Part II

July 1998
After Kreacher had brought them tea and biscuits, Harry and Draco got comfortable, and settled in to chat. Draco in the forest green leather wing backed chair that he had begun to think of as his, and Harry on the green leather sofa across from it.
Draco started, “So, Harry, you said you don’t think you ever really hated me?”
Staring contemplatively into the fire for a moment, Harry finally answered, “No, I think it was always more of going along with what everyone else said, and expected me to do and be. I didn’t know you, how could I honestly say that I hated you? It’s true we might not have gotten off to the best start when we met at Madam Malkin’s, but how is one brief meeting enough to judge a person’s true self and character, right?
“I mean, we were just kids, and kids have a tendency of wanting to show off for each other. I realized at some point, I can’t really remember when now, that it was mostly just posturing on your part.
“And because it was all so new for me, I didn’t know how to respond to you. I didn’t know what Quidditch was, or that there were different houses. I grew up with Muggle relatives who hated everything magic and that included me.
“Hagrid came and delivered my letter and rescued me from them and took me shopping, but I still didn’t know anything about what to expect. And the stories he and Ron told me didn’t help matters any.”
Smiling sheepishly, Harry ducked his in embarrassment, and said, “Sorry, I’m rambling. I do that when I get nervous. You do understand what I mean though, don’t you?”
Looking at Harry with a small smile on his face, Draco chuckled, and said, “Yes, Harry, I know exactly what you mean. I was raised listening to stories about the Boy Who Lived, and constantly told that I needed to make friends with him. I mean, who wouldn’t want to be friends with me. I am a Malfoy after all; rich, powerful, good looking. I was taught that we got whatever we wanted, no matter how long it took.
“And then when you rejected me, in favor of Weasley, I was just a tad bit put out. I couldn’t figure out why you wouldn’t want to be my friend. So, I went on a mission to make you change your mind. That was the biggest reason behind all the taunts and jibes over the years. I did it to get a reaction out of you. I didn’t expect that reaction to be anger and continued denial of friendship. And for that I am truly sorry. I’d like to start over again if possible.”
With that Draco stopped to drink a cup of tea and eat a biscuit.
Harry just sat there in stunned silence at first. After a few minutes, he gave Draco the most beautiful smile he had ever seen, and leaning forward slightly, and extending his hand, said, “Hi, I’m Harry Potter and it’s very nice to meet you.”
Caught off guard for just a moment, Draco leaned forward to take Harry’s hand, and smiling in return, said, “It’s nice to meet you too, Harry. I’m Draco Malfoy.”
And with that handshake, a friendship began.
