Harry woke abruptly, the sound of barely heard voices down an echoing hallway still in his head. He looked around and flopped back onto his bed, wondering at the time. It was still dark outside and he could see the faint glow of the streetlight beyond the bars of his window. He ran a hand over his face and thought about his dream.
It hadn't felt like one of Voldemort's visions, but he was still wary. He sat up, his bare feet coming down onto the floorboard under which lay his most treasured possessions. As he rose, the board creaked in protest and he bent to pull it up. Beneath, he pulled out his photo-album and began flipping through it.
Sometime tonight, he knew, he'd finally reach 17. He smiled at the thought. No one had expected him to live this long once Voldemort had returned. Especially himself. A clock on the side of his bed read 11:50 pm was in clear red letters. The faint sounds of Dudley's snoreing moved through the air. Then another sound seemed to take over.
The sound of heavy footsteps coming up the stairs. The steps were the only noises coming from the stairs. Harry glanced up, the hairs on the back of his neck standing up. He quickly replaced the photo-album and took out his Invisibility Cloak, putting the board back in it's place. He swung the cloak around his body and moved toward the door. If it opened, he would be in the small space behind it, out of the way, but able to peek around and see who was in his room. He pulled his wand from a small holster he kept strapped to his forearm, holding it ready and trying to slow his breathing and the pounding of his heart.
*That better be a member of the Order.* he thought.
*Or Dumbledore's got some serious explaining to do about the wards...* Slowly the footsteps moved to the door and went silent.
Several moments went by without a single sound. Slowly the door knob turned slowly pushing open showing a slightly tanned hand. The very familiar voice of his godfather Sirius whispered into the room.
"Harry...?" The wards around the home were going to disappear soon and he had to get Harry out of there.
Harry whipped the cloak from his shoulders and had to work hard to keep from yelling happily. He leapt from behind the door, throwing an arm around his godfather.
"Sirius?! What are you doing here?" His smiled faded quickly, though once he sensed the other man's apprehension.
"What's going on?" Sirius caught his surprisingly light godson and quickly shut the door.
The years in Azkaban still seen on his face but he looked at least slightly healthier thanks to Remus's constant nagging.
"Harry get all your belongings we need to get you out of here quickly." Sirius whispered setting him down on his feet.
Harry nodded silently, moving to his secret hiding spot and removing everything in it. He quickly packed everything in his trunk, strapping Hedwig's empty cage to the top. He shrunk them and put them aside for the moment before dressing quickly, seemingly not bothered with Sirius' presence. Once dressed, he pocketed his trunk and slid his wand into it's holster. His cloak was draped over his forearm in case it was needed, and he gripped the handle of his broom.
"Ready when you are." He hesitated slightly before asking his next question.
"Is...is it Voldemort? Is he coming here?" Sirius gulped slightly as his godson was almost right on the nose.
"There is no time to explain just follow me." Sirius said quickly leading Harry down to the back door of the house.
Slowly Sirius opened the back door but didnt exit it. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a shrunked broom. He enlarged it and held it tight in his hand.
"What ever you do Harry dont lose sight of me. Do you understand?" Harry nodded, quickly mounting his broom. His thoughts whirled inside his head.
*What the hell is going on? Voldemort shouldn't be able to get here! But if it isn't him, then...* Harry shook his head forcefully, determined to concentrate on following Sirius for the moment.
Whatever happened, he knew Sirius would be there. Harry wondered idly if the slightly healthier weight on his godfather's body was due to a certain werewolf's care... Sirius mounted his broom getting ready. The clock in the living room chimed midnight as a visible glitter appeared in the yard.
"Come on Harry." Sirius said as he kicked off into the air.
Harry followed, feeling the familiar thrill as the earth seemed to fall away beneath his feet. For a moment, all was as it should have been. Nothing mattered, he was just a boy going flying with his favorite relative. Then the rest of the world melted back into his reality and he sighed, the cool air on his face whipping his hair around him. It had grown longer, he realized. Not too long, but Aunt Petunia hadn't wanted to wrestle with him this year, so his fringe was almost long enough to hide his scar now. The thought made him smile grimly and tighten his grip on his broom.
Sirius started to pick up speed and Harry leaned forward to catch up. His worry increased with their speed, flying this fast outside a Quidditch pitch was extremely reckless, but he trusted his godfather. Harry watched Sirius zip around and followed his lead, seeing buildings and birds and cars fly past at an alarming rate.
Sirius found the lost flying skills he had as a teen return. He dodged buildings, poles and other objects as he flew towards their destination. All too soon Sirius slowed down starting to land on the ground near the Black House. Still irked that he had to live there but it was better knowing the Order and Harry lived there with him. Harry paused as he dismounted. He glanced up and down the street, but saw nothing unusual and followed Sirius toward the front door.
"Are you going to tell me what's going on?" Sirius walked up the stairs and looked around then opened the door.
"Come inside. I'll explain it inside." Harry sighed and did as he was told, the adrenaline released from their hasty flight slowly beginning to wear off.
He stared at Sirius' back as he followed him, wondering just what was so urgent he'd had to leave without even an Auror. Once inside Sirius shut and locks the door. The house was almost errily silent as none of the lights were on.
"Just go into the living room and meet me there i have to call Albus."
"Yeah, alright." Harry tiptoes out of the hall, still wary of Mrs. Black's portrait.
Once in the living room, he perches on an ottoman, his elbows resting on his knees. After a few moments, he glances up to the Black Family Tapestry. He looks over the several burn marks and wonders if, an hundred years from now, anyone will know who those burn marks were.
Suddenly the lights were turned on a large banner over the door falls with the words 'Happy Birthday'. The room erupted in hundreds of 'Surprises'. Friends all around with presents and his auror friends also with gifts. Harry leaps to his feet, his heart almost seeming to stop for a moment before a huge smile breaks out over his face.
"Are you kidding me?" He grabs Ron by around the neck and laughs brightly.
Ron laughs as he pats Harry on the back and Sirius step into the room grinning. Hermione walks over and wraps her arms around his neck.
"Happy Birthday Harry!" He hugs Hermione tightly, almost overwhelmed with gratitude and a feeling of extreme luck in finding friends like the two of them.
"I...I've never had a birthday party." Once Hermione lets go he was assulted by a blonde head and a red head of hair.
"Harry!" Both Ginny and Luna cried as they hugged him tight.
"We wanted to give you the best birthday ever!" Neville stepped up to Harry's side and smiled shyly.
"Happy birthday, Harry." Harry grinned at him, then turned to Luna and Ginny.
"It already is." His eyes find Sirius in the crowd.
"Hey! I knew it the whole time, you! I did!" Sirius chuckles shaking his head.
"Uh huh... you knew it the whole time Harry..." Sirius said as he walked to an armchair sitting down while Remus stood by him.
"Why dont you open your preasents mate." Ron said as Hermione nodded.
"Yeah." Harry glanced around curiously as Neville stepped forward and offered a small, silver-wrapped box.
"I-it's not much, but..." Harry took the gift with a 'thank you' and began unwrapping it carefully.
Inside was a small wooden box carved with several figures in various stages of flight. Harry took his time looking over the box, then opened it to reveal a wooden ball, covered in curlicues that look to have been painted in gold. When he touches the ball, a set of tiny, intricate wings unfold.
"Oh wow." Neville beamed at Harry.
"It's a snitch from the middle ages. My Grandmother found it for me."
"Neville, this is great!" Harry smiled widely at the taller boy.
"Alright," he continued, glancing around.
"Who's next?" Luna stepped foreward holding up a very oddly shapped wrapped package.
She had her turnip earlings in and her wand holding back her hair.
"I hope you like this Harry i brought it from home."
Once Harry opened it inside was what looked like a bat but it had a very ugly old mans face carved into the top of it. The handle was wrapped with a fur.
"It's a Willowmole staff its used to hit Willowmole's on the head to keep from eating your potatos. They have populated this area you know." She says as both Hermione and Ron look at her oddly.
"Um." Harry smiled at Luna.
"I'll be glad to have this, then, if I should run into one." He passed the snitch and the staff to Ron, who sat them carefully on a nearby table.
When he turned back, Ron had a large red and gold box in his arms.
"Here you are, mate. From me to you." Harry took the gift, stumbling back slightly under the weight.
"Merlin, Ron, what's in here?" he asked, but Ron only grinned and motioned for Harry to open it.
Once he had, he stared for a moment. Inside was a beautiful (and heavy) marble chess set. Harry opened his mouth to ask Ron how on earth he could afford such a thing, but thought better of it.
"You'll never beat me now, Ron!" He said instead, grinning widely.
Ron chuckled and crossed his arms.
"No matter how much you practice you will never beat me!" Hermione rolled her eyes and held out a square gift in a pristeen wrapping.
"This is from me Harry. I hope you like it."
Inside was an old Diary that belonged to Lily while she had been in school and afterward. Harry opened the book curiously, before shutting it quickly. He certainly didn't want to read such a thing with so many people around.
"Hermione...where...?" Hermione smiled then looked at Sirius.
"Sirius told me that Lily had kept it "Right Under Your Nose" which was easy to figure out where she hid it. Happy Birthday Harry."
"Er. Right." He smiled softly.
"Thank you..." "My turn!" Ginny stepped up and offered another book-shaped gift wrapped in purple and yellow paper.
"Dad bought the wrapping." She grinned at Harry, who unwrapped the present quickly.
He found two leather-bound books. One with a black ribbon marker, and the other with red. He glanced curiously up at Ginny.
"They're two-way journals." She replied to his unspoken question.
"You write in one and it appears in the other as well." Harry looked back down at the books, running a finger over the red ribbon and wondering who he would ever share them with. Ron shakes his head.
"Come on Ginny if you want one of those journals just ask him." He teased as he knew Ginny had more feelings for NEville than Harry at this point in her life.
"Sure." She replied. "The day you give one to Lavender." She laughed brightly as Ron's face turned a rather alarming shade of green.
"Point taken." Ron sighed heavily as the party went on with the rest of the presents and cake.
Soon everyone had either left for home or had gone to bed. Sirius was finishing up the dishes as he was glad that Harry had such a great time. He may have missed out on being a parent to Harry but he was sure as hell going to make up for it. Harry wandered into the kitchen, leaning back against the counter beside Sirius.
"The Weasleys just left. That's everyone." He sighed.
"I wish it could be like this every year. I wish..." but he didn't finish, his happy mood slipping a bit as he remembered what life had been like so far.
Sirius turned off the water and walked over to him.
"Dont dwell on the past Harry what is important is that we are together." Sirius said hugging Harry close.
Harry returned Sirius' hug, thinking that this was how his life was supposed to be. Hugged and loved by his parents and Sirius.
"Yeah."
