Albus Potter knew that something had changed and dramatically while he was at Hogwarts and judging by his dad’s pallor and general ill-health he was afraid to hear the worst. Was his dad sick? And if so what was it and how serious was it? And where in Merlin’s name was his father when his dad could barely keep standing? The questions tumbled out of him in a rush of fear and confusion but one look at the tensing of Harry’s body and the convulsive movement of his jaw promptly shut him up. They didn’t speak much after that and certainly not on the subjects that bothered them the most, but clutched onto each other as if by some prior agreement, which showed just how strong of a bond they shared – something that Ron always found beyond annoying as he never learnt to tell what his husband or son wanted.

It was only when they were at home that his dad disclosed why his father was not there to meet him or why he was not going to be a part of his life anymore. Albus listened with little interest to this bit of news, because, for one, he wasn’t surprised at the turn of events, seeing and hearing things his parents thought he was too young to see and hear, and, for another, because what interested him the most was why his dad was struggling so much with standing and what looked like keeping in his breakfast. As it turned out it was for the very same reason that they didn’t Floo in or Apparated but rather took an enchanted car that his father must have borrowed from his grandfather, who was now marketing the things quite successfully for the weirdoes like himself. His dad’s new condition that was clearly wearing him thin, scared Albus out of his wits and for some time he could not see beyond one horrifying possibility.

The worry and fear only intensified when he entered Harry’s room later that day to witness him closing the bathroom door doubled over and then lying on the bed all sweaty, with his eyes closed and his breathing heavy. When Harry saw Al standing in the doorway with scared eyes twice their normal size staring at him in shock he beckoned him over with a bone-tired motion of his hand and a wan smile. Once Al was tucked in at his side with his arms wrapped tightly around his dad as if in a testimony that he was not letting him go anytime soon, Harry explained that he was not as young as he was the first time around to go through with something like this and that is why it was proceeding with some minor hitches but that there was no need to worry or picture the worst. To distract Al from his gloomy thoughts, Harry asked him about Hogwarts and soon the subject strayed to Scorpius Malfoy and their daring adventures. Harry, who knew some of them from his son’s letters, could not help laughing as Al relived them all over again with boundless enthusiasm, but at times was called forth by his parental duty to admonish his son for breaking school rules and losing unnecessary House points. However without much conviction behind his words, which led Al to believe that his dad didn’t really mean it.

The evening was peaceful and relaxed, followed by a scrumptious meal from Kreacher, who decided not to be outdone by Hogwarts house-elves. Harry was sure that by the time they moved on to dessert and he recounted with rekindled joy one of the many adventures that he got up to while at Hogwarts Al’s fears were appeased. Al loved those stories and Harry was glad to have something up his sleeve for when in need of major cheering-up. But despite his best efforts Al’s worry remained niggling at the back of his mind and the next morning he owled Scorpius to tell him that he was not coming for Christmas.
The reaction that his letter produced in the Malfoy household he could not have predicted and soon Draco and Scorpius Malfoy were breaking down the door to Grimmauld Place in towering rage and with identical scowls on their pale pointed faces. Harry who was kept strictly in the dark as to his son’s intentions of not leaving his side as long as he could was very surprised to find himself facing the Malfoy duo in such a state. For a split second he was afraid that they came to retract their invitation and he couldn’t imagine what a blow to Albus it would be, but soon the whole affair exploded in his face and he had to take a seat because an absolute rage on Malfoy’s Sr. face was making him unsteady.

Unlike his father, Scorpius was standing a few steps away as if trying to disappear within the nearby cabinet and looking at him, small and sad, Harry realised that the anger was not his. It was Draco Malfoy’s rejection thing all over again, as he no doubt decided that a Potter had once again snubbed a Malfoy; but Harry didn’t care for another Potter-Malfoy rivalry born out of Malfoy’s stung pride and meant to straighten the issue at once. He looked at Albus with his best ‘I’m disappointed in you’ look and Albus had the grace to look truly contrite for causing trouble for his dad.

‘Al, I have no idea what possessed you to send Scorpius this letter.’ said Harry softly. ‘I thought I was very explicit when I gave you permission to join Scorpius and his family for Christmas. But if you felt any qualms about the whole thing you should have come to me first – together we would have handled it without creating all the commotion.’

Scorpius’s attention was once again caught by Harry’s soft and calm manner and he stood still, rapt with fascination. It certainly made for a capital change after all the harping his father had done on the subject of Potters, their half-blood heritage and ungrateful nature. Al’s cheeks flushed with embarrassment as he shuffled from foot to foot. He slowly raised his eyes to meet his dad’s and biting his lip, burst out –
‘I knew you would insist on my going! And I want to go too!’ he added to Scorpius, ‘But you’re not well and I couldn’t leave you like that to spend Christmas with no one but Kreacher for company!’

Malfoy Sr. looked curiously at Harry, making him blush too, but Harry soon spoke again, shaking his head and feeling uncomfortable under the double scrutiny of father and son:
‘Al, did you think that depriving you of the chance to enjoy yourself at the party you’ve obviously been looking forward to for a while would make me feel better?’ he asked quietly, hugging his distraught son close to him.

Scorpius involuntarily glanced at his father, who hadn’t changed his rigid posture ever since he ran out of nasty things to say, and wondered what it would take to make him show at least half of the tenderness that Mr. Potter was bestowing upon his son in cauldronfuls.

Al looked duly chastised and not a little pained for bringing up the whole ‘alone thing’ that produced the look of such intense interest on Mr. Malfoy’s face. He knew their past history was unpleasant and he was sure that his dad wouldn’t want to share the particulars of his private life with him, despite the fact that their sons shared most of everything. But he was saved from further remorse eating deep into his soul by his dad, who suggested that he showed Scorpius around. Al hastened to comply and dragged Scorpius, who was oddly mesmerized by the smile Mr. Potter supplied his suggestion with, away.

Summoning Kreacher to bring them tea and to lay the table for four in about half an hour (deeming it enough for Al and Scorpius to play catch-up) Harry inadvertently invited Malfoy to dig claws into the shreds of his life. And because he had virtually no one to talk to, what’s with Ron monopolizing all of their friends and acquaintances while Harry was staying home with the baby, he told Malfoy everything about his unexpected divorce, difficult pregnancy and shaky financial situation due to his ex-husband’s extravagant ways. When Malfoy was done extracting every painful bit, he offered his help in the most earnest and genial manner and Harry was so taken aback by this new development that he found himself agreeing with him before he fully thought through what exactly he was agreeing to.
