Chapter 2
Blinding Discoveries
Chapter Two
When Harry walked out of his room the next morning he felt extremely disoriented. His body was trying to tell him to open his eyes, but he kept arguing back at it telling it that his eyes were open. By the time he got to the great hall he was drained from the internal battle. After about five minutes of slowly chewing on his food Harry remembered that school had started yesterday…which meant that the entire school was in the great hall with him … which made him wonder why the hell … was no one talking.
He tensed up and looked around, cursing faintly when he realized he didn’t even have the gray outlines to help him, which was probably why he was feeling so disoriented. “What the hell is wrong with everyone?” Harry asked loudly and a loud murmur swept through the great hall. Harry stood up to leave but was stopped when someone’s arm landed on his. “It’s just…so surprising Harry…you don’t look … any different…well you’ve grown and stuff…but I mean…I would’ve never have guessed that you were blind.” Harry shot Hermione a scowl. “Yea…well if Draco Bloody Malfoy could keep his mouth shut…” The roar of outrage from the Slytherin table interrupted Harry. “10 points from Gryffindor Mr. Potter.”
Harry mentally winced at Severus’ voice; it had been quite a while since he had heard that kind of anger in it. He immediately smoothed his new mask into place. Not wanting anyone to see the confusion and hurt at the Potion Master’s words. “Sorry sir.” Harry spat before walking quickly and angrily out of the great hall. He pushed his way out of the entrance doors and walked across the grounds until he got to where he could only guess the lake was. He sat down slowly at the embankment and hugged his knees to his chest. He couldn’t handle the pity, and he certainly couldn’t handle Severus going back to *that* voice with him.
He knew that he would have to apologize to Draco later; he was in a way touched at the concern the other boy had shown. He let his head drop down onto his knees and let his thoughts drift away, not wanting to think about how he would probably never be able to see again. Soft footsteps behind him made his thoughts quickly snap back into place and he tensed until someone sat down next to him. “I’m sorry Harry.” He slowly relaxed when he heard the voice of Severus. “You had ever right to take points away Professor, I am just being a selfish child.” He heard Severus laugh silently, “You take all the fun away from insulting you Harry.”
Harry smiled slightly and he heard Severus sigh, “I was going to wait until later to do this…and to tell you this Harry, but now is probably the best time, I don’t want you…giving up.” Harry waited patiently for Severus to finish whatever he was going to say. “I have…. a spell that … might or might not bring your vision back. I have been given permission from the headmaster to use it…whenever I see fit.”
Harry felt his heart leap in anticipation. “Tell me about it Sir.” Harry said softly, knowing that it would be foolish to just jump into something. “The spell would inform your magic of your disability, which I’m sure it is already aware of, but it would make your magic…deem it necessary to be fixed. Your magic would then start to fix the problem of your eyesight…but in the process it could cause extreme pain.” Harry shrugged, he was use to pain. “I would like to do it sir.” He said and heard some movement beside him.
“There is a possibility that it won’t work Harry, a possibility that your magic might decide that having your vision isn’t necessary…so don’t get your hopes up.” Harry sat there waiting for what seemed like forever until Severus cleared his throat, “Visum Alica.” Harry felt the spell seep into his forehead and winced when a rush of fire spread through his body. But then it was gone and Harry still couldn’t see. He heard Severus sigh in disappointment. “It says that sometimes it takes up to 48 hours to work, but it also says that 98% of the time if it doesn’t work immediately it won’t work at all…I will start to research more ways…but for now…you need to go to class Harry.” Harry nodded and stood up, walking away hiding his disappointment behind his mask.

Harry walked into his first class, which was Transfiguration and smiled at all of the people that had to be looking at him. “15 points for being late Mr. Potter.” McGonagall’s voice rang out in the quiet classroom and Harry sat down in the seat he had been ’assigned’ to, which was by Ron. “Where did you go off to mate? You had me and ‘mione bloody worried.” Harry smiled at Ron, “I just had to get away for a couple of minutes Ron, everyone is blowing this whole thing out of proportion, a cure is being worked on, I won’t be like this forever.” Harry spoke with a confidence that he wished was really there.
This seemed to satisfy Ron though because he turned his full attention back to the subject at hand, which was something to do with turning a muggle pen into a wizard quill. Harry let his mind drift away again as McGonagall explained how to do the spell, a sudden flash of pain snapped Harry’s mind back to reality and he quickly checked to make sure that his scar was ok, when he realized that the pain was coming from somewhere else he frowned. He couldn’t exactly pinpoint where it was coming from, al he could say about it was that it was getting stronger every second.
Harry gritted his teeth as another pulse of pain rain through him and he realized that it was being directed toward his eyes. It felt like something was trying to push his eyes out. He cursed Severus silently and wondered if his magic was going to push his eyes out in order to ‘fix’ the problem. The next flash of pain hurt enough to make Harry drop his quill and that got the attention of Ron. Harry must’ve looked extremely bad because Ron yelped in surprise. He heard the rush of someone running over to him as another wave of pain crashed into him and he made a little noise. “Mr. Potter, what in god’s name is wrong?!” He wanted to answer, but couldn’t bring himself to as wave after wave of intense pain started to course through him. He started to think that maybe someone had cast Crucio on him somehow, his vision flared up and Harry was surprised that he could actually see everyone…but everything was blood red. “Get Madam Pomfrey!” He heard the desperation in McGonagall’s voice and couldn’t help but cry out as the pain worsened. He saw the worried look on all of his classmates that had gathered behind McGonagall to make sure he was all right.
His vision flared up again and everything lost color again before becoming blinding bright. Harry would’ve cheered for his glimpse into the world if it hadn‘t hurt so bad, he faintly noticed that Hermione’s hair was at least 3 inches shorter and that Ron had grown at least 1 foot. Then he proceeded to black out.

When Harry woke back up he was highly disappointed that everything was pitch black again. But on the up side there was no more horrible pain. He sat up and winced when his nerves screamed at him for moving. “Mr. Potter, it’s good to see that you are up.” Harry’s head shot in the direction of Severus’ voice and he smiled. “I think my magic tried to fix it Professor…but…I guess it didn’t work.” Harry frowned when he heard Severus chuckle and then blushed, what was so funny about him being blind still?
“Silly boy, you aren’t blind anymore, there is a gauze over your eyes, if you were to open them when you first woke up your eyes would’ve hurt. When Madam Pomfrey comes back she will take it off, slowly, so your eyes can adjust to the light again.” Harry heard someone move across from him and his eyebrows drew together. “Who else is here?” He heard a few stifled laughs and rolled his eyes, only to find out that no one would be able to see it. “Mr. Malfoy, Mr. Weasley, and Ms. Granger.” Harry glared at Severus, “You could’ve told me that when I woke up…and why is Malfoy here?”
“I didn’t tell you because you didn’t ask, and Draco was concerned for you, as he has been since he heard about your disability.” Harry sighed and slumped his shoulders. “I’m going to go back to sleep, I’m tired….” He felt a reassuring hand on his shoulder and felt a little uneasy because he didn’t know whose hand it was. “I will be here when you wake up Harry.” Harry was surprised when he heard Draco’s voice almost right next to him and couldn’t help but lean toward the heat. His head collided softly when Draco’s shoulder and he closed his eyes and let himself fall back into a peaceful sleep.

Draco didn’t know what to do with a sleeping Potter on his shoulder and looked at Severus, who only looked amused. He then looked at Ron and Hermione and growled softly when he saw amusement in their eyes as well. “What do I do?” Draco asked softly and Severus snorted, “I suggest you don’t move, you wouldn’t want to disturb Harry would you? He’s been though enough as it is.” Malfoy rolled his eyes, “It would figure that you guys would think it was funny.” Ron laughed softly in response and Draco let his body relax, hoping that he wouldn’t have to sit here like this for long. Even though he thought that the weight of Harry’s head was very pleasant on his shoulder.

Harry woke up to someone gently prodding him. He groaned when he felt the stiffness in his neck and sat up slightly and winced when he felt the pain in his back, “Don’t wince and moan Potter, just think of how my shoulder feels.” Harry let his head hit the headboard when he heard Draco’s annoyed voice and smiled apologetically in his direction. “You could’ve moved me.” Harry mumbled and Draco scoffed, “And what? Have Professor Snape and your body guards maim me for disturbing their precious golden boy?” Harry rolled his eyes and then heard a polite cough.
“If you are quite done Mr. Potter, I will start to remove your bandages. It will take around 1 through 2 hours. Every layer of bandage I remove will allow some light to come into contact with your eyes. There are about 13 layers on your eyes, if I give a 10 minute waiting period between each one, it should take approximately 2 hours or 120 minutes.” Harry nodded and so the process began.
When there was only 3 layers left Harry’s eyes were hurting slightly from the light that was seeping through, and he was thankful that Madam Pomfrey had been so precise with her calculations. Finally, they were on the last layer and Harry could almost see through it, then Madam Pomfrey stopped and cleared her throat. “I am going to tell you something now, and you might find it as a bonus, you might now. But when your magic fixed your vision, it literally fixed your vision, you have 20/20 vision now, you will no longer need your glasses.” Harry didn’t know whether or not to feel happy about that, he had thought for the longest time that his glasses were the only thing he had in common with his father, and now he no longer needed them. Then just like that, the last layer fell off and Harry was looking into the face of a very anxious Severus Snape.
