Chapter 1 - Explanations

Albus Dumbledore sat at his desk, waiting patiently for his two guests, Minerva McGonagall was nervously pacing by the window.

“Minerva, please stop pacing. It’s making me feel dizzy,” he said with a sad smile at the woman who had shared his life for the past fifty years. She was the only one who knew how hard this was for him, how he still hated himself for his actions all those years ago.

“I’m sorry, Albus; it’s just that I can’t believe that this is really happening, after all these years,” she said whilst walking towards him; after reaching him she knelt by his knees and laid her head on his lap.

Albus sighed and started to absently stroke his beloved’s hair whilst listening to her quiet breathing.

There was a loud pop, Minerva leapt up quickly and moved back to the window.

Dobby the house elf stood in front of the desk with a serious look on his face.

“Headmaster, you were asking Dobby to tell you when your visitors were arriving.”

“Thank you, Dobby. Please make sure that everything else has been done.”

“It will be done for you, Headmaster.” Dobby smiled and then, with a loud pop,
left the room.

Albus looked at Minerva with a sad smile. “Well, my dear, it is nearly time. Will you stand by my side?”

“Always, my love.” With that, she moved over to stand behind his chair, laying a reassuring hand on his shoulder.

They didn’t have to wait long as there was a knock on the door, and before Albus had the time to speak the door opened and Remus Lupin and Harry Potter walked into the room. Albus noticed that Remus looked thinner and older than he had ever seen him. Harry looked angry and upset. The Headmaster sighed. This was going to be hard for them all. If only they could all keep their emotions under control!

Albus stood up. “Remus, Harry. Thank you for coming so quickly. I know that we have much to talk about and that you have lots of questions. I hope I can give you all the answers that you require.” He gestured to the two chairs that were placed in front of the desk. “Please sit and then I will answer everything I can.”

Remus gratefully sank into the chair he was offered. He was feeling so tired ever since he had received the letter, and the full moon was fast approaching. Only six days remained until he would have to endure his monthly ritual.

Harry stood behind his adopted godfather’s chair and rested his hands on the back, much as Professor McGonagall was now doing opposite him. “Shall we get to it, then? I know that Remus has questions and so do I!”

“Let me tell you first about what happened and then afterward I will answer anything else.” Albus looked at both men, waiting for their agreement.

Harry looked at Remus and saw a slight nod. “Okay, Professor. You can tell us first, and then we will ask questions.”

Albus took a breath.

“OK, I shall begin. Eighteen years ago I was asked by two of my favourite students to do a bonding between them I agreed as I had seen the love between them.

“That was a very happy day and I couldn’t have been prouder of the two young men than I was.” Albus smiled fondly. “Both you and Sirius looked so happy and proud, Remus. It was only a few months later that you found out that you were pregnant, and both of you were over the moon with joy.

“I remember that the two of you came and asked Minerva and I to be god parents - we agreed, of course. Just a few months later, Lily and James found out that she was expecting Harry.

“A werewolf pregnancy lasts only 6 months, so it was in March on the fifth that you gave birth to a beautiful little girl. She had black hair and hazel brown eyes, and you named her Ellorra Minerva Lily Lupin-Black.

“You were such a happy and devoted family. When Lily had Harry, the plans that James and Sirius had…well, some were funny and some were just plain ridiculous!

“When Lily and James had to go into hiding, you were beside yourself, but you knew that it was for the best. The safety of your friends and family always came first. When we found out that they had died, and Sirius had been arrested, you had a breakdown, Remus.

“You were not allowed to see your husband and Sirius was worried about the state of your mind, and how you would cope with Ellorra.

“I went to see him and asked him for the truth, but he wouldn’t answer; he only said that Moony knew the truth. He asked me to look after you as he knew that you weren’t handling it very well.

“He also made me take a wizard’s oath that if I thought or knew that you couldn’t look after your daughter, then I was to take her to a family that he knew and to change your memories. It broke my heart, but I agreed.

“Sirius knew you better than himself; he knew that you would blame yourself for the Potters’ death just as he blamed himself.

“I watched you for a few weeks and I saw that you were slowly killing yourself. You ate when you had to, but your eyes were dead, even when you looked at your daughter. She had been your life but now you merely went through the motions of living.

“So I came to the most difficult decision that I had to make. I took Ellorra from you and altered your memories so you wouldn’t remember her or your bonding - just your love for Sirius and the time you had together.” He looked at Remus with unshed tears in his eyes.

“I took her to a family who took her in and loved her like she was their own daughter. She grew up with an older sister and parents who doted on her, but she never forgot her ‘fathers’.

“Yes, she knew she was not their daughter, but the daughter of two very special wizards. She has always known. We couldn’t keep that from her, not when she started to ask questions when she was little.

“We didn’t think that she should come here to go to school, so she received a letter from both Beauxbatons and Durmstrang. She picked Durmstrang. I have been told by High Master Karkaroff that she is one of their best and brightest students.

“When Sirius escaped Azkaban, he went straight to you, Harry, but later that summer he met Ellorra for the first time in twelve years. Sirius was so sure that you would have nothing more to do with him, that you wouldn’t be able to get past what he thought of as his betrayal, that he decided not to tell you yet, Remus. He never wanted for you not to know your daughter, but he knew that he couldn’t change the past.”

Albus looked at the two men in front of him and sighed. “That is the tale so far. I know you have questions, so please go ahead and ask. I will answer what I can.”
