Chapter Two

Hermione had lied to them in order to escape from the memorial service. She had packed up her parent’s house within hours of arriving back to England. Unable to sleep, she packed more like a person going through the motions. The objects meant nothing. They were just things.

But now she had a task to do. She went back over to the crypts of Hogwarts. Pulling out the large spell book, she placed it on the ground in front of her. She needed sleep, she told herself, but still she pushed to attempt the spell. It was a simple chant rooted in earth magic. Grounded in the old and powerful, the elemental magic swept through her like a storm. Slowly she held out her hands even as it felt as if they were being pulled by an unseen force until she felt like she was going to be torn apart.

Winds whipped the air, tossing her hair about until she was blinded by it. Lightning lit the skies and rain began to pound her that felt like it would freeze her to the bone. Thunder rolled, rocking the earth and deafened her to everything, including her own screams of pain. But as suddenly as it had started it stopped.

Hermione sapped of every ounce of energy she had left, crumbled and would have fallen to the ground if not for two strong arms catching her.

Severus Snape held her as Remus Lupin walked over to them, both stunned and scared.

“What have you done, witch?” Severus whispered. “What have you done?”

Blackness filled Hermione’s mind. It was the rest of the emotionally drained as well as the physically exhausted. She would have happily stayed so, but a bitter potion was poured into her mouth and she soon found herself trying to hide her face from the light that felt too bright to her weary eyes.

“No…too soon…tired…”

“Miss Granger…”

“Severus, you could be kinder to her you know. She did manage to resurrect us,” Remus told him.

“I know very well what she did. I also know that we aren’t the only ones she did so,” he reminded him just as another voice joined the mix.

“How is Miss Granger doing?” Albus Dumbledore asked quietly. “Ahh, the potion seems to have revived her somewhat. Mr. Weasley and I were speaking in the kitchen and we…”

“Fred?” Hermione’s voice croaked out.

“Hermione!” The redheaded young wizard went straight over to her. “How are you?”

“Just how many people did I bring back?” Horror struck her. “I didn’t bring back any of the Death Eaters did I?”

“Now isn’t the time to think of such, Miss Granger,” Snape purred in a hard tone that had her flinching.

“No, you didn’t,” Remus told her. “You only brought back us four.” Swallowing thickly, he asked, “How could you do it?”

She looked over to him. “I studied my form of magic. I looked into the old texts. I also spoke to several witches who were of the old ways. They told me of magic older than time. It was during my studies I found a spell. A resurrection spell that could work if the caster was strong enough and for the right reasons…”

“And who would be the one to say what these so called reasons were sound or not?” Severus asked her.

“Gaya,” she breathed. “I asked her advice.” She looked into Snape’s black eyes. “And she gave it along with permission to use the spell.” She smiled at Dumbledore. “Though I have to say that I wasn’t expecting to bring you back, sir.”

“So just whom were you trying to bring back to life?” Remus couldn’t help but to ask.

“I’m not entirely certain whom I was trying to bring back,” she answered honestly, as she stood up. “I-I only knew I needed to do something…”

“You foolish girl!” Severus snapped at her. “Do you know what you’ve done?”

Hermione looked at him. “Given you a chance to live a life free of your masters.” She looked to Dumbledore. “Given you a chance to find love with a man without fear.” The old man blushed. She looked over to Remus. “Given you a chance to see your son grow up to be a man as you are free of a curse.” She looked over to Fred. “Given you back your twin and family.” Hermione looked back to Severus. “Given you a future of possibilities. Isn’t that enough?”

“People will ask questions!” he exclaimed.

“Yes,” she said with a nod of her head. “As that is normal, I expect they will. And I’m sure that between the five of us we will come up with an answer that will have them happy.” She cupped his face, caressing it as she murmured, “You worry too much.”

Pink infused the man’s pale skin, as he lectured himself not to lean into her touch. Going up on tiptoe, she kissed his cheek. His arms went around her tightly, hugging her to himself.

Hermione sat in silence as she sipped on her tea. It was three in the morning and chances were that this would be the closest that she would come to peace and quiet. The next day would be chaos. There is no doubt in her mind of that. Her hand was shaking as she brought the cup to her mouth. She put it down again without even taking a sip of the now lukewarm tea, looking around her old family home. Sighing she had to admit what the problem was-she was lonely.

Just then there was a knock on her front door. Standing there looking lost was none other than Severus Snape.

“Fred Weasley and Remus are with their families,” he said quietly. “And Professor Dumbledore is at the school.”

“I would have thought you would be there as well,” she murmured, watching him as she said so.

He nodded. “Albus doesn’t want the job as headmaster any longer. He said that he’s had it for long enough. And Minerva told me that she felt too old to be taking over the school at this point in her life.”

“And that would leave…?”

“Me.” Hermione stepped aside and let him into the house.

Severus looked around the empty house and back over to Hermione who was leaning against the nearest wall. “What are you still doing here if you have nothing here any longer?”

She shrugged. “Trying to figure everything out I suppose.”

“Like?”

“My parents are dead, my relationship with Ron is long over, and I don’t know what to do. You could say I’m lost.”

He nodded slowly at this. “I’ve been lost a time or two myself.” Severus studied her. “Allow me to send you a way out?” Her head tilted as she waited for him to go on. “Come to the school. There is so very much to do, not the least of which is to rebuild what was destroyed during the Battle of Hogwarts.” He stepped closer to her. “It’s your home, Hermione. Every bit as it is mine. Help the school…help me.” He swallowed thickly. “I-I don’t think I can do it alone.”

She reached over and took his hand. “Even the founding members had each other.” He kept looking at her hand holding his in shock as she whispered, “Of course I’ll help.”
