Red Ragtop

He was seated for his N.E.W.T.S. and his palms were sweaty. Transfiguration had not been his forte, despite all the extra tutoring he’d been receiving from Minerva. But that wasn’t what was on his mind. Rather than the proper method and licensing for animagus transformations, all he could think about was that night from a few weeks ago.

It had happened just after she’d dismissed him for the evening, an extra session of tutoring on a Friday that had run til half past five. His black eyes gazed at her, for an older woman, he found her to be very attractive. “You may go, Severus.” Minerva said.

“Thank you, Professor,” he said, though he did not step away from where they had been standing.

“Is there something further I can help you with?” she asked when she noticed he did not leave.

Severus, pale faced and just barely 17, flushed. He tried to hide it his embarrassment, but failed to do so. He opened his mouth to speak, but squeaked air rather than words and he frowned, cursing himself for his inability to articulate his respect toward her. Though it was more than just respect; in the last year, Severus had grown quite fond of his professor.

“Mr. Snape?” she asked him, stepping around from behind the table and resting a hand on the boy’s shoulder. “Is something the matter?”

It was his undoing. Without a second thought, Severus pulled her face to his and he kissed the teacher. She whimpered, a muffled sound of protest but he did not relent, and a moment later he felt her tongue caressing his own. He moaned in sheer bliss, arching his lanky body against hers, longing to feel the body that was well hidden beneath her teaching robes.

He wasn’t sure how they’d ended up in the back of an old muggle ’66 Corvet, with the ragtop down, underneath the starry sky. She was nestled in his arms, he’d made love for the first time, to a woman a good thirty years his senior, in the back of a muggle convertible out in a field somewhere. And it was all he could think of, eyeing the exam.

It was torture, but the hours passed and eventually she called out, “Quills down, the exam is over.” He was uncertain, but Severus breathed a sigh of relief. At least it was over. As he stood, gathering his things, he risked a glance in her direction, catching her eye for the briefest of moments. “Mr. Snape, please see me before you go,” she said, her voice cold.

His stomach turned, was she going to reprimand him? Was it that obvious that he had been thinking about their encounter during the exam? He waited until the others filed out of the testing room and then approached her. “Yes, Professor?”

She frowned. “In my office, if you please,” she said and led him into the office that adjoined with the classroom, locking the door behind her.

“Am I in trouble?” he asked.

“No, Severus. You are not.” She said. She slowly took her glasses off and placed them on her desk, turning to face him. “I shouldn’t tell you this, but a part of me is compelled to be honest with you, knowing your maturity will surpass your feelings…” her voice trailed off and she closed her eyes. But a moment passed and Minerva found her courage, facing the boy once more. “That incident from weeks ago…it was foolish of me to act on such a wild impulse. You must understand, Severus, that an incident as such cannot be repeated.”

“But—”

“I’m sorry. It’s caused enough problems as it is,” she said firmly.

“Problems?”

Minerva stared straight at the boy. “I was foolish, and was not careful. Aside from the fact that I allowed things to progress as they did in the first place, I was the older person and should have been more responsible.” A knot built in her throat. “I will not let further mistakes progress from that situation.”

His eyes went wide. “We— I— but I could—”

“No, you could not. You’re a boy, and I’m far too old for that sort of responsibility now. My time has passed.”

“Don’t I get a say in this?” he growled, eyes narrowing at her.

“Be so fortunate that I’m telling you at all.” She paused a moment. “It’s already been taken care of.”

“Then why tell me at all?” Severus sneered, his pride wounded, his heart breaking. He didn’t think he loved her, but to have that information thrust on him at once and retracted before he could even begin to think on it was hardly fair.

“Because you need to be aware that such actions have consequences, Mr. Snape,” she said, adapting a more formal tone. “And I apologize for leading you astray and allowing you to think that sort of behavior was acceptable.” Minerva crossed her arms over her chest. “Now, I think it best if you return to your common room, I’m certain you have other exams to prepare for.”

Severus stood silent, brooding. He knew not what to say. He let his hair fall forward, obscuring his face as he kicked the chair nearest her desk and stormed from his professor’s office.
