The Most Wonderful Time of the Year
The Reason for the Season
Chapter Two: The Most Wonderful Time of the Year.
Draco arrived outside Hermione’s cottage on the outskirts of Hogsmeade at 10 am on Saturday morning. He walked up the frost-covered path, a few resilient flowers still in bloom along the walkway despite the cold, dreary weather.
When he raised his hand to knock below the wreath, he wondered for the hundredth time that morning how he ended up here. He gave two strong knocks and when Hermione opened the door Draco was surprised to see that she wasn’t alone.
“Good morning, Draco, come in.” she greeted him.
“Good morning Hermione and…” he looked at the little girl Hermione had perched on her hip. She had strawberry blond curls, big blue eyes and cubby toddler cheeks making her look like a cherub.
“This is Fauna Weasley, Ron and Luna’s little one. She is my god niece.”
“Good morning Fauna,” Draco said and the little girl giggled, “Goo mornin.” She answered.
Hermione lead Draco through the entrance hall to the kitchen. He hung up his cloak and took a look around. The kitchen looked as if the cupboards had exploded their contents all over the place.
Bowls, spoons, bags of ingredients and cookie cutters were laid out on the main counter, baskets, ribbons and bows were on the kitchen table.
He looked over at Hermione who was placing Fauna in a child’s booster seat and giving her some crayons and paper to keep her busy. She tickled the little girl under the chin and she squealed and laughed, “No auntie Mione.” Hermione smiled and kissed the little girl on the head.
Draco had never really been around children, being an only child and having no close extended family, his experience was limited. Hermione was completely at ease with the toddler, and he had to admit Weasel and Loony had a beautiful child.
“Okay so Fauna was a last minute addition to the cookie making team but I am sure we can still get it all done and keep the little mischief maker occupied.
Fauna looked up and gave her Auntie and the blonde wizard a smile that proved she was a little troublemaker.
Draco laughed as the little girl went back to coloring.
“So we have about 5,000 cookies to make,” Hermione started to explain.
“5,000!” Draco said.
“Give or take a couple dozen, and how many batches come out wrong.”
“So I take it we will not be using magic.”
“Where is the fun in that?” She asked
Draco just shrugged, rolled up his sleeves and grabbed a bag of flour, not quite sure what he was doing, it was just like potions right?

Hours later the dozens upon dozens of cookies lay ready to be packaged up. Draco and Fauna sat at that table both enjoying a cookie batter covered wooden spoon.
Draco had opted for the chocolate chip and Fauna for the sugar cookie.
Hermione turned around from the sink, where she had just finished scrubbing the last of the baking sheets to find one of the funniest sights she had ever seen.
There sat Draco Malfoy, his face covered in cookie dough offering his spoon to her nice who wasn’t fairing any better, most of the sugar cookie dough on her cubby face.
She laughed and they both looked at her.
“Cookie!” Fauna yelled waving her spoon in the air.
“You love cookies don’t you darling.”
“Yesh” the little on said in a very serious tone, Fauna loved anything her auntie baked.
“How about we wash your face and then we can have a story?” she asked as she lifted the little girl from the chair.
“Story time!” she squealed.
“You may want to come with us Draco, unless you like being covered in cookie remains?”
He laughed and stood up. He hadn’t felt this…alive... in a very long time. Nor had he ever felt so comfortable in another’s house. Hermione kept her cottage warm and inviting. It seemed that everyone who entered became instant family.
This world was new to him, but he was liking it very much. He thanked whatever gods could hear for his good fortune.
The bathroom smelled like vanilla when he entered. Fauna was standing on a little stool, Hermione behind her wiping her face with washcloth.
“All clean!” Hermione announced. She lifted her niece once more, kissed her clean cheek and set her down. “Why don’t you go pick out a story book from the toy room?”
“Otay!” and the girl waddled off as fast as her little legs could take her.
“Now your turn.” Hermione snatched up a clean face cloth from the pile and rinsed it under warm water.
“Apparently you never perfect your spoon licking skills as a kid.” She joked as she gently cleaned his face. She couldn’t help but notice what a handsome man he had become.
“Never got to do that as a kid, I wasn’t allowed near the kitchens.”
“Well, now you know the wonders of raw dough. There, cookie free face.”
“Thanks.” He looked down into her whiskey colored eyes, her hair was pulled into a bun, but little tendrils had escaped. She had some flour caught in one of her curls. He reached dup and carefully pulled the curl, freeing the white powder.
“There, you had flour in you hair.” Draco realized they were very close to each other. She had become a very beautiful woman in his eyes. He subconsciously began to lean down toward her.
He was suddenly knocked into her though, as a pair of small arms wrapped around his leg clutching a large book.
“Dis one Auntie ‘Mione”
Draco had wrapped one arm around Hermione to keep her tumbling to the bathroom floor. He looked down at the smiling girl.
“Huggies! Me want one!” She reached up book still in hand. Hermione bent down to scoop up Fauna, who wrapped her arms around her neck.
“Dracoo too.” She looked up with those baby blue eyes and Draco couldn’t help but wrap his arms around the two witches.
He felt his heart clench a little at the feeling. Hermione too, felt a little stab in her heart during the sweet little moment. Then Fauna decided “Story time, Story time.”

After three readings of “The Christmas Fairy” Fauna was fast asleep on the couch, covered in a warm flannel blanket.
Draco and Hermione were in the kitchen having a cup of tea and filling out the cards for the baskets.
“Who is the giant basket for?” Draco asked as he placed another bow in the side of the basket.
“The orphanage. I will be heading there tomorrow to do my usual rounds and then make decorations with the children. I have bags full of stockings and fabric paint in my closet, not to mention enough colored paper and markers to set up an art shop.”
“That sounds fun.”
“Oh it is, and the children really enjoy it. Watching them laugh and smile makes all the work worth while.”
“Could, I mean if it isn’t to much trouble, come along with you.”
“Really?” Hermione asked shocked but thrilled at this new Draco, who was so different than the brat she had gone to school with.
“Yeah, I mean it sounds like you could use the help and I am free.”
“That would be great, how is your singing?”
“Horrible,” he replied honestly.
“Good, so is mine, so you wont show me up when we sing carols.”
“Should a cast a silencing charm?” he asked with a smirk and Hermione threw a bow at him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Draco took his leave just before dinner. Hermione had offered to cook for him, and not give him buttered noodles like Fauna would be eating. He declined, he was to have dinner with his Godfather, he also didn’t want to be around when Weasley came around to bring Fauna home, but he didn’t tell Hermione that.
At the door Fauna walked over to Draco and put her arms in the air.
“Hugs goo bye.”
Draco got down on his knee and gave the toddler a warm embrace.
“Good night Fauna.” He said
“Goo nigh Dracoo.” She retuned. She let go and waddled back to the living room to her toys.
“Good night Draco, thank you for all your help today.”
“I enjoyed it. It has been a long time since I have had so much fun.”
“Glad to hear it, I will see you tomorrow at the Orphanage, around one.”
“I’ll be there, have a good evening.”
He waved as she watched him walk to the apparation point on the other side of the gate and disappeared.
A/N Okay Cookie Backing day complete. Making 5,000 cookies in one day is completely possible, even in a galley kitchen.
I am overwhelmed with the large positive reaction to this tale. Just another one of my plot bunnies turned violent.
