Ch 2. A Toast
**********
“A toast” Draco chuckled, “to beautiful witches, past, present, and future”.
“You said it Drac,” Blaise Zambini said slightly sloshed. Theodore Nott nodded his head in agreement. The three young bachelors clinked their tumblers together and then downed the contents. His two closest confidents around him, drinking in his private study with the prospect of shagging a gorgeous witch in the near future, Draco Malfoy could not have been happier.
**********
“A toast” an inebriated but loveable Ron Weasley gargled, “to friends and family, past, present, and future”. Those around him raised their glasses in good cheer. A very pregnant Hermione playfully slapped his arm, disapproving but glowing in adoration for her husband.
Ginny smiled, who would have thought that with all her ambition, Hermione would have been knocked up first. Nevertheless, the brilliant witch did not seem to mind the prospect of little wizlets under her toes while she completed her charms research. Moreover, with Ron working at his brother’s prosperous joke shop, their future seemed full of promise and marital bliss.
The party had died down somewhat and all that remained was the Weasley family and those friends close enough to be family. Hagrid and Charlie remained in the garden smoking on pipes and singing bawdy drunken songs –most of which they only knew half of the words. Considering the words they DID remember, it was a blessing young Victorie and Teddy Lupin had been put to bed. Their voices floated in along the crisp late August breeze through the open kitchen window.
Ron, Hermione, Ginny, Neville (now professor a-thank-you!), and her parents sat around the kitchen table apart from those settled in the living room. Teacups in hand, they quietly reminisced about the war. Feeling completely at ease and content, Ginny decided this was the perfect time to share her good news. She kept her joy bottled up all night so as not to steal Percy’s birthday spotlight, but she just could not contain it any longer.
Standing up, swaying slightly from the alcohol she had consumed, a flushed Ginny Weasley raised her teacup with a secretive smile. “A toast, to the new Holyhead Harpies first string chaser” she blushed in spite of herself, “Surprise!” It took a brief second to sink in among the sleepy partygoers until Ron, bless his heart, crashed into her, enveloping her in an alarmingly crushing embrace. Shouting in her ear he said, “GIN THAS GREEATT!”, he turned towards the living room, “GUYSS GINS BEEN HOLDING OUTT ON USSS! –heh, she never changes huh? –SHES THE NNNEEEWWW HARPIES CHASER!”
Streaks of red flew into the kitchen as Bill, George, and Percy emerged from the comfortable living room to hug their baby sister, their wives trailing after. Fleur gushed appropriately, Audrey muttered something akin to “there goes your grandchildren Molly…” and Angelina gave an enthusiastic double high five.
The only people who did not show much enthusiasm however, were the two people Ginny had been so far successfully avoiding all night. One, Harry Potter, the bloody boy who lived, the chosen one, the all holy destroyer of all evil or whatever, and his girlfriend of almost two years, Luna Lovegood.
Ginny’s one time best friend shot her a dreamy smile from aside Harry, her expression a watered down reflection of Harry’s own guilt ridden shifty eyed glance. Regardless however, he plastered on a fake grin for the family’s sake.
Amidst her family and friends rejoicing and cheering around her, Ginny still felt completely, horribly, and devastatingly alone.
**********
“What in bloody hell is this?” Ginny softly whispered upon stepping through the floo grate, her voice filled with rage.
“Erm... It’s... uh... well…”
“Not what it looks like Harry?” Ginny continued her voice raising, “it seems to me that you are shagging Luna on OUR kitchen counter top. Now Harry, if that’s not what is going on, and my eyes so CLEARLY deceive me, PLEASE INFORM ME what IS going on”.
Harry looked too dumbfounded for words and Luna kept averting her gaze.
“I… uh… Gin, come on…” Harry stammered clearly looking for a way out.
“Save it Harry, I cannot believe you would do this to me. Harry, after all we have been through? You loved me, I have always loved you. We were going to be married! Start our lives together!” Ginny started working herself up even more “what will we tell Ron, Hermione, or, or, my parents!? GOD Harry, how COULD YOU?! AND YOU” she wheeled towards to Luna “You are –were my best mate! You knew how much he meant to me, you, you; you were there with me for years during Hogwarts. You understood me… we… we… MERLIN BITCH SHOW SOME GOD DAMNED REMORSE!”
“Gin,” Luna said hastily “he came to me so unhappy; I had to help him…”
“OH don’t you ‘GIN’ me!” the red head shrilly shrieked, turning back to Harry, “I’m coming back tomorrow morning and you and that, that, trollop better not bloody be here. Pack your fucking things Harry Potter, it’s over!”
At that, Ginny turned on her heel and exited through the floo, not before of course, casting two of her trademark Bat Bogey hexes.
**********
How she wished right now she could hex him again just for making her feel so worthless even years later on one of the most monumental days of her career.
Once she had cooled down though, they eventually talked it out and agreed not to disclose the details of their break up to her family. They figured it would completely ruin the entire family dynamic permanently, and though Ginny would not admit it aloud, she felt that they might even side with Harry, the honorary son. Gin sold her ring and got to keep their Hogsmeade apartment and to the entire world, it seemed that the Harry, Ginny power couple dissolved quietly and amicably. Gin was not happy, but in retrospect, the scandal that would have ensued probably would have overshadowed and maybe ruined her career. So, ever the strong woman, Ginny pushed forward. Seeing them together at times like this sure was hard though.
Taking one more drink, she finally made her excuses to the rest of her drunken companions and flooed back to her apartment alone.
She still had not told a soul about what had transpired that night, and even though her family surely suspected foul play, they chose to over look it. Everyone was so willing to cut the chosen one some slack. Let him have his fun. Surely he had suffered enough already right?
Ginny stood staring at her kitchen counter top and whispered to her empty apartment, “but what about me?”
**********
Harry and Luna strolled down Diagon ally completing some early morning errands before they flooed back to Grimmauld Place. Once Ginny had left and the Weasley parents had decided to tuck in, the party had moved back to George and Angelina’s flat over the shop. The party had continued throughout the night, and most of the partiers had ended up staying over.
Taking advantage of the situation, they decided to make a quick early morning shopping trip while they were in the area. School time was nearing and most of the shops had their new merchandise proudly displayed so, the street was crowded and bustling with life. The celebrity couple moved easily through the crowds undetected.
The Quidditch shop’s new display caught Harry’s eye so the happy couple stopped briefly to check it out. English Quidditch season was unfortunately over and the World Cup was very rapidly approaching so the shop was filled with next season’s supplies and the newest Firebolt.
“Harry, I’m worried about Ginny… do you think she’ll ever forgive us?”
Harry looked over at his blonde beauty “Love, I’m not sure she can. She found us in a pretty precarious position…” He trailed off, he honestly thought Ginny would never forgive him, but he could not tell Luna that. “Just give her time ok?”
Luna nodded serenely “I just miss her is all”
Harry sighed. He had popped the question not long after Ron had to Hermione. He felt so pressured by her family and the media to; he did so long before he was ready. It was not that he did not love Ginny, but the reality of starting a family was too much for him so soon after the war. He had started to see Luna while Ginny was away for Quidditch soon after they became engaged. It started as casual meetings first, but her serenity and her dreamy quality intrigued him to see her more. While Ginny began pressuring him to set a date for the wedding, he ran to Luna more and more. Luna never pressured him to do anything, Luna seemed to understand –she never asked anything of him. The relationship soon turned physical and Harry began falling for the blonde witch. Then Hermione and Ron’s wedding happened. Not long after, Ginny had gotten him to agree to start to fix up Grimmauld place so they could move out of their apartment. Ginny took him out shopping for wedding dresses; Ginny kept pestering him about invitations and flower arrangements. All of this were not-so-subtle nudges for them to set a date and finally become husband and wife. Her demand for a nursery be put in Sirius’ old room however, had been the final straw. The second she had gone away for Quidditch training camp, he had invited Luna over to play house. He was not sure how to tell Ginny he wanted to break up, but it turned out he did not even have to worry because it was when she came home two days early from training camp that she walked in on them. Then she did the hard part for him.
“Pack your fucking things Harry Potter, it’s over!”
“It’s over?”
Harry was awoken from his daze. He stammered “what Luna?”
“It’s over? Quidditch season is over?”
He sighed,“Yeah Luna, no British teams made it to the World Cup. It’s over.”
“Ohh” Luna said airily “that’s ...sad”.
“Yeah baby... it is. Let’s go home”
The two meandered away from the shop window
‘Interesting’ the robed figure next to the shop window mused. ‘It seems that Ginny really IS single and the break up was NOT friendly’. Blaise Zambini looked at his watch, turned and headed towards Knockturn alley. He had a brunch date with Draco, and he knew this tidbit of gossip would be a delight to share.
“I’ve always been fond of redheads”.
