Chapter 19
Chapter 19
“Draco, come out here, please. There are some things we need to discuss.”
Draco came out timidly when Albus called him, entering the living area and worried he was going to get smacked for doing so. Remus was also there, already sitting and Draco stiffened, but only until Albus pulled him to his chair, letting him choose where he’d like to sit. He chose his father’s lap and got comfortable. Draco was a little stunned that the werewolf was here, even more stunned when Severus walked through the portrait and occupied the chair half way between.
He frowned, and looked at his Godfather who sighed softly and closed his eyes, “I’ve made a mistake Draco, one I swore I would never do. I’ve allowed you to become caught in the middle of my disagreements with Professor Lupin and it was the one problem I wanted to avoid. What happened in the past is my past, Draco, not your’s. I don’t expect you to avenge my youth and Remus certainly can’t hurt me now.”
Frown deepening, “But it does, I can see that it does. Every time you look at him you flinch.”
And again that snideness entered his voice when he said ‘him’. Albus looked over the top of Draco’s head with an expression as if to say ...See? Severus sighed and nodded to himself, “Be that as it may, Draco. This is a problem that Remus and I will work out. You are not involved in this.”
Scowling, “You’re my godfather. If someone hurts you then they hurt me. If you don’t like someone then
I won’t-...”
“I don’t care for Potter...are you going to act against him in my stead?”
Draco froze for a moment before squirming uncomfortably, “That’s...that’s different...”
“How, Draco? How is it different?”
“Because...you don’t know Harry. You judge him because of his father-...”
“And you judge Remus because of me.”
Slapping his hands over his ears, “You’re trying to confuse me!”
Severus rolled his eyes and grumbled at his godson’s childishness, “You’re already confused without my
help...”
Albus was actually amused, “Shall we send him back to bed and discuss this further?”
Lowering his hands with a pout, “I’m right here, you know?”
Albus looked surprised, “Really? I was convinced I had a four year old in my lap.”
A blush creeped up Draco’s face and he stared at his hands, “Point taken.”
Lupin blinked again, marveling at the sheer complexity of this boy’s personality. Or maybe he was just
getting old, “So, are you ready to listen to us like a young adult, or do you need more time in your room to think about it?”
Sighing with resignation, reminded once again that even with his privileges he was just a child and Albus would make him mind, “I’ll listen...” He perked up at a thought, “I take bribes...is there chocolate in this bargain?” Severus slapped a hand over his face and Remus started laughing.

Monday hadn’t been any better but Tuesday had promise. When Remus had asked for a volunteer Draco had raised his hand slowly and demonstrated the correct form and posture perfectly. The others started to follow his lead, tentatively asking questions and practicing their defenses against their neighbors.
After the class had ended, Lupin slumped on his desk, sitting up when a knock broke through his thoughts. Glancing up to see Hermione, “Miss Granger?”
She nodded quietly, moving forward slowly, “Professor...”
Her eyes lost focus for a moment and he frowned to himself, “May I help you with something?”
Her head tilted a little, “It depends on your point of you. I think at this point it is I that can help
you.” Her chin firmed, “I’ve had friends before...still do. But my friendship with Draco is apart from that. There are no conditions to that, save that I will be sure no one harms him...as he does for me.”
She smiled a little to herself, sorting through her emotions carefully. She cared a great deal for the blond. And he for her, she could tell. Perhaps even more than he did for Cassie. And it just made her happier for it, “Miss Granger?”
She sighed before coming to a decision, “I will set aside my animosity of you for the sake of Draco and the Headmaster but understand that we will never be more than formal with one another.”
That startled Lupin a bit. He had thought that Draco was relaxing around him because of the beginnings of trust. Or at least that had been his hope. Perhaps he was mistaken and it had everything to do with Albus, “The Headmaster-...”
“Draco informed us that his problem with you wasn’t so much to do with what happened that day so much as his godfather. I understand. I’d feel the same way about my family if someone made them unhappy. But, the Headmaster has asked that we set aside our feelings for the sake of the school and I will agree to that.” A glint flashed in her eyes, “And only that. Gryffindors are loyal to their friends, Professor...and though you were a Gryffindor you weren’t loyal to your’s.”
She turned on her heel, walking briskly for the door before pausing, not looking back, “And one other matter. Potion or not. Good intentions or not. If you hurt him, know that I always carry silver.” And with a swirl of her robes she was gone. Lupin shivered to himself. They were just children, but they were absolutely terrifying. He was becoming truly frightened of what would happen when they grew up.
I have lots more, but that's all I'm posting for now. I require reviews for my dinner. Hungry!!!
