Chapter 2
The Battle

Harry had left the Order behind. He knew that the ones he could trust to watch his back during the battle would follow. He took only a second to assess the situation before firing hexes at the Death Eaters. He noticed that many of the towns people were gone, probably hiding up at Hogwarts and those that had stayed most laid dead. What surprised him the most was the students that were holding their own against the Death Eaters. The Trio had been given permission by the Headmaster to leave the school on a Saturday to attend the meeting. Harry hadn’t really wanted to attend but had gone because it was expected of him. Now he regretted not remaining at Hogwarts.

His first hex hit a low level Death Eater in the back as the man sent a dark curse at a student who had his back to the Death Eater. The man fell wrapped in bonds that kept him from escaping. Harry moved towards were he could see a few students struggling. Most of the students were the sixth and seventh years that were in the D.A with him. He had continued the club this year, with permission from the Headmaster. He even got the quidditch ban lifted.

He quickly spotted where the major battle was going. His eyes widened as he took in the fact that Voldemort had come with his Death Eaters. Besides the incident in the Ministry at the Hall of Prophecies, Harry knew that Voldemort let his followers fight his battles. The fact that he was here tonight told Harry that this was going to be the final battle. He started making his way towards Voldemort and Dumbledore. The two were locked in a heated duel. Even the Death Eaters knew that to interfere meant death. Voldemort wanted to personally kill Albus Dumbledore and Harry Potter.

While Harry was trying to get closer to the main battle, Hermione along with Snape, Lucius and Draco began to take down any Death Eater that tried to block Harry or tried to shoot spells at his back. They let the rest of the Order worry about rounding the Death Eaters up. But half way there some signal seemed to pass through the Death Eaters and their spells became darker and more powerful. They had been killing people but hadn’t been using Avada to do it. It was almost like the Dark side wanted the Light to under estimate them. Snape and the Malfoys immediately began firing their own dark hexes back but what would have surprised most people, if they had the time to notice, was that Harry and Hermione both were casting their own Dark Arts spells.

In their fifth year Hermione had started researching the Dark Arts. Never with the intent to use but so she could help Harry and understand the enemy better. Harry came across her research a year later and gave her one of the biggest lectures in her life about how stupid she was. Of course Harry felt like an ass after she explained just why she was doing the research. He became contemplative after a few days of being sheepish. After about a month of helping her research he finally broached the subject of casting the spells. This of course led to Hermione giving Harry his own lecture back at him but he patiently waited as if expecting all of this. Hermione took notice of this and wondered just what he was thinking and called him on it. Harry remembered the conversation well.

(Conversation)

Hermione looked at Harry with suspicious eyes. “What could possibly be a reasonable explanation to practicing these spells Harry?” She was rather aggravated with the boy. If only because he had been yelling at her a month ago for researching these spells and now he wanted to go practicing them! She just didn’t understand what he was thinking.

Harry had just let Hermione have her lecture knowing that it was only fair after how he had acted when he caught her researching these spells. But he had been thinking about it for a while now, “Mione, the Death Eaters aren’t going to hold back, and you know as well as I do that magic is all about intent.” He saw her about to interrupt and quickly stopped her. “Mione our first spell that we ever learning here could be considered Dark magic.”

Hermione’s brow furrowed, “But Harry our first spell was Wingardium Leviosa. How is that a dark spell?”

Harry looked amused at the so called brightest witch of their generation. “How about if you use Wingardium Leviosa on a person and drop them on their head. At the right height it could kill and a lot more painful than the killing curse would.” He watched as she took in these information, he sat back knowing that soon she would connect all the dots and probably even surpass him.
He looked at her confused when she suddenly began to pack her stuff. “Hermione?” He asked startled.

She grinned at Harry, “You coming?” She asked amused.

“And just where are we going?” Harry asked in the same amused tone as he began to pack his own books and notes away.

“To Professor Snape of course.” She replied as they left the Library. Harry stopped for a minute looking at the girl he considered a sister.

“Snape?”

Hermione turned and looked at Harry amused. “Well I thought it would be easier to learn these spells if we had a teacher who actually knew how to cast them.”

(End of Conversation)

Convincing Snape to teach them had taken time and dedication. Finally they got the man to agree and the two of them were trained in the dark arts by Professor Snape and on occasion Lucius Malfoy. The two slytherins were hard task masters but by the end of their sixth year they could hold their own against the two. Harry was the more proficient one but Hermione had the better intuition. She had often surprised everyone with just how she used her spells. Both those consider light and dark.

It was because of this training that the group was doing a great deal of damage to the other side. But this attracted attention and soon the Death Eaters kept trying to separate the group and get them alone. Harry managed to get separated but quickly took out the Death Eater before making his way to the hill. Just in time to see Voldemort take out the Leader of the Light. Harry’s eyes widened as he took in the body of the fallen Headmaster. But he quickly gained control of his emotions. He was angry, relieved and confused all at the same time but knew he needed to focus on other things right now.

All around them duels slowly stopped as everyone turned to watch the two enemies facing each and waited with baited breaths for the first person to cast their spell.

*******

Ok guys… so I realize that I’m leaving a cliff hanger but I’m afraid that the battle between the two of them and the aftermath needs to be a separate chapter.
Also I want to try and clear any confusion, Harry and the gang is in their sixth year. Also Sirius is alive but I’ll explain why in another chapter.
Please review. It helps me think and its awesome inspiration to get the next chapter up sooner.
Oh and if anyone wants to beta it I’d love that.
