Chapter Two

Draco stood behind a pillar near the entrance to the Great Hall. He was waiting for Harry to come by so he could talk to him quickly. It was better to get all this out of the way now than not have the nerves to do it later. The blonde watched as dozens of students passed by, all chattering to each other about things that couldn’t interest him if he had actually cared.

Finally a mop of black hair could be seen coming down the steps in the main hall and heading towards the Great Hall for dinner. Accompanying the owner of the messy hair known as Harry were his friends Ron and Hermione. The trio made their way to the giant doors of the hall. Breathing deeply, Draco walked as calmly as he could over to his crush and his friends.

“Potter, may I have a word with you?” he inquired, leaving any previous malice he would normally have, behind. His heart was beating so fast it nearly hurt. A hundred different scenarios flew through his mind, all of them not in his favour.

The Weasel jumped into the conversation before Potter could open his mouth. “What do you want with Harry Malfoy? Going to take him off to You-Know-Who? Well he’s not coming with you so beat it,” the redhead spat out.

An elegant, blonde eyebrow rose. “I don’t believe I was talking to you Weasley. All I want to do is talk to Potter. That’s it. Now will you accompany me to somewhere private so I can discuss something with you?” he asked the brunette boy. Say yes, repeated itself in his head like a mantra.

Harry paused for several moments. A calculating gleam shone in his eyes. Obviously he didn’t trust Draco enough to just go with him even if it was just to talk. Finally the teen agreed. He told his two friends to go on ahead without him and that he wouldn’t be too long. Just to make them feel better, he also reassured them that if ‘ferret face’ were to try anything against him, he could just hex the Slytherin into next week.

Draco led Potter down the hall to the first empty classroom he could find. He placed several locking and silencing charms up before turning to face his classmate. A deep flush crept across his cheeks at the thought of what he was about to do. There was no turning back now so no matter what he had to do it. Just the fact that Harry might not share his sentiments made his chest constrict painfully.

“There’s something I need to tell you but I don’t really know how to say it. You have no idea how hard it is for me to do this, for several different reasons but I won’t bother getting into that right now. I just needed to get all this off my chest and I thought a direct approach would be the best course of action. I can’t even begin to imagine what your reaction would be, or anyone else’s for that matter—”

“Malfoy, get to the point already. Breakfast will be over in no time if you keep going on like this,” Harry interrupted the blonde’s nervous rambling. A confused frown made itself known especially as he had been expecting his enemy to taunt him and maybe throw a few hexes or jinxes at him in the process of their ‘discussion’.

Blushing even harder than he thought possible, the senior Slytherin gave a curt nod. “I wanted you to know that I don’t hate you. I never really did. Sure I was jealous of you quite a bit throughout the years but that was as far as it went for dislike. Actually it’s all wrong. I don’t hate you in the least. I…” he took a deep breath, trying to steady his nerves for the news. “I think I’m in love with you Harry.”

Silence permeated the dusty classroom. Neither boy moved nor said a word. Draco kept his eyes glued to the floor, not wanting to meet Harry’s eyes just yet. He was absolutely terrified that he would once again be rejected by someone he cared about. It wasn’t a lie that he was truly in love with Potter as fake as it might sound. He knew that the other boy probably thought this was all a trick. It was far from it though. All he had ever wanted was for someone to love him and care for him. He wanted them to like him for being Draco not Draco Malfoy, heir to the Malfoy family, Ice Prince of Slytherin and forced-to-be servant of Voldemort. He just wanted someone to know who the real Draco was, not the mask he had been portraying all these years.

Glancing up, he noticed that Harry was staring at him with a vacant expression but deep inside his emerald eyes something was happening. The dark-haired teen was processing the situation and trying to make sense of it. Nothing like this had ever happened before and he had not expected anything of the sort to happen in the first place so it was all new to him.

“You probably don’t think it’s true but I can show you if you want,” Draco said quietly. Quickly and trying not to think too much at the moment, he darted forward and placed a chaste kiss to the other’s lips.

That action got Harry into gear. He shoved the smaller teen away who tripped and hit his head on a desk on the way down to the floor. “What are you doing?!” he cried disgusted. Wiping his mouth with his shirt sleeve, he grimaced at the thought of what had just happened.

“I…I w-was showing you it w-wasn’t a lie,” the blonde explained desperately. His eyes began to tear up. He had just received his answer to an unasked question. Refusing to cry, he backed down from the Gryffindor. It hurt to know that he had shared his first kiss with the person he loved only to be pushed away not a second later.

“That’s disgusting! You’re a fag? Don’t come near me you freak! Stay away or else. Gross!” spat Harry as he stormed out of the classroom, slamming the door shut behind him.

Draco brought his knees up to his chest, hiding his face in his hands. Tears were freed and streamed down his cheeks. No sobs could be heard but small sniffles escaped every now and then. He had learned long ago that it was useless to cry aloud when no one listened or cared that he was in pain. Most times it only made matters worse.

Several minutes later, he stood up. Drying his face with his school robes the boy made his way to the door. The class bell had rung just after Harry had left so he was officially late. Draco began walking in the direction of the Slytherin dorms. He knew what he had to do. It was his plan in case Potter had turned him down. It was a good thing he had pretty much prepared everything in advance so he could just do it rather than having second thoughts. Although at this point, the blondie didn’t care about anything. He was numb to everything. It was better this way. It wouldn’t be as painful to do what he had planned.
