Chapter 2: Snape’s Recommendation

Hermione headed to the dungeons for her appointment with Severus Snape. She was early to avoid risking his not being there. A great deal of newfound respect and admiration had opened up within her regarding her former potions professor and the glint in his eyes earlier at lunch was something she wanted to see more of. She also admitted to herself that she wanted to see more of the less buttoned up Severus Snape. She was fascinated by how relaxed he had looked at lunch. She peeked in the potions classroom, but didn’t see him there. She proceeded to his office but was stopped at the door by a murmur of voices within. One of the voices was clearly Professor Snape; the other was female. She flattened herself against the dungeon wall and peeked into the office, hiding in the shadows. Professor Morrigan was in his office. Not only was she in his office, she was looking through his bookcase, looking cool and comfortable in Muggle jeans and a sweatshirt. That wasn’t what shocked Hermione, however. What surprised her was that Severus stood behind her with his arms wrapped around her waist.

Ariah Morrigan selected a book and turned around, still in Severus’ arms. She smiled at him and moved closer to him. She lifted her head and Severus captured her lips in a deep and tender kiss. Hermione gasped from the hallway, hoping that they didn’t hear her. Severus ran his hands down Ariah’s back and gently squeezed her buttocks as she deepened their kiss, running her hands through his hair as she did. The sight of the two teachers responding to one another with such passion held Hermione spellbound. She never dreamed that her potions professor had a private life, much less a love life. She felt a pang of something she couldn’t place strike her. Much to her surprise, she realized it was jealousy. She had always harbored something akin to a crush on Severus Snape, at one point wanting to melt his icy exterior and feel his arms around her. But of course, it had never happened. Part of her realized that by going to the dungeons early that afternoon, she had hoped to be able to spend more time with the handsome professor. Hermione sighed. The couple in the office broke their kiss.

“So, Sev, what are your plans for the rest of the day?” asked Ariah.

“I have to meet Miss Granger here at 4:00 to discuss a recommendation for an advanced potions program,” he replied, stroking her cheek.

“I trust that we’re going to the Quidditch match tonight?”

“Of course, my dear. Slytherin vs. Gryffindor, with the stadium all lit up? I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”

“Mmmm,” agreed Ariah, wrapping her arms around his neck and kissing him again, “Why oh why can’t I get enough of kissing you today?”

Severus returned her kiss, “Guess it’s just my lucky day.”

“Oh, you haven’t experienced lucky yet today.”

“Well, I only have about a half hour scheduled with Miss Granger,” said Severus playfully, “I trust that we can find a way in which to while away the time until the match tonight.”

“Oh, I’m sure we can,” smiled Ariah, “oops, it’s almost 4:00. Let me let you get ready to talk to the Granger girl.”

“Going back to your ivory tower?”

Ariah laughed, “Ivory tower? Hardly. Sharing a tower with Sibyll Trelawny takes away from it being a sanctuary, what with the prospect of running into her on the way home at night and hearing about how I’m destined to be with a tall dark handsome man. Has she NOT had her eyes open all this time? A prophecy is hardly a prophecy when it’s shagging two floors below you on an almost nightly basis.”

Severus chuckled, “Come now, my love, Sibyll’s been correct a few times in her life. So she’s a little late with this particular vision.”

Ariah laughed, her laugh brightening up the office, “I was wondering if I could just hang at your place, maybe slip into a bath and relax with a nice glass of wine…”

“Absolutely,” replied Severus, holding her tightly for a moment before letting her go.

“See you in a little while?” she asked.

“Oh, I’ll be there,” he replied.

Hermione quietly backed into the hallway so that it would appear she had just arrived. She felt her pulse speed up as she watched the two professor’s playful interchange. Taking a deep breath, she knocked on the office door. Both Severus and Ariah looked up. Severus greeted her with a slight scowl, Ariah with a warm smile.

“Miss Granger…Hermione,” said Ariah, “so lovely to see you again. I understand that you’re looking to participate in the advanced potions program at University. I’m sure you’ll do wonderfully.”

“Thank you Professor Morrigan, it’s nice to see you back,” said Hermione, biting back the stab of jealousy she felt.

“Well, I’m off. Good luck with your meeting, Hermione, ignore the scowl, I think it’s stuck there.” Ariah playfully grinned at Severus and much to Hermione’s surprise, he smiled back. He really has a nice smile, she thought, too bad he doesn’t use it more…or does he now?

Ariah slipped out the door to the dungeon, discreetly using the other entrance to Severus’ quarters. Severus motioned for Hermione to sit down in the chair across from his desk, while he sat at the desk.

“So, Miss Granger,” he said, “you need a recommendation for the advanced program?”

“Yes sir,” she replied.

“And why do you want a recommendation from me?”

“To be honest, sir, you’re one of the best potions masters out there. You are so well ecteected in the academic circles and are considered a hero for your efforts in the war. I just believe that a recommendation from you would carry a great deal of weight.”

“And why should I give you one?”

“I did well in your classes and I think I’m a good candidate for the program. I wouldn’t sully your good name or reputation.”

“No, Miss Granger, you’re not a good candidate for the program,” he said, fixing his dark look on her.

Hermione was startled; she didn’t expect to hear that even though she knew she was no favorite of Professor Snape’s.

“But Professor, I always did well in potions,” she protested.

“And as usual, Miss Hermione Granger does not allow me to complete a thought,” said Severus, a sly grin pulling up the corners of his mouth, “I was going to say that you’re not a good candidate for the program, you’re an excellent candidate and I would be honored to give you this recommendation,” he slid over a sealed parchment, “I take it that Dr. Troxbury is still the head of the department there?”

“Yes,” said Hermione, eyes shining from the compliment he had paid her, “he is.”

“Give him this and tell him if he has any issues to please owl me.”

“Yes sir,” she said, following his lead and standing up.

He walked her to the door of his office and on a whim; she stood on her toes and kissed his cheek, flushing crimson at realizing what she had done.

“Um…I’m sorry Professor, I…thanks. I mean, thank you sir,” she stammered.

Severus glared at her, but his eyes were far from hard and cold and she thought she saw that glimmer of humor in them again, “You’re quite welcome Miss Granger, but kindly refrain from kissing me again, even though I know it will be difficult.”

Hermione blushed again and hurried up the steps from the dungeons. Severus grinned and shook his head. He’d always secretly rather liked Miss Granger, found her refreshing once she had stopped waving her hand furiously in the air with every question he asked. He had to admit that he also enjoyed seeing her tongue-tied following her unexpected display. Severus shut out the lights in his office and headed toward his quarters and his waiting love.
