be the oldest of the assembly bringing up the rear. Just as the aged creature drew even with the young wizard, he looked up, his twinkling blue eyes catching the wizard’s gaze. Percy’s eyes widened in shock and admiration. Chuckling, he called out softly, “Good night, Headmaster, Professors.”
The goblins paused slightly before continuing on their way. Percy chuckled again before heading toward the doors to the Ministry. He already knew that the Veil had been destroyed. His personal wards had told him that much. ‘Of course,’ he thought, ‘reports about the instability of the magic used to create the thing had been rampant for years.’ He laughed heartily. It seems that those reports would now work in his favor. Maybe he could work in a way to send Charlie on an assignment. He smiled as he thought of getting his brother away from the crazy woman. As for now, it was time to go home and see what Penelope was up to.
**************
Outside, the little group paused again at the sound of Cornelius Fudge. The former Minister could still be heard, ranting in front of the building. His shouts had changed a little during the time they had been in the Ministry, it seemed. Now, it was “Gilderoy, Gil, knew what he was about, after all, so it wasn’t a hardship. And the man had the stamina of ten trolls, thank Merlin. And he was gracious enough to let me top, twice even, but all the buggering in the world is not going to help if some idiot ‘Master’ has moved into my office.” Sniggering, the goblins made their way back to the alley outside the bank.
After returning the wizards (and witches) to their true state, Kagmir, Nedmid, and Griphook bade them farewell, and returned to their own homes. “I believe there is some discussion that is required before we do anything else.” Albus practically glowed with satisfaction and enthusiasm. “If you would all place a hand on the portkey. It’s a little tight, so make sure you get a good hold. I didn’t quite anticipate this many when I charmed the device.” He held out a muggle remote control. Severus, Lily and James each grabbed part of the remote. Sirius came up behind Remus and Salena, looping his left arm protectively around both of his loves. Moving in closer, he dropped a kiss on his daughter’s tired little head as well as kissed his lover’s neck as he whispered, “Grab tight, Remy, but don’t worry. I’ve got both of you.” Remus and Sirius both extended their right hands and grabbed the odd item. Dumbledore, still holding his part, tapped the control lightly with his wand and called out, “Snake pit!”
Present – Just a few moments after the portkey was activated:
Minerva nose twitched as she slept in Severus’s big, comfy chair. Her parchment list crinkled slightly as she shifted slightly. The photo album, filled with photographs of Severus and ‘Alex’ lay almost forgotten to one side. She was so comfortable and in such a sound sleep that she didn’t notice the group’s arrival.
Severus sneered at the jolly old man, “My quarters, Albus? Why did it have to be my personal quarters?” Albus smiled benevolently at the man, his eyes twinkling with the effect of a muggle strobe light, “Everyone at Hogwart’s knows you have the most comfortable arrangements, Severus. And, I do believe we need to be comfortable for this discussion.” Severus sighed, wiping his hand wearily over his face. He knew he could not win this one; there was no use in trying. “Very well. I’m getting a drink. Anyone else?”
After filling everyone’s drink request, the group started finding their seats for the meeting. Lily and James settled on the large chaise near the bookshelves. The Headmaster took the chair by the fireplace (convenient for those long fire-calls), while the Canine family settled in on the sofa. Not looking, Severus started to sit in his chair when the Headmaster suddenly cried out, “No! Severus, stop!” Instincts as they were, Severus immediately obeyed. The old man scurried over and scooped up the tabby napping in the chair. He turned a scolding look at the feline, “Minerva! You know that can get you into a lot of trouble. Poor man almost squashed you, you bad little pussy.” Black and Lupin both gagged slightly while Lily snorted and hid her face in James’s (who was rather mortified) shoulder. Severus made note to never make Wolfsbane again and to find Lupin during the next full moon. Albus gently placed the cat on the floor and waited for her to morph back into his lover of more than three decades. She turned a scathing look on her mate, but whatever retort she was about to make was lost as she realized who the others in the room were. Her hand flew to her throat, “Oh, my! James, Lily, Sirius! You’re here? You’re really here?” Her eyes pleaded with Albus, begging him to tell her it was, indeed, true.
Albus chuckled as he took her lightly in his arms. “I told you I would bring back a surprise. Well, woman? Are you surprised?” Minerva rolled her eyes at him as she smacked his arm. “Only you, Albus.” She quickly untangled herself from the randy man and gave her former students quick, but thorough, hugs. She noticed the sleeping baby, still held snugly in Remus’s arms. “And who is this little treasure?” She stroked the girl’s tawny hair.
Remus opened his mouth, but found himself to still be speechless. He cast a look at Sirius, who grinned broadly and answered, “This is Salena Black-Lupin.” He put his arm around Remus and pulled him closer, “Our daughter.” Minerva laughed delightedly, her hands clapping together in front of her face, “Wonderful! Well done, boys, well done!”
Severus leaned back in his chair, putting his feet up. This was still his personal quarters, and it looked as if everyone was tucking in for the long haul, so he intended to be comfortable, and perhaps a little on the way to drunk in the meantime. He took a long drink from the glass in his hand. Swallowing, he sighed loudly, gathering the attention of those in the room. “If we could – please – get down to the business at hand,” he ground out. “Oh, Yes, yes, of course!” Albus answered.
Past – Saturday Afternoon:
James shook his head in disbelief. “Our son, in love with…,” he sighed and shook his head again. “Is there anything we can do?” His eyes were hopeful even though his heart told him differently. Lily almost clonked him on the head again. “Severus is his soul-mate, James. He is the one person that Harry can truly be himself and be happy with. Anything else, well, it just wouldn’t be enough.” She could see that he just was not getting the point, so she decided to change tack a little, “It would be like me marrying Reginald Thorpe instead of you.” His eyes widened. “But we, I love…,” he sputtered. “No man could ever love you as much as I love you. And You love me, right. We, well damn it all Lily, we’re just meant to be.” He glowered at her. She smiled brightly, “And that is exactly the way it is for Harry and Severus.”
“…Damn!”
Past – Saturday Afternoon:
Severus regained his composure enough to ask the house-elf for food for the two of them. He waited until the elf had delivered the food before trying to continue any type of conversation.
Seating themselves at the small table, Severus, watching his husband’s face carefully, began, “This thing with our wands, it proves Lily’s theory beyond a shadow of a doubt, Harry. We are two halves of one whole…” Harry broke in and finished the sentence, grinning ear to ear the whole time, “destined to be together.” Severus tilted his head in affirmation. “Although our bonding and marriage,” he picked up the scroll from the table, “has come considerably earlier in our relationship than I would have generally preferred, well, I cannot say that I am upset about it. In fact, I am rather…happy…about being irrevocably tied to you.”
Harry grinned again, “And I think I am rather happy about being married to you, also. Although,” Severus frowned at Harry’s regretful tone, “I don’t think it would be wise for us to tell anyone else of our relationship just yet. I mean, we don’t know what we have changed or what it could change, do we?” Sev relaxed visibly. “You’re quite right, Alex.” He stressed the false name. “I also think I have fallen entirely too easily into the habit of calling you by your real name. I don’t want to slip up and cause any problems. I think I should only use ‘Alex’ from now on.”
Harry thought for a moment while he chewed on the roasted duck. He shook his head slowly as he swallowed and took a long drink from his glass of pumpkin juice. “How about a compromise?” He offered. “I’ll let you call me ‘Alex’ anytime you like,” he held his hand up to stop Severus’s eager acceptance, “as long as it is not during our…intimate moments. I find I do not want to hear ‘Alex’ or any name other than ‘Harry’ during our lovemaking.”
Severus agreed readily. He couldn’t do otherwise, really. He could only imagine how he would feel to hear his Harry call out another name, even if it was one he was temporarily using, in the throes of passion. “So be it. ‘Alex’ everywhere except the bedroom.” Harry laughed. “But darling,” he lowered his eyes and deepened his voice as he teased, “we haven’t even made it to the bedroom yet!” Severus laughed and continued chuckling as they both finished their meal.
Moving back to the sitting room, they both stopped, wondering where to sit to continue their conversation. Harry, clutching their certificate in his hand, glanced at the sofa. He was sure he would never make it through the talk if they sat on the sofa. He was already hard and aching just thinking about it. Severus seemed to be in a similar predicament, as he tried – unsuccessfully – to adjust himself without drawing his husband’s attention. Finally, he gave up and adjusted his stiff flesh and throbbing balls. He captured Harry’s elbow and steered him to a very large, plush leather chair. Severus sat down, then pulled Harry down into his lap. Each man wriggled a little, trying to get into just the right position. They both moved a little more than needed, each taking an extraordinary amount of satisfaction in rubbing against the other as they became situated.
Present – Early Monday Morning:
The door shut firmly behind Charlie as he (finally) left Poppy Pomfrey’s quarters. He glanced back cautiously at the door with fear in his eyes even as his feet carried away from the foul woman’s presence. He felt dirty, filthy to his soul. She had used spells on him that kept him hard, tricked his mind into thinking she was someone else, and hexed him with unthinkable and unforgivable curses as he came, making his body convulse uncontrollably as he spilled himself inside her despicable body over and over again. Finally, she was sated - sexually, at least. The real torture started when he was too exhausted and weak to fight back. She raped his mind, discovering his fantasies and insecurities. She used him as some type of tester for her sick experiments, forcing potions down his throat and spells, almost literally, up his arse. He was covered with blood – blood that flowed freely from the many knife wounds she joyously caused during the sickeningly rough sex, from the furrows etched into his skin by her teeth and fingernails as she fought for her own completion time and again, and from the numerous dark spells she had cast on him when she discovered who he really desired. Then, when her fun was over, she commanded him to return at midnight and spat him from her quarters with only his pants to cover his wounds.
He ran, as fast as his torn and abused body could handle to the only place he knew he could be safe, however temporarily it may be. He knew now what a mistake he had made – it was too late for himself, but he could save the others. He saw her mind while she plundered through his. He knew her plans, her dreams of grandeur. He rounded the corner just as the portrait opened. He tried to stop, but his reflexes were too slow. He crashed into the one he was looking for, the one he had secretly wanted for the last year.
Strong hands gripped him gently, steadying him, telling him that he was finally safe. He flung his arms around the now-slender waist and sobbed, “Neville!”
Present – Sunday Night, around Midnight:
James took control of the situation. He gently nudged Lily out of his arms and stood up, crossing the room to where Severus sat. He frowned and the space between his eyes creased as he thought. Lily held her breath. Slowly, a smile spread over James’s face and he extended his hand to Severus, who was quite shocked. “Snape, I want to apologize for all the mean, nasty, and dangerous things that I have done to you over the years. You did not deserve it, and I was a prick for even thinking about it.” He paused as Severus jerkily climbed to his feet. Also, seeing as you are my son-in-law, I would like to officially and formally welcome you to the family.”
“WHAT!” Sirius exploded in rage. Before he could do much else, he was hit with four spells – 2 very strong silencing spells from Remus (who didn’t want to disturb his daughter) and Minerva, a mild binding spell from Albus, and a extremely powerful wandless, and wordless stunning spell from Lily.
“Shut it, Siri. Let James speak. He’ll explain everything in all due time.” Lily’s green gaze bore into the man’s furious eyes. She looked over toward Remy and Salena. “If you promise to behave, we will remove most of the spells. I do believe a volume-lowering spell and the binding spell should be left in place, for Salena’s sake, of course.”
Severus extended his hand and took James. “Apology accepted.” He didn’t like it, but it was for Harry. He had long ago accepted the truth that he would do anything for Harry. He’d already sold his soul to the devil for the boy; he could live with Harry’s relatives and friends, as long as Harry loved him. The two men shook hands as the Headmaster removed (and replaced) the spells on Sirius. Lily got up and scurried over to her son-in-law, gripping him in a very motherly hug. “Thank you for taking such good care of our boy, Severus, then and now,” she whispered. Releasing the decidedly uncomfortable Potions Master, she latched onto her husband and pulled him back to their seats. They were almost settled when Severus gave in to his truly demented sense of humor, and asked, rather dryly, “Does this mean I can call you ‘Mum and Dad’?”
James’s head snapped up as he bristled at the question. The tension was lost, however, as everyone (including Sirius) laughed at the question. Severus stated, “I would settle for being allowed to call you by your given names, but only if you call me by mine, also.” He leveled a glare at the canine family, then softened it, “That also goes for you, Bl…Sirius, Remus.”
Remus answered for them both, whether his husband liked it or not, “Of course, Severus. We would not have it any other way.”
“Splendid! Harry will be most pleased when he returns. Now, Sirius, don’t get upset. I will explain everything, but it will take a few moments to do so. For now, just sit back and listen.” He reached into his robe pocket, “Lemon Drop? No, alright. Now, to begin…”
The debatably wise old man began the tale, revealing the details of Harry’s disappearance, his time in the past as Alexander Harrison, his relationship (private parts left private, of course) with Severus, the spells Griphook had found and how they retrieved the three from the veil. Everyone sat very still in a contemplative silence as he spoke, listening – absorbing – the facts from the wizard. For several minutes afterward, no one spoke, until Minerva broke the peace with her need to have her curiosity sated.
“If the retrieval spells were only on Sirius, how did James and Lily come back?” Everyone looked to the older couple, leaning forward as they listened intently. Each person, in his or her own way, had wondered at that. Albus did not know. However, to buy time to come up with a plausible explanation, he popped a lemon drop into his mouth and silently cast the spell to make his eyes twinkle in an omniscient way. He was about to plop a second lemon treat into his mouth when Fawkes appeared over Severus’s chair. The fabled bird landed in the Potions Master’s lap despite his best efforts to shoo the creature away. “Severus, let Fawkes be,” Minerva called out. “He is going to tell you, if you would be still!”
Severus stopped. He sneered at the bird. Severus crossed his arms and almost sulked, “Fine. Albus, tell your bloody overgrown chicken to hurry up, then.” Fawkes nipped the pouting man’s hand with his beak, then walked up until his face touched Severus’s. Fawkes trilled softly, letting the teardrop fall. Severus closed his eyes, a look of pain crossing his face before he could stand to open them again. Fawkes bumped his head against the man’s cheek and took up, hovering for a moment before bursting into flame and out of the room. Everyone looked expectantly at him. He opened his mouth, but couldn’t make the sound he needed. He took a drink and tried again. “I…I…” He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. “The Headmaster placed the spells on you four, that is, Lily, James, Remus and Sirius, as a precaution not long after Harry appeared in the past. Fawkes had told him, not details, but the basics of what would happen. Albus obliviated the memory of it to protect…the future events. Fawkes says that,” He swallowed, “…that my desire to make Harry happy – that is what brought James and Lily back. When we performed the spell, we were supposed to remember the reasons we were retrieving Bl…Sirius. All I could think of was Harry. How he looked when, as Alex, he saw the two of you that last time. I wanted to be able to give his family back to him, even if…” He stopped, unable to go on, but it was perfectly fine. Everyone there understood the animosity that had existed between the Marauders and Severus Snape.
Sirius began gesturing wildly, pointing to his mouth and throat, mouthing words that no one was sure they wanted to hear. The binding spell only held him to the seat next to Remus; it did not bind his arms. Albus hesitantly removed the silencing and binding spell, but kept his wand out – just in case. Sirius rushed over to Severus, falling at the edge of the chair in order to kneel and look him in the face. “I never thought I would say this to you, and I still don’t know if I can accept you, but thank you. Thank you for helping to bring my best friends back, thank you for helping to bring me back, and thank you for lov…caring enough about my godson to do everything that you have done for the past twenty years.” Shakily, Severus extended his hand toward Sirius. “I apologize – for everything. I believe it would be best if we tried to make amends, if only for Harry’s sake. Truce?”
Sirius nodded tersely, and gave Severus’s hand a quick shake. He rose and moved back toward his husband and child. Remus wiped a tear from his eye, as did James, Lily and Minerva. Albus upped the spell to ‘Blinding Twinkle #9’ and smiled cheekily, “Well, I do believe we need to get you young people settled for the night. Some of us have children to teach in a few short hours.”
Present – Very, Very Early Monday Morning:
The reunited Marauders (sans the turn-tail rat, but he didn’t count anymore) stood up to take their leave. Severus stood also, moving to show them out like the proper host. Suddenly, Remus stopped, causing Sirius to run into him from behind – which in turn caused Lily to bump into Sirius and James to bump into Lily. “Remy, love – what’s wrong?” Sirius moved around to check on his mate. The man had yet to relinquish his hold on their daughter. Remus had a look of horrified fear and dread on his face. “Salena, does she…is she…like me?” The werewolf prayed to every deity he had ever heard of, ‘please, don’t let her be like me…’ Behind him, James chuckled and Lily tittered. Sirius smiled.
“No, love. Our daughter is not a werewolf.” His smile was just a little too big, however. “What?” Remus caught himself before he yelled and woke the little girl. “What is it?” Sirius had the grace to look sheepishly at the group before answering. “She’s an animagus, only, right now, her changes are only at the full moon. She’ll be able to control them when she gets older.” He smiled apologetically at the worried father. Remus didn’t drop it, “And…” When Sirius didn’t seem to want to answer, he ground out, eyes flashing dangerously, “What. Is. She?” Somewhere in the distance, James chuckled and Lily tittered again. Sirius mumbled, “cckerspnl.”
“What?” The werewolf snapped at his newly-restored mate. Sirius cleared his throat and tried again, “Cocker Spaniel.” Severus couldn’t stop the grin that took over his face.
