To yugioh84: Love your username and thanks for your review. I always thought it was strange that things just went too smoothly in third year. I felt that Rowling not causing Lupin to bite someone was leaving out a very interesting area of possibility. Also I’m not a Tonks/Lupin pairing fan.

To 40loner: Thanks for your review. I update either every day or every two days.

Chapter 2

Hermione was still in a foul mood with Ron during dinner. How dare he assume that she would break any rules! One thing was for certain she was never going to go out with Ronald dumbass Weasley. Her mother had warned her about men that were abusive and she refuse to be an abuse victim. If she was going to go out with someone it would have to be someone that was intelligent and her equal.
“Hermione,” Harry called out.
“Yeah, what do you want,” Hermione said.
“I’m sorry about how Ron’s acting,” Harry told her, “What he said was crude and uncalled for.”
“You think,” she hissed, her eyes flashing with anger, “Do you think that he would know me well enough by now to know that I would never do anything that was against school rules. How dare he think that about me! How dare he treat me like I’m some whore?”
“I know, Hermione, and me, Ginny, and Neville doesn’t view you as one.”
“Good, glad to know that someone around here still knows me well enough,” Hermione said and then she got up and left.
Even with Harry supporting her she felt that she was losing some battle that had been waged sometime ago. It was clear that Ron hated Lupin, though she didn’t understand why, and she would have to watch her back. She returned to Gryffindor Tower to collect her things and to her horror Ron was there. He had been patched up by Madam Pomfrey and he was angry.
“So going to meet with your lover,” Ron snarled.
“I’ve got no idea what you’re talking about,” Hermione said and she could smell his intentions. She knew what he was going to do, which was strange.
“I see how much you look at Lupin, like he’s the best thing in the world,” Ron said to her, “Well I’m going to show you what it’s like to be with someone your own age.”
Hermione backed away, the hunger in Ron’s eyes made her want to run. Yet the part of her that was forming, the wolf, caused her to stand firm. No more running for Hermione Granger.
“I see that I can make you see reason,” Ron said, mistaken her standing firm for something else.
Hermione heard Ron reaching to remove his belt and she launched at him, nails long and sharp, teeth bared. The first attack got him in the face and he screamed as her nails slashed into him. He fell to the ground, the smell of blood filling the air.
“How dare you think that you can attack her,” a voice from within Hermione said, “I tear you up and serve you for dinner.”
Hermione advanced just as the painting opened and half the Gryffindor’s came in.
“HERMIONE!” Harry yelled.
“Get this bitch away from me,” Ron told him.
“He tried to rape me,” Hermione told Ginny and then burst into tears, her courage failing.

“What you tried to do to Miss Granger is unforgivable,” Dumbledore told Ron as soon as Madam Pomfrey patched him up.
He couldn’t believe what he had heard. McGonagall had viewed Miss Granger’s memories and had seen what Ron had tried to do. Ron was sent to his office at once and it took everything in the Headmaster to keep from hexing him.
“I didn’t do anything wrong,” Ron told him, “You should be looking at Lupin and what he and Hermione are doing.”
“Remus is doing nothing,” Dumbledore told him, his eyes flashing with anger, “Don’t you dare even think that my Defense Master would do something as low as having relations with a student.”
He challenged Ron to counter him and Ron looked like he wanted to but he said nothing. Good, the boy was learning his place. Dumbledore continued, “You’re acting out in public, making sure that the school knew that you have no brains, and your attempted attack on Miss Granger is leaving me no choice but to suspend you for the remaining year. Maybe when you come back to repeat your third year you will learn something.”
“WHAT, YOU CAN’T DO THIS,” Ron roared with anger.
Dumbledore rose up and looked at him and Ron shuttered. “I can do whatever I want,” Dumbledore told him, his tone cold and devoid of the friendliness that it usually had, “You attempted to rape a student, someone that you had considered a friend. Be lucky that you’re not in a cell in Azkaban tonight.”
Ron shuttered even more. Despite it all, deep down, he still feared Azkaban.
“I’ll inform them to bring the Hogwarts Express around,” Dumbledore told Ron, “You’re confined to Professor McGonagall’s office until tomorrow morning. Wand, Mr. Weasley.”
Ron glared at him but handed over his wand.
“You will get this back when term starts again,” Dumbledore told him, “If this happens again I will insure that you see what Azkaban is like. You’re dismissed; Professor McGonagall is waiting on you outside.”
Ron glared at him but thankfully he left.

“I can’t believe that he tried to rape me,” Hermione said to Lupin.
Dumbledore had sent Hermione to see him so that she could talk about what happened. It was all part of getting Hermione ready for her first transformation.
“Ron, viewed me as the enemy,” Lupin told her.
“But your sweet and kind,” Hermione said.
She had forgiven him for biting her, which had been a huge step for her.
“I’m also a monster,” Lupin told her, grinning.
“Your not a monster, I am,” Hermione told him and she saw him give her an odd look, “I almost ripped Ron’s face off instead of using my wand.”
She heard Lupin sigh and then he said, “You’re not a monster. You’re a beautiful and smart witch.”
Hermione stared at him. Did he just call her a beautiful and smart witch? Lupin went on, “It’s my fault that you’re cursed. I don’t know why Dumbledore even allowed me to work here.”
Hermione felt tears welling up. He really hated what he had done. They leaked out and down her cheeks.
“Hermione, there is no need to cry,” Lupin told her and he got up and handed her a tissue, which she accepted.
As soon as her fingers brushed his hand she felt a spark of something. The sudden urge for him to kiss her flooded her and made her feel weak. What the heck was wrong with her?
“Um, I think I’ll be going,” Hermione told Lupin, getting up.
She wanted to get away from this room before someone walked in and saw what was happening and got the wrong idea. Yet the other side of her wanted him to kiss her and that side was slowly winning. Before she had a chance to decide between kissing him and killing him the door opened.
“Miss Granger,” Snape said and she wheeled around and growled at him, her teeth bared.
“How dare you interrupt, human,” the forming wolf snarled.
She advanced on him and he backed away.
“Um, I’ve got the wrong door,” Snape said and Hermione could smell the fear coming off of him.
He bolted, slamming the door behind him.
Hermione shook her head and screamed, “I’M NOW A PUBLIC FREAK,” and bolted from the room, leaving her bag behind.

“I’m a freak,” Hermione said, later that night, “Oh Merlin, I have class tomorrow.”
Hermione officially hated her life. Why did she want him to kiss her? Was it because they were werewolves or something? She needed to find out the truth and the only place that she was going to find it was in the Library. That meant skiving off Charms.
“Please forgive me, Professor Flitwick,” she said.
The next day she hurried to the Library, hoping that Madam Pince wasn’t going to be in. Thankfully the ugly Librarian wasn’t around and that enabled her to go to the section that the Library had about werewolves. She pulled one book down and started to look through the pages, hoping for something. Finally near the middle part of the book she found something that looked promising.
MATING HABITS OF WEREWOLVES INCLUDING THOSE OF THE NEWLY BITTEN
Mating between the Alpha wolf and its mate is usually found in large packs. If a werewolf is a lone wolf, without a pack, then mating is far and in-between. A lone wolf will most likely avoid women of the opposite sex, or even the same sex, to avoid mating. Mating between werewolves is violent and has none of the tenderness that a normal union has.
If a lone wolf comes upon a female werewolf then mating is usually quick and violent. However if the female werewolf has just been bitten then things are different. Depending on the age of the female when she was bitten it may take years before mating happens. If the female that was bitten has reach maturity, around the age of thirteen or fourteen (when she’s able to get pregnant) then it will take usually a full transformation before the wolf can smell the wolf in her.
All mating is controlled by the Ministry and if it’s known that a female werewolf has mated then the person over her must report it to the Ministry.
“Now I’m a freak,” Hermione said, and put the book away.

“What happened inside your office,” Dumbledore asked.
“I don’t know,” Lupin answered, “I just-.”
Deep down, despite the fact that he looked clearly upset, Dumbledore was ecstatic. Lupin really needed a girl in his life, someone to make him feel less lonely. Normally he wouldn’t approve of such a thing but this was werewolf society and he couldn’t go against it.
“Remus, you know that after the full moon you’ll be able to tell that she’s a werewolf,” Dumbledore told him.
“I know,” Lupin said, “And I’m worried that I’m going to ruin her life even more.”
“Oh don’t be such a sourpuss,” Dumbledore said, “This might turn out to be a good thing.”
Lupin groaned and said, “That’s why I need to leave before she transforms.”
“Nonsense,” Dumbledore said, “As long as I don’t see it then I’ve got no problem with it.”
Lupin couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Did Dumbledore just give him permission to court her? The twinkle in Dumbledore’s eyes told Lupin that he had just played matchmaker.
Okay, Lupin officially felt like a freak.

Hermione was in the common room when Harry and the others returned from wherever they had been. Harry went over and sat down.
“Hermione, where were you,” Harry asked her, his voice laced with concern.
“I don’t want to talk about it,” Hermione told him.
“Why not,” Harry asked.
“Because it’s personal, Harry,” Hermione told him, getting up, “When I’m ready to tell you then I will.”
“Okay,” Harry said slowly, “But are you sure that you don’t need to see Madam Pomfrey.”
“No, I’m fine,” Hermione lied and went up to her dorm.
Later that night Hermione was busy reading when she felt someone sit down, which she wasn‘t expecting. She almost screamed when she saw who it was. Lupin looked upset about something and Hermione had a bad feeling that she was involved in it.
“I’m sorry about what almost happened,” Lupin told her.
“I think I’m going to go,” Hermione told him but he put a hand on her arm.
“Hermione, are you mad at me,” Lupin asked.
“No, I’m mad at myself,” Hermione told him, “I should have read up on this and I didn’t. I didn’t know what was wrong with me and now I do.”
“I see,” Lupin said.
“Professor, you’re a great guy but me-.”
“Dumbledore knows,” Lupin cut in and Hermione stared at him.
Oh great, Hermione thought, I’m going to be suspended.
“He’s okay with it,” Lupin continued.
“What!” Hermione said, shocked. “But-.”
“He’s playing matchmaker,” Lupin told her, “I bet right now he’s eating those damn lemon drops with glee.”
“Oh remind me to kill him with his own candy,” Hermione snarled.
She couldn’t believe that the man that she respected was going for this.
“I told him that I wanted to leave before your first transformation but he refuses,” Lupin told her, “And after the first transformation I might decide, or the wolf might decide, to mate with you. Mating is like marriage. Once it’s done it can’t be undone.”
Hermione couldn’t believe what she was hearing. Finally she found her voice, “What do you mean it’s like marriage, once isn’t done it can’t be undone?”
“It’s considered a form of wizarding marriage,” Lupin answered, “True mates are very rare. However since this falls under the Ministry control they consider it a form of wizarding marriage.”
“Oh great,” Hermione moaned.
“It was in the packet,” Lupin told her.
“I-I didn’t read it,” Hermione said, kicking herself for not doing what she was known for.
“Hermione, I’m not blaming you for not reading it,” Lupin said, “All it does is remind you that someone has control over your life.”
Hermione bit her lip and then asked, “Who bit you?”
“I don’t know,” Lupin answered.
“Do you think that you’ll ever find out,” Hermione asked him.
Lupin moved away and headed for the door. He stopped and said, “I hope to find out one day,” and he left her alone with her thoughts.

Note: Glad that I’m getting votes on this story. I know, not much going on but I want to sort of work on a base and then have the smut. Of course things will happen that will change everything. Oh italics is the wolf talking, just so that people know. See you guys on Sunday.
