Cessa's Visit

“Cassiopeia, Regulas, your school letters are here. Your letter is rather thick, girl. Are you in trouble?” Mother says as we come into the dining room for breakfast the middle of July. My brother and I take seats opposite each other at the table and Mother hands us our letters. We open them and remove the parchment from inside. Inside mine, I find my seventh year supply list, a permission form for a trip to France, a permission form for a tip to Egypt, and a letter from the headmaster. I hand the seventh year trip forms to father who reads them over and signs them before handing them back to me. I place both to the side of my plate and begin reading the note from the headmaster over my eggs benedict. When I reach the second line, it takes all my Pureblood training to keep from spitting out my food or choking on it.

“What is it?” My father asks, gaining my mother’s attention.

“I’ve been made Quidditch Captain, as well as Head Girl.” I tell them, pouring the two glistening badges out of the envelope, they had appeared there after I started reading as the letter said they would.

“It appears you are not as much of a shame to this family as I had thought you were, girl.” Mother tells me as she takes the badges to examine them. “I didn’t even know you played Quidditch. What position?”

                “I’ve played since I was a second year Mother. I’m a chaser.”

“Well, I am pleased that you have received both of these honors. Who is the Head Boy?”

“It doesn’t say.” I tell her finishing the letter. “Only that we will meet in the head’s compartment on the train with Professor Dumbledore before we discuss how to handle the prefects for the year.”

“Well, let us know as soon as you can who it is.” Father says. I nod and we finish our meal in silence.

“Carls?” I look up from my book that’s I’m reading in the back yard to see Cissy standing in the doorway. I smile at her and wave her over to me.

“What’s up?” I ask dropping that horrid Pureblood speak. She smiles and flops, rather ungracefully and VERY unladylike onto the sun recliner I’m laying on.

“Our parents are ridiculous. I was just informed by the four of them that I have to marry Andy’s betrothed!” I pet her hair reassuringly and let her vent on how much she can’t stand Lucius.

“At least you aren’t being forced to marry your own brother.” I tell her when she stops for air. She looks at me blinking a moment before it sinks in what I said.

                “No!? What?”

“My baby brother confessed his undying love to me and my parents decided that we would marry; a triad bond with Malfoy’s idiot cousin.”

“Rocque?” I nod, tears coming to my eyes. My cousin, more like a sister, sits up and pulls me into her lap cradling me and trying to calm me.

“I would rather die an old maid than be forced into this.”

“Is there someone you would rather have? If it is a better match, more powerful, Aunt Walburga will jump at the opportunity.”

“There is, and it would be a more powerful match. But it will never happen.”

                “Why not?”

“It’s Lupin. He’s been round the house every summer and Christmas for years because he’s Siri’s friend. I fell in love with him.”

“And while it would be a powerful match, Aunt Walburga would never allow it because the Lupin’s are light.” Cissy says sadly.

“Exactly. I’ve had to do the unthinkable though.”

                “What’s that?”

“Mother and Father want Regulas and I to conceive a child, part of the pre-bonding ritual that died out in most families a hundred years ago. I can’t sleep with my brother, I placed him under Imperius Curse. I make him wank every night to the illusion that he is having sex with me.”

                “Does he fight it?”

“He has no idea that I’m doing it.”

“What if he ever does? Or the Imprio breaks somehow?”

“He will rape me. I’ve seen it in his mind. If I don’t give him what he wants, he’ll take it by force.”

“Have you done anything to prepare for that?” I nod.

“A severing curse on my vagina. If he ever comes to completion inside of me, his bits will be permanently removed. This is the only thing that makes me happy about my affinity.”

“I’m sure. What about a child?”

“I’m sure it will happen if he ever does manage to get inside of me. Mother has been force feeding me fertility potions twice a day since the engagement was decided. It’s been a month already, and I’m certain that I’ll be forced to take them at school.”

“How? You can’t be compelled or Impiriused.”

“My elf can, Kreature would never hurt me on purpose but if Mother orders him or compels him to do it, he will make sure I do. “

“And you hate it when he gets hurt because of something you do.”

“Exactly. At least I’m head girl so I won’t be in the dorms where he can get at me constantly.”

“Well, a small silver lining after all. I just wish I was you right now.” I laugh.

“I would GLADLY marry Lucy and let you have my brother and Rocque. You think Mother would go for it?”

“And actually have you pay your dowry? Never. Aunt Walberga is MANY things, and cheap is one of them.”

“I know, she won’t spend a knut if she can help it. And for a high society, wealthy Pureblood, that is an unheard of trait. That’s why we don’t have parties and balls except Mother and Father’s anniversary, and Siri and my, and Regs birthdays.”

“And the only reason for your birthday ball, is so that you can make the desired connections that will propel you to the height of glory.”

“Exactly. I heard my Mother telling Father that had he been inclined to take a wife, I would have been given to the Dark Lord first.” I tell her as we cuddle on the sun lounge. “If he knew of my affinity, he would have jumped at the opportunity.”

“Good thing only your parents, your siblings, Malfoy, and I know about it then.”

“That is too many people knowing for my liking though. I would rather it was only you and Siri and Malfoy that knew. You and Siri would keep my secrets even if it killed you to do so and I would still need Malfoy to tutor me.”

“How is that going by the way?”

“Would you like to see what I can do with fiendfyre?” Her eyes widen and I take the dreadful hat off her head that her mother INSISTS is high fashion, but really looks like one of the Malfoy’s albino peacocks took a shit on her head and then someone puked into the mess. I set it on the grass a couple feet way and blinked, casting the fire on it. The creatures of the fire eat it quickly and before they can spread to the grass, I put it out, not even a charred place on the ground.

“Wow! You could be a Dark Lord in your own right Carls. You should oppose him, then your parents won’t force you to do anything.”

“I can’t Cissy. I may have an affinity for the dark, but I’m not dark. If I was, I would never have fallen in love with Remus.”

“You do have a point there.” I nod and sigh, looking up at the clouds drifting lazily by and wishing I could have an easy life like that.

“Have you heard from Siri?” Cissy asks after a while of silence.

“Not since he left.” I trail my fingers lightly over the grass as my arm hangs off the lounge chair. “He hates me.”

                “He loves you.”

“No. He thinks I betrayed him. He asked me to go with him and I told him I couldn’t, even though I wanted to.”

“Even so, he could never hate you Carls. You two are two halves of a whole. Before first year, you two were inseparable. And over summers and Christmas, if you had a nightmare, no matter that he never really spoke to you or associated with you anymore, Siri would still come to your bed to calm you and stay the rest of the night.”

“You didn’t see his face when he left here, Cissy. I destroyed him, he will always hate me now because I choose my parent’s praise over my twin’s love.”

                “That can’t be true.”

“It is.” I sigh and roll so that I fall the seven inches to the soft grass and lay on my stomach, not caring if I ruin my dress. Kreature will have it looking as good as new by the next time I wear it. “I should have gone with him.”

“And then we would never be allowed to speak to each other again! I would go insane. So would you.”

“I hate all these damned rules. I want to go visit Andy. I want to hug my twin and tell him that I never meant to hurt him. I want to marry the man I love, I DON’T want to marry my brother.”

“I hate it too. But do you know what they would do to you if you abandoned them?”

                “Disown me.” I mutter.

“No, Carls, they would do so much worse than that to you because of what you can do! You’re affinity makes you dangerous, and as long as you are on the side of the dark, they will let you live, but as SOON as you betray them they will hunt you down. They will hunt you and they won’t stop hunting you until they capture or kill you.” I look at a lady bug crawling on a blade of grass next to my face a tear leaking out of my eye.

“I know. I just don’t want to live like this anymore.”

“I know. But you have to. You have duty a to our family. Family comes before all else in our world, and self-preservation is instinctive in us Snakes.” I nod and wipe the lone tear away as I hear my mother call the two of us in for dinner.
