Chapter 17: Time to Have a Talk

Chapter 17: Time to Have a Talk

Time: Fifteen minutes later.

The group is seated in a rather comfortable room at the OUBLIETTE. The burgundy room has a number of winged back chairs that are circled around the roaring fireplace. Remus, Harry, Neville, and Ron are already seated when Colin leads Draco into the room and in front of the fireplace. Draco takes the seat nearest to the fireplace. Colin snaps his fingers and everyone suddenly has a tumbler of Ogden’s Firewhiskey in his hand. Then Colin takes a seat next to Draco. Everyone looks a little uncomfortable for a few minutes. It is Harry to breaks the ice.

“You don’t look well, Malfoy,” starts Harry.

“Being on the run is not as romantic as they make it,” retorts Draco with a wry expression.

Now everyone is REALLY uncomfortable.

Harry begins again, “I have been thinking about the first time we met. I have been wondering if things would have turned out differently if I had took your hand in friendship.”

“Then you wouldn’t have been friends with Weasley here or your friend Granger,” contends Draco in a tired voice.

“Maybe, maybe not. Who knows what would have happened. I have not done well Divination, but I would have liked the opportunity to acquainted myself with you before things turned to shit. I just don’t know how to say it any other way,” concedes Harry.

“Well while we are having this heart to heart. I suppose that some of my professed ideas about the world have proven to be completely incorrect…yes I think that will be the word I use for now. I have no desire to follow a crazed lunatic who has no issue with sending me to my death. In short I would rather be in a world with you than Voldermort.

My mother and my uncle Severus have informed me of Voldermort’s background. Severus has also told me of his. This information flies in the face of everything that I have been taught all of my life, but the evidence is apparent. Being a Pureblood Malfoy has been the cornerstone all of my life. But for the last few months I have been educated in the realities of our world. Trust me I am no fool. I would rather put my hand in with Severus, you, and Granger than Voldermort and his lot any day.

I have my duty to family line and inheritance to protect. My father is in Azkaban and when he dies, and then it will up to me to continue our line. Define purity! Is it the inbreeding the produced Voldermort. I mean he may be half-muggle, but the Pureblood side of his is crazy as hell from inbreeding to keep the blood Salazar Slytherin PURE! When I look at my own line I cringe. I have no siblings like the Weasleys. My parents had to use magical means to produce me due to the inbreeding of their own lines.
No, I have allowed my father’s mistakes to rule my life for too long. What do you need me to do to prove my loyalty?” finishes Draco with a deep and tired breath.

Ron replies, “You put some thought into this change of allegiance.”

“Of course, I have lots of time to some thinking drinking,” snorts Draco.

“I don’t like you,” says Ron flatly.

“I don’t care,” replies Draco in a very calm and even tone.

Ron turns to Harry and says, “Well, I trust him. If he was going to try and hoodwink us, then he would at least put effort into the deception.”

Remus watches the exchange for a minute. He finally asks Draco, “Where is your mother, Narcissa. When was the last time you saw Severus?”

Draco sips his Firewhiskey. He then steadies himself and comments, “Mother has rooms here at OUBLIETTE as does Severus. I saw them a short while ago.” He looks to Colin for a moment.

Colin steps in and explains to Remus, “Severus provides the OUBLIETTE with Wolfsbane and other Potions in exchange for certain considerations.”

Remus thinks for a minute and fingers his glass while the boys sip their FireWhiskey. “What other consideration?” he asks Colin.

Colin straightens up in the chair and readjusts his jacket, then says, “The agreement Severus has with myself and Malvenia is strictly confidential. We don’t just go discussing someone’s business with everyone.”

“Let me put it this way,” refocuses Remus. “What you are doing for him that makes you so uncomfortable?”

“It’s nothing illegal, just private,” smoothes Colin.

While this exchange was occurring, Malvenia has quietly entered the room. She walks over to Colin’s chair and sits on the arm of it.

“Colin, tell him. I think the children of Hogwarts should be educated as the responsibilities of their Potion’s Master. And he damn well deserves the title,” sneers Malvenia.

Colin clears his throat and continues, “In exchange for Severus’ services, we take care of his mother, Eileen.

Everyone becomes silent. Neville finds his voice first.

“Can we visit her? Is she sick?” he finds himself asking.

Colin looks at his drink and refills everyone’s glass with a snap of his fingers. “This is where things get a little complicated.”
