Chapter 2

“Draco Malfoy”.

And again he turned to look back out the window. Her brows furrowed and her lips pursed as she tried to study this Draco character. Trying again she asked “ Is this your first time to Hogwarts?” It seemed like an okay question seeing as how she couldn’t tell how old he was exactly.

This time he didn’t even look at her to answer “Yeah”.

Okay so not very friendly. Emma decided that was okay because she had enough friendly to spare. “So you’re not very talkative are you? That’s okay because I like to talk. My mum says that I’m a right chatterbox sometimes.” This time she saw a ghost of a smile before he quickly controlled it. That gave Emma some more courage and she pressed on “So then do you anybody that goes to Hogwarts or are you a loner?”

He gave a heavy sigh and turned to face her “You don’t take a hint do you?”

She gave a large smile and shook her head no. It looked as if he might smile back but didn’t. “So a chatterbox is it? Well then what do you got?”

“I knew you’d warm up to me, nobody can resist a friendly face.”

“It could be possible that you’re hard to ignore as you don’t ever shut up” but this time he spoke with a grin. Before she could retort back the compartment door opened and a voice that sounded like nails on a chalkboard filled the room. “Draco! I wondered where you ran off to.” Emma scrunched her nose up at the shrilly voice and turned to look at the new comer. She was a short pug faced girl with shiny black hair pulled back in a braid and she was already wearing her robes sans house tie. Emma almost felt sorry for the girl not only was she unlucky in looks but also in voice. “Hello. My name is Emma Lynn…” but that was a far as she got.

“That’s nice but not necessary” the pug faced girl interrupted as she once again faced Draco effectively ignoring Emma.

“Pansy” Draco warned her. Pansy pouted at him before flopping down on the bench next to him. She shot Emma a territorial look and Emma suddenly understood. Pansy had a crush on Draco and she perceived Emma as competition. Ha! Emma was still in that stage where boys had cooties. They were just another person to talk to. Emma gave Pansy a grin and a wink before turning to Draco and asking him “Is she always this grouchy? Is that why you were hiding from her?” There were two reactions after she asked that question. Draco gave in a not only smiled but chuckled and Pansy snarled.

“Why you little witch. How dare you speak about me that way. Do you know who I am?”

“Uh Pansy?” Emma cheekily asked. A muffled chuckle/cough came from Draco.

“I’m Pansy Parkinson, my family is one of the last few prominent pure-blooded families left next to Draco’s. And what are you?”

“Well last I checked human. Well witch too. But human none the less.” came Emma’s sarcastic reply. If possible Pansy’s face became more scrunched up and red, her hands curling into fists at her side. Draco sensing what was coming placed his hand on her shoulder and squeezed until she calmed down. Finally Pansy spoke to Emma again “Well then Emma tell us what about yourself. I’d love to hear all about you?”

Emma knew what that tone meant. Pansy wasn’t trying to be friendly in any way but trying to dig up some kind of dirt on the girl and then use it to humiliate her with it. But Emma had no intention of spilling her secrets to the pig girl so in her most condescending voice she spoke “ Well lets see I’m eleven, a Capricorn, and the first witch in my immediate family but I’m not sure if that has anything to do with me being a Capricorn” she joked. Draco’s mouth had fallen open into a big ’O’ and Pansy had the biggest smirk on her face. Uh oh. Had she said something bad? She didn’t think so. I mean all first years were eleven, being a Capricorn was just a bunch of astrology crap and being the first witch in her family was quite an accomplishment. Not to mention extremely amazing. So what was it?
Finally Pansy shrieked “You’re parents are muggles?”

Emma remembered reading about what a muggle was and it didn’t seem like a bad thing. I mean there were loads of famous witch and wizards who came from muggle families.

“Yeah. They’re lawyers. But I’m not to keen on the lawyer jokes so we’ll just skip over them.”

A look of pure disgust crossed over Pansy’s face and she immediately stood up and started brushing the front of her robes off as if there was dirt on it. “Eww. I don’t want her mudblood germs all over me.”

At that moment the compartment doors opened at the end of Pansy’s statement and three pairs of eyes turned suddenly to stare at her. “A mudblood!” was the general outburst then. Emma turned shocked eyes over to Draco as if to ask what was going on but he was looking back out the window. A pair of hands grabbed her shoulders and pulled her to her feet. “We don’t want your nasty germs around us. Take your filth and get out!” At this she was turned and shoved out of the trains compartment to crash into the hallway wall. Her trunk was pushed out next and smashed into her knee. The sound of laughter was heard as the door slid closed.

Emma had no idea what had happened but she suddenly felt mad. It was hard for Emma to get mad but what happened in there made her blood boil. Stupid prats. Emma grabbed her trunk and turned to head down the hallway and find another compartment to sit in. Great. Her first journey into the magical world was turning out just perfect. A hand reached out and grabbed her wrist. She turned and saw Draco behind her. “What do you want?” she snarled. He let go of her wrist and said “Why didn’t you say anything before? About being a mudblood?”

“I don’t know what that means? How was I supposed to tell you?”

“Little idiot. It’s the worst insult someone could give a person who was muggle born.”

“Oh well then. You being a pureblood ends our little friendship then huh?” Emma turned and walked away from Draco. As she headed down the hall she ran into a girl with bushy brown hair and a boy who seemed to be looking for something. She couldn’t get passed them so she stopped and listened to her ask some boys in a compartment about a boys toad and someone doing a spell. Emma waited for the girl to start moving on when Emma asked her “Do you know if there are any empty compartments around here?”

Before the bushy haired girl could answer, one of the two boys spoke up “You could fit in here with us, every where else is full.”
